A Wiccan New Year’s Spell

Hey, let’s face it—times are tough right now! I think all of us can agree that when it comes to the area of finances these days, it couldn’t hurt to use a little bit of magic. Or, as many prefer in Wicca, ‘magick’.

While a prosperity spell isn’t going to deliver the winning lottery numbers to your door, it certainly can give a little boost to your efforts to increase your income and protect your assets this year.

This little spell is a basic charm. It’s simple enough for the beginner, as there is no ritual circle required, no calling of deities or elements, and no specialized Wiccan tools. So even if you’re new to magical practices, don’t be afraid to give it a go.

I’ll walk you through it here and recommend that you read through it once so you know what to expect. I’m trying to be thorough in explaining everything, so it’s a bit lengthy, but it’s really basic (yet potent!). So don’t shy away from trying this spell just because of the length it takes me to explain it.

This spell harnesses the vibrant energy shared across the globe on New Years.

When to Perform This Spell

I originally designed this spell years ago to take advantage of the energy of the New Year’s Eve countdown celebration—the energy of which will override any magical timing that might not be conducive to the working.

Remember that spells work by directing energy toward a goal. On New Year’s Eve, when everyone is shouting “Happy New Year!” there is a tremendous release of energy—not just in your own home or neighborhood, but in the entire time zone. Basically, all that energy is going to be generated and released, with most of it just returning to the Earth by morning. Don’t let it go to waste; take advantage of it!

Don’t worry, it won’t interfere with your New Year’s Eve celebrations. As long as you do the preparation for the spell in advance, you can actually do the casting right in the middle of a crowded New Year’s celebration. Even if you’re standing in the middle of Times Square, no one will be any the wiser.

If performing the spell on New Year’s Eve is not possible for you, that’s okay. You can still do the spell at a time that harnesses optimal energies and is also more conducive to your working. The powers of the waxing moon are really essential here. The best timing is when the moon is in Capricorn (for money from work and effort), Sagittarius (for luck gambling), or Taurus (for money matters in general). If it falls on a Tuesday or a Sunday, all the better.

If you know how to calculate planetary hours, it's best done in the first, fourth, eighth, or eleventh planetary hour.

What You Will Need

  • 5x5 inch patch of green or brown fabric, preferably silk, satin or some other “rich” fabric.
  • Gold or green ribbon
  • 1 tablespoon of ground cinnamon in a small bowl
  • 4 sesame seeds (you can buy a container of whole sesame seeds in the supermarket spice section)
  • 1 gold coin (see below for more information if you don't have a gold coin)
Any gold coin can be used for this spell—even if you have to paint it yourself!

Any gold coin can be used for this spell—even if you have to paint it yourself!

About That Gold Coin

For this spell, it is useful if you can find one that has your birth year on it. Now, don’t panic. I know gold coins are hard to come by these days—finding one can be hard enough, and finding one with a certain year can be impossible. It’s okay! It doesn’t have to be solid gold.

You can use any coin—a penny, nickel, dime, or quarter will all work. You just have to make whatever coin you choose gold by covering it with gold leafing or painting it gold. Make sure the leafing or the paint you use contains actual gold, and use it to cover the coin (one side at a time). If worst comes to worst, you can melt some gold crayon wax onto it.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Creating the Charm

Once you have all of your tools, you are ready to begin!

Step 1: Prepare Your Coin

The very first thing you should do if you don't have a gold coin is take the necessary steps to make it gold. If you are painting it, let the paint dry.

Step 2: Find a Place With Light to Gather Your Materials

Go outdoors in daylight hours with all of your items and find somewhere you can lay them down on the ground. You can also lay them on a picnic table or somewhere outdoors if possible. Just make sure you are somewhere you’re shielded from the wind—otherwise, your components may blow away.

If outdoors isn’t possible, do it by a window when the sun is streaming through. If doing it in daylight isn’t possible at all, light a white candle and do it by candlelight.

Step 3: Begin to Channel Earth Energy

Spread out the square of fabric on the surface before you. In your mind, compare it to a patch of Earth—either green and grassy (if the fabric is green) or as rich, tilled soil (if it is brown). Reflect on it as being like the fertile Earth, from which all things spring. The Earth gives us all material goods.

Step 4: Integrate the Cinnamon

Pick up the cinnamon in the bowl. Without getting too close to it (you don’t want to accidentally breathe it in, as cinnamon dust is an irritant), inhale the rich, earthy scent. Cinnamon is a spice of the Sun and the sacred element Fire—like the Earth is fertile ground for material goods, cinnamon is fertile ground for planting seeds of ambition and desires.

Meditate on this connection for a few minutes. Empty the cinnamon onto the fabric in a small pile.

Step 5: Set Your Financial Intentions

Place the four seeds onto your dominant hand. Start thinking about the four seeds you will be planting this year to ensure financial success: financial planning, wise investments/savings, being frugal and working hard.

Envision yourself sitting at the kitchen table creating a budget plan, calculating your bills, looking for jobs or wise investments, clipping coupons, and doing things yourself rather than paying for them (like making your own lunch or coffee instead of going out for it at work).

Squeeze the seeds in your hand as you visualize yourself doing these things in as detailed a way as your mind can conjure up.

When you’re finished, ‘plant’ the seeds in the cinnamon. Hold your hands over the planted seeds. Then, touching the tips of your index fingers and thumbs, form a sort of diamond-shaped opening between the hands. Let the rays of the Sun funnel through that opening, charging the components with solar energy.

Step 6: Seal Your Intentions

Take your coin and lay it on top. The coin acts as a ‘seal’ for your intentions. Having your birth year on it, the coin is connected to you. The gold represents all your potential and abilities for success.

Step 7: Perform a Closing

Gather up the edges of the fabric and tie it with the ribbon to create a small pouch.

New Year's Eve is a magical night.

New Year's Eve is a magical night.

Charging the Charm on New Year’s Eve

Now that you are all prepared, keep the charm bag on you at all times until New Year’s Eve.

As midnight arrives, start to become aware of the building energy around you. That’s the energy built off the excitement and hopes of millions of people. Just before midnight on New Year’s Eve, take your little charm out and hold it in your dominant hand.

When the countdown arrives, hold out your non-dominant (your receptive) hand with the palm facing outward. You don’t have to be conspicuous. Just hold it up over your head or up at chest height, as though you’re just excited like everyone else. You should have your charm in the other hand.

As the countdown commences, imagine your hand is like a giant electro-magnet you’ve turned on. Envision all that energy in the air, all over the city—the state, the entire time zone—building and building. It’s the energy of millions of people, and envision it gathering and gathering and gathering into your hand through the whole countdown.

At midnight, put your hands together with the charm bag and shout, “Happy New Year!” In your mind, know you will be happy because you will become wealthier. Hold the charm between your hands and direct that energy into the bag. Envision it pouring into the bag and the bag absorbing it—notice how it’s just tingling and pulsating with power.

It’s best not to keep the bag directly on your person for a while, as it is quite potent. Hang it or place it on a shelf somewhere in your home or office. If you own a business with a till, put it into the till. If you have a drawer for your finances, where you keep your checkbook and credit cards and bills and such, put it in there.

After a couple of months, you can start carrying it around in your purse or pocket for the rest of the year. At the Summer Solstice, you can recharge it and bury it on your property if you like. This last step is not necessary—the spell will continue to carry you through the year even if you don't bury the charm bag.

Charging the Charm at Another Time

If you can’t charge it on New Year’s Eve, you can use this spell at any point between New Year and the next Solstice (that would be Summer Solstice for those in the Northern hemisphere; Winter Solstice for those in the Southern hemisphere). For some reason, when the energies of the Solstice shift you into a waning Sun, it just doesn’t give it the same power.

When the correct timing arrives, you’ll have to build your own energy. What is the best way you usually do this? Chanting? Stomping? Dancing? Standing still and drawing it from the elements around you?

Whatever your preferred way of raising energy, do it. Try to keep it up for at least 15 minutes, longer if you can. Draw in the energy, sensing it building and building, directing it to your receptive (non-dominant) hand. Hold the charm in the projective (dominant) hand.

When you feel you’ve built all the energy you can, put your hands together and pour it into the bag, yelling (or saying very firmly), “This is the start of a new, prosperous cycle for me!”

Unlike bags charged on New Year’s Eve, you can keep this one on your person. You can put it directly into your pocket or bag, or you can stash it somewhere related to your finances (e.g., your home office; your workspace) where you feel it would be most effective.

An Annual Ritual

You can re-cast this spell every year. In my experience, its effects are cumulative and get stronger every year. Enjoy, and a healthy, wealthy New Year to you!

If one has a gold coin, but it does not have any year on it (the newly minted ones), can one just carve the birth year into it? I figure if one can paint a regular coin gold, it would bake sense to put a year onto one that it already gold?

Mackenzie Sage Wright (author) on December 29, 2013:

Hi d. I'm so sorry you are having a rough year. I think it's been bad for a lot of people, particularly with the state of the economy, and it can really put a damper on things. Anything is worth a try... hang in there, things can only go up from here it seems. Have a happy and abundant new year.

d.william from Somewhere in the south on December 29, 2013:

Great hub. Very interesting to read this at the lowest depth of my 2013 depression. I will give it a shot, nothing else has seemed to work out for me in 2013.

Mackenzie Sage Wright (author) on December 29, 2013:

Hi Jenny; It really shouldn't be that difficult, particularly with pennies. Unless you were born before 1935 the should be pretty abundant. If worse comes to worse get a plastic coin and scratch your birth year into it with a pin. Good luck and have a happy, prosperous New Year!

What if I cannot find a coin with my birth year on it?

Mackenzie Sage Wright (author) on December 25, 2013:

Hi Kalisto-- you have to hunt for them but it shouldn't be that difficult. Go through your pocket change. if you know someone who keeps a container and saves their change, you can ask them to look through it for a coin with that year. If you work in a store on a register you can keep an eye out for it, too... keep some coins on hand and exchange them if you come across one. If all else fails you can always go to the bank and get a couple of rolls of pennies and search through them. When you are done with them you can always exchange the rest back for dollars.

When you find one, paint it gold. Good luck with your spell!

How can I find a coin with my birth year

Mackenzie Sage Wright (author) on January 07, 2013:

Thanks Adrian! Happy New Year! So true, I am so glad we are moving past these end-of-the-world conspiracies. I do think things are going to start improving now, and a lot more people will begin looking forward.

Mackenzie Sage Wright (author) on January 07, 2013:

Happy New Year, Sonia, thanks. I am so glad you found something you could use here.

Adrian Lavelle from Galway, Ireland on January 04, 2013:

This is cool, I have to try it...I was saying to someone that now that we're in the age of Aquarius that there will be more inner optimism in people in 2013, whether they realize it or not, the new age the Mayan's predicted rather than the end of the world that so many people believed...I think now the scare is over, people will be more positive, like you say in your hub, a tremendous release of energy!

Sonia Perozzi from California on January 03, 2013:

Thank you for giving wonderful ways on how to honor this special day in the Wicca way! Really fabulous:)

Mackenzie Sage Wright (author) on December 31, 2012:

Every little bit helps! I always think a little magical boost can really make the difference sometimes. Thanks for stopping by!

Mackenzie Sage Wright (author) on December 31, 2012:

I totally agree! I always cast spells on myself, not others.

Mackenzie Sage Wright (author) on December 31, 2012:

You can definitely do it another time, DzyMsLizzy (love that name!). Any fabric that feels "rich" or makes you think of wealth is fine though. I sometimes get shirts from thrift shops for a couple of bucks because they have a stain or something, I cut them up and use them. Great way to get small patches of cheap silk, satin and other fabrics when you just need a bit.

Nell Rose from England on December 30, 2012:

This is really interesting, and something I need to do, lol! I have a spell book that I always used to dabble in, time to get back to it I think! have a great new year!

Laura Brown from Barrie, Ontario, Canada on December 30, 2012:

Smart idea to post about New Years and Wiccan ideas. I haven't done much with magic. It's so close to crossing the line of the Wiccan Rede for me. I know how much it aggravates me to be manipulated, personally. So I'm really dainty-footed when it comes to using something outside of my own communication with another person, to change anything. But, pulling in luck (or financial energy) isn't really manipulating anyone. So, that seems like a good idea for the New Year. :)

Liz Elias from Oakley, CA on December 29, 2012:

Interesting. I'm not only a beginner, but not a Wiccan...more 'generic pagan.' ...

I will have to try this at another time, as I won't have time between now and NYE to collect the requisite items, particularly the fabric. :-(

Voted up and interesting.
