Witchcraft: Simple Home Spells Anyone Can Do

Author:

Born in deepest Cornwall, now living in wild Wales, Bev has been practising her personal brand of eclectic witchcraft for years and years.

Magick in Times of Isolation

I imagine, although there are no stats or figures to back up my theory, that witchcraft is a growing area of interest at this point in time. During these weird periods of reduced freedom, how better to express ourselves than through magick?

We can’t go mix in groups and covens. No communal dancing around the fire or chanting in someone’s living room. We are all solitaries now (you can probably deduce that a ‘solitary witch’ is one who works alone). What we are is ‘hearth witches’. That is a witch who mostly restricts her magickal work to indoors. Most of us haven’t got actual hearths where we can stand a cauldron, but that’s okay. Just being at home makes us hearth witches. Cozy, right?

So, how can we use witchcraft and magick to make life a little more bearable? Work some spells, of course. Here are some simple, easy, and quite fun little spells and processes that might help you take a break from Zoom, sourdough baking, or Netflix.

Tools Required for Working Spells

You don’t need much. In fact, you can get away with practically no tools at all. If you have some unused candles—tealights are fine—they’ll be useful. I like to have pen and paper to hand as most spells need a little working out beforehand. I’ll mention any optional extras at the beginning of each spell.

The most important thing is some time when you won’t be disturbed, although, if you are interrupted, just stop what you are doing and start again when you are able; this is not high magick where rituals have to be just so.

Basic Spell Structure

I use this basic structure for most of my spells. You can add to it, embellish it, make it more meaningful to you in whatever way you choose. I encourage you to write your own incantation or at least, improve on mine. You might like to light more candles before you begin, play music, burn incense, or whatever you like.

As none of these spells are dodgy or dangerous, there is no need to cast a circle beforehand, but doing so can make you feel more magickal. Casting a circle also creates a lovely atmosphere of peace and enchantment. Here's where you can learn how to cast a circle

Think about your goal. Do a quick risk assessment. If it will affect anyone negatively, don’t do it.

Preparation: Clean your working space. For me, that is a quick tidy and vacuum of my living room. I generally use my coffee table as a working altar. Sometimes I will place objects to represent the elements: a chalice of water, a pretty rock, an incense stick and a spare candle/tea light.

Write down the spell chant and either memorize it or have it with you.

Working the Spell

  1. If you are casting a circle, do it now.
  2. Sit quietly and allow yourself to drift into a low-level meditative state. Relax. Feel the peace all around.
  3. Bring your focus into the moment. Whisper or speak the spell chant.
  4. Light the candle and repeat the words three times all together.
  5. Visualize the spell leaving you and dissolving into the air around. Know (really know it) your desire will be taken care of and all you have to do is let go.
  6. It’s done.
  7. Close the circle.
  8. Place the candle somewhere safe to burn out. If you like, you can place the written spell underneath the candle holder.
  9. Have a glass of wine or a cup of your favorite tea. If there’s chocolate, all the better.

Couldn't be easier, right? Let's move on to some specific spells.

Spell for Creating Family Harmony

However happy your family environment is, there will be friction. Might be the kids driving you crazy, balking at homework/study. Maybe both you and your partner have to work from home. Wouldn’t it be nice if you all got along? Or, failing total harmony, at least to have disputes blow over quickly? This spell is designed to align your individual energies and smooth over disagreements.

You may find that individual family members simply go to their own space until they feel better. Or you might find the urge to apologize when normally you would slam a door. Or your partner empties the dishwasher without being nagged. Whatever. It all helps to make life a bit more peaceful.

Optional extras: light blue or pink candle. Family photos.

Follow the instructions as given in the spell structure above. Place your photos, if using, where you can see them. As you say the chant, look at them with an open heart full of love. Light your candles and repeat three times:

This family together we are bound
In peace, and joy we are found
Harmony flows throughout our home
And as I speak, discord flees
Let’s have love all around.

End by feeling or inducing a swelling up of love within your whole body. Breathe it out. Then follow the final steps outlined from #7.

Spell for a Little Excitement

Let’s face it, being at home most of the time can be dull. What you need is some positive excitement. Now that means what it means to you; I have no idea. It could be a phone call, or the opportunity to go somewhere (legal, of course. Perhaps a little adventure? Right now in the UK, we are just beginning to open up). It might be a new thing, or a new romance (or new romance with your existing partner). You can specify what it is and just go for it. Here’s the basic spell; you make it your own.

Optional extras:

A red candle is perfect, but if you haven’t got one, don’t fret. A pinch of cinnamon, paprika, or chilli powder (for excitement). If you have a definite idea what you want, have a printed photo or two in front of you. Otherwise leave it to the fairies of the universe to know what would thrill you.

Follow the structure as described above. Before speaking, sprinkle a pinch of spice, if using, on your working surface. Place the candle on it (you’ll clean up afterward).

Say three times, lighting the candle as you do so.

I love my life, I love my home
But now I need a little change
I’d like some laughs, a bit of fun
The chance to play, and feel quite free
And as I speak, so must it be.

Again follow the instructions given above. In the following days be alert for the opportunities headed your way.

Spell for Weight Stabilization

We’re all eating too much, and not getting as much exercise as we’d like, or should. What you need is to prevent any more weight going on. This spell will help, but you must also meet it halfway. I did this spell and the following day just happened on a Kindle book which inspired me to try some healthier recipes. I didn’t lose any weight but haven’t put any on either. Sometimes, being pointed or guided toward inspiration is all you need.

I desire good health and a slender form
Balanced eating must be the norm
My mind is full of resolution
Please guide me to the right solution
And, as I desire, so it must come.

Once the spell is done, keep your eyes open for something new related to maintaining or losing weight. Nothing faddish, mind, it must be simple and easy to follow.

Spell for Excelling at Work

Concentration is an issue when you are working from home. I work for myself and am finding it so hard to get motivated to write. It’s difficult to impress your boss and colleagues via Zoom and email. This spell will enable to to shine just that little bit brighter and make your supervisor/manager appreciate your efforts.

I’m good at my job; I have motivation
Let me sparkle, impress, and gain your attention
I love my work, I complete my tasks
And I always do more than asked
Boss, it’s time to show appreciation
As I speak, on its way, commendation.

Play With Spells

As long as your spells are harmless and don’t affect anyone else negatively, you can have a lot of fun devising your own. Use the spell structure as given and tweak it to your satisfaction. If you have a beautiful collection of crystals or a tarot deck, you can use them to add a layer of extra energy and meaning.

Good luck!

Thank you for this article, Bev. I've saved it. Can I request an article from you about homemade talisman or amulet that can bring every day that can be a protection from the curse, bad lucks, and harmful attacks from invisible entities? Thank you. :)

Bev G (author) from Wales, UK on April 09, 2021:

Of course, Chrish. I just use them as a point of focus. You could use a flower, a pebble, or a small statuette. x

Wonderful day Ms Bev, I love all the message of the chants.... Maybe I'll do it with my sister's, could it be okay without candles? We're kind of afraid of many candles.

Sorry typo: chanting word.

Thank you again. Om Om also is chinting.

It is wonderful to know you use spells for good side of life.

Bev G (author) from Wales, UK on April 09, 2021:

Hi Gyanendra,

Thank you for your comment. And I love the word 'enchanting':)

The difference is that benign witchcraft, which is the kind that I practice, is done for good, not for harm. It's simply tapping into the energy field in a positive way to make change occur. It's accessible to everyone.

Some humans will use anything they can to cause harm, whether it's magic, gossip, or by using weapons - mainly because of their own insecurity, jealousy, and anger. It was always so, and, sadly, always will be.

Bev, I still get a feeling of restlessness as I read your article about spells.

In my part of the world, I have witness many withcraft and witch doctors who still cast spells.

Last Saturday, I visited a family. There I saw a witch doctor casting spells to heal the sick who had been cast spells in a drink who became sick and became thinner and thinner day by day.

Its an unsolved mystery how humans use spells either to detroy some one or heal.

Thank you for your enchanting article.

Haha-- if that's the case then yes, I do pray and make wishes. Thanks for your kind response

Blessings and love

Bev G (author) from Wales, UK on April 08, 2021:

I bet you have cast spells, Misbah... anytime you make a wish or say a prayer you are tapping into those energies :)

Thank you for your comment and kind words xx

It was fun and interesting read, Bev. The spells you mentioned were to bring peace and harmony ( no negative energies) so I like them. I have never tried any spell in my life. I enjoyed the read

Blessings to you
