Could You Be a Witch? Have You Got What It Takes?

Author:

Born in deepest Cornwall, now living in wild Wales, Bev has been practising her personal brand of eclectic witchcraft for years and years.

Guess what? Witches are ordinary people. Do you think that is a weird thing to say? It’s true. Witches are normal, ordinary, everyday folk who have an extra dimension to their lives. For some, it is lighthearted playfulness—a fleeting interest—whereas others immerse themselves completely into witchcraft so that it becomes a way of life.

Most witches fall somewhere in between. They realize that they have to work, study, raise children, etc., but at the same time, they know they have the power to make life a little easier, a little magickal.

You, too, can tap into the power of witchcraft.

Everyone Has Access to Magick

If you have ever stood alone in a squalling storm and felt power surging through you, or found yourself so in awe of the full moon that you wanted to cry, or looked into a baby’s eyes and seen the whole universe stretching away into infinity, then you have experienced the energy of magick and the magick of energy.

Imagine, then, if you could channel that immense energy into whatever you desire. If you could take that energy at will and transform it into intent. You can. And it’s not that hard to do.

Firstly, know this:

Your Power Has Been Taken Away From You

Thousands of years ago, people were able to manipulate their emotional energy to get what they desired. They needed no intermediary; no witchdoctor, no man of God, no royalty to intercede on their behalf with the power of the universe. Anyone could gaze at the moon, raise their energy and emotions and visualize a good hunting day, a suitable mate, an easy birth, or a warm, dry place to live.

Then gradually maybe people got lazy, or perhaps one among them seized an opportunity to put themselves above their peers. The ways of manipulating energy became the realm of the select few. Scholars made the process more and more complicated. They wrote it all down. Then they hid the knowledge away, admitting only the favored ones.

That was religion. Religion is the controlling of the masses by restricting access to knowledge that, once upon a time, everyone knew. If any person dared to practice the craft of magick, they were condemned as heretics and witches. They faced expulsion from their communities and later even torture and death. People were encouraged to place their faith, not in themselves and the universal forces, but in the priesthood and some manufactured deity.

These days it is society itself, that ‘self-regulates’. The restrictions placed upon people by religion in times gone by has morphed into a sheep-like acceptance by global society that, as individuals, we have no power, barely any control over our own lives. Well, it doesn’t have to be like that. You can take back control.

What Is a Witch, Exactly?

  • In popular culture, a witch has special magical, super-human powers. They don’t.
  • Witches are psychic. Not necessarily. Some are; most are not.
  • Witches cast spells. Maybe, sometimes.
  • Black magick is a favorite with witches. No, it is not.
  • Witches do bad stuff. No more than any other person.
  • Witches worship the Devil. Nope, sorry, we don’t.
  • They always wear black and look like Goths. No. Not to the office. Maybe on the weekends, we'll break out the stripy tights.

The only difference between a witch and a non-witch is the fact that the former knows how to encourage change to occur by manipulating energy. It’s not a special secret talent, anyone can learn to do it. And you don’t even have to call yourself ‘witch’.

I Like the Idea of Being a Witch

OK, that’s great. I recommend that you spend some time reading up what witches do. It can be as simple as working a couple of spells a month, or as in-depth as practicing high-magick rituals and learning lists of correspondences (things that share certain qualities).

There are many types of witchcraft traditions, so have a look at What Kind of Witch are You? to see if any of them appeal to you. If not, settle for being an Eclectic witch for now. That’s someone who takes a little of this and a little of that. Someone who is open to exploring many different aspects of witchcraft.

Should you be a young person, then please take it seriously. Get yourself a couple of good books and learn all you can. Stay away from the spellbooks for the time being. I have heard many stories of people regretting casting spells in their younger lives.

Taking Responsibility for Working With Energy

It can be so tempting to realize you have this power, literally at your fingertips. You are excited to get going. To create your perfect life. I can understand completely why you would want to launch yourself into all kinds of spells. Yet, it is really important to know that with this power comes a great deal of responsibility.

Let me share a story someone told me the other day. When quite young, this girl did a spell to bring her crush to her. It worked. Too well. He turned up almost immediately, and when she tried to slow things down, he assaulted her. Be careful what, and who, you wish for.

Another person recognized that her spells had caused havoc in her life and that of others. She is living with the repercussions today. She is still drawn to witchcraft but feels a greater sense of responsibility. This is so important, but what does it mean?

It means that you should never cast a spell that may alter another person’s life. You cannot use magick for manipulation. How would you feel if someone did it to you?

I know that many people may be wanting to attract the attention of someone special, but instead of being specific, you must concentrate on the feeling of being wanted or loved. Keep it general. If that person is really attracted to you, then the universe will make sure things work out between you. However, if that person isn't right, then someone even better will come along to fulfill the outcome of the spell.

A Good Witch Practices Restraint

One thing we learn as we grow older is that sometimes all it takes for our desired outcome to manifest is to wait. The more you learn how to use power, the more you become aware of your thoughts. Those spoken and unspoken thoughts and wishes are like mini spells. If your desire is pure (by that I mean that you aren’t contradicting yourself by believing you can’t have whatever it is), then sometimes that desire will happen without any other universe-nudging from you. Patience is, indeed, a virtue.

Therefore, it isn't good to be casting spells like they are going out of fashion. It’s much better to consider the possible consequences and to wait a little to see if your desire is still strong in a week, a month, or longer.

But I Really Want a Better Life

Of course; we all do. However, a huge seismic shift in one’s life can be difficult to handle, so use your magick, but use it well. It’s much better that circumstances change gradually, but steadily. Start small. With little things that aren’t particularly life-changing for anyone. Let me share something that happened very recently, in fact just a couple of weeks before writing this.

My daughter is a music student. She performs regularly on stage and we were looking for a dress that would be suitable for her Christmas show. We spotted the perfect dress in the window of a charity/thrift shop. Deep red velvet and slightly sparkly. When we examined the ticket, it said “Not for sale, display only until Jan 2nd” Disappointed, we asked if we could put a deposit on it—it would do perfectly fine for next Christmas, and I was willing to pay whatever they wanted for it (there was no price on it). We were told no, come back on Jan 2nd and it’s first come, first served.

Of course, later that day, I did a spell. I knew we wouldn’t get the dress in time for this year’s show, but my girl would look stunning in it, she’s tall, slim, and dark-haired. It was though it was made for her. I just knew we were going to get it. Every time I thought about it, I smiled, completely confident that it would be ours. Then we sort of put it to one side. Almost forgot about it with all the celebratory stuff going on. I was hoping my mother would be able to get to the shop on the 2nd and snap it up for us.

Anyway, right after Christmas on the 29th, a family visit to us was unexpectedly postponed, so, as it was Saturday, my daughter and I decided to visit my mother. And, of course, pop into the nearby charity shop to see what lovely things people had dropped off right after the holiday. We spotted it right away. The dress wasn’t on display anymore and was hanging on a rack just inside the door, where a sign had been posted, “All dresses half price”. We bought it for £5, that’s about $8. It’s designer, Roland Klein. In perfect condition.

Do you see how the universe conspired to get me what I wanted? The dress was taken off display early. The visit was postponed, no big deal. And we were inspired to go into town to visit my mother. And even better, the price was so low as to be almost free. And no-one was harmed by the spell.

So, start with things that don’t matter too much. It’s easier to believe that they will happen for you. Don’t do spells for millions of dollars: that could impact your life in negative ways unless you are ready for it. Instead begin with asking for a few hundred, or maybe a promotion, or a new job opportunity. Or perhaps you spied a dress you want?

Spell for a Red Dress

I use this simple spell construct for most of my workings. It’s a good idea to play around with the wording of the spell beforehand. I like to create little rhymes as they are easy to say and have a certain impact.

Items Required:

  • Pen
  • Paper
  • Small candle (a tea light is perfect)

Steps

Spend a moment setting your intention for what is wanted. See it clearly in your imagination. Feel the feeling of your wish coming true. In this case, I visualized my daughter wearing the dress and looking stunningly gorgeous on stage. I felt all the pride a mother could feel.

Write out your wish, or charm. You will have already worked out what you are going to say, so just write it down again with intent.

This was mine:

By the power invested in me by the Universe
My beautiful girl will own that red dress.

Read it out loud three times, then say,

As I speak these words, so must it be, and let it harm none.

Light the candle, fold up the paper, all the while feeling confident and knowing that the wish will come true. You really have to KNOW it.

Place the paper under the candle and allow it to burn out in a safe place. You don’t have to use a candle either, you could simply tear the paper into tiny pieces and bury or trash it.

Now relax your shoulders, breathe deeply and feel at peace with the world. All is well.

Spells to Avoid

  • Don’t try to manipulate specific people. Don’t try to change their feelings or actions. No good will ever come from it.
  • Don’t do a healing spell unless you have asked the person if they’d like you to do one. Sometimes people have attracted things into their lives in order to learn from the experience. Even if it appears negative to you.

Spells to Use With Caution

  • Large amounts of money spells
  • Banishing spells
  • Binding spells

Spells to Try

  • Small amounts of money, building to larger ones.
  • Job, promotion, new opportunities.
  • Items that you would like to have in your life.
  • Trips to places you’d love to visit.
  • Love, in general, no specific names.
  • Good health for yourself.
  • Fun times with friends.
  • Protection from harm.
  • Success in exams (you still have to put the necessary work in, remember).
  • Confidence and success in interviews.
  • Inspiration and creativity.
  • Peace and harmony—again no names. Be general.

Questions & Answers

Question: When doing the spell, can I place the paper into the flame and leave it to burn there? If the candle was a tea light candle in, say, a deep glass bowl? I’m not overly familiar with candles and don’t want to do anything unsafe

Answer: As long as you place the whole shebang into the kitchen sink or a non-plastic bathtub. Otherwise, just throw the paper in the trash. Don't mess with fire if you are not sure what you are doing. It only takes a single spark to start a fire.

Question: I read that different types of spells work at different times. Some spells could happen right away, over several days, or even several weeks. What does this mean? Also, what does it mean if you are too specific, or too vague, when casting a spell?

Answer: It all depends on the general situation. Once you have cast a spell, you turn it over to universal energy to deal with. How it works depends on what circumstances need to come together to deliver the result. Sometimes it's fast; other times it can take months. It's not our job to try to change that.

You can be too specific if you wish, for example, a certain person to become attracted to you. It is better to keep it open and cast a spell for love. If you focus on one person, you could end up with a lot of problems.

If you are too vague in such things as casting spells for money, you might not get what you want. So for instance, it is better to cast for $100 or $1,000 or whatever, rather than 'please send me more money.' More money can be a single dollar. And, particular with money spells, there's no point working a spell for billions of dollars, the universe can only bring you what is in your realistic expectations.

Question: I just started doing research on the supernatural. It made me curious to gain more information in witchcraft. The more I read the more I get drawn towards it. I need guidance to start somewhere. I lost someone close to me, and now I just feel like I am missing myself. Where do I start?

Answer: There are lots of resources available to help you get started. Just treat it as an exploratory process for the time being. You'll know soon enough if it is the right path for you.

Question: I am trying to be more in tune with the earth and nature, so I'm eating more foods from the earth. I add a few blades of grass to my salads and grind up acorns to put in my cereal. These give my stomach a funny feeling, so I need different earth foods found in nature to incorporate. Any tips?

Answer: Please don't consume things that humans don't normally eat. You could damage your liver and kidneys, or worse, your neurological systems. Instead, think about cultivating and eating culinary herbs to add to your regular meals.

Question: I've always thought I had blonde hair, but recently a friend told me my hair is brown. My questions are: 1. could someone have cast a colour-blindness spell upon me? 2. Do witches tend to have blonde, brown, black, or red hair? I'm thinking about dyeing my hair, but will this change my aura?

Answer: No, there is no colour-blindness spell on you. What would be the point? Light hair usually gets darker as you get older. Witches have hair of all different colours, including artificial shades. If you want to dye your hair, go ahead, it won't affect anything except your hair.

Question: I have always felt connected to the moon. I love nature, and since childhood, injured animals come to me like a magnet and I nurse them. I have always loved crows and they sit near me when I am sad or crying. Is it possible I am a witch?

Answer: It's possible that you could choose to become a witch. Witches are people who do witchcraft. So it depends if you are drawn to things like spell work, divination, and healing.

Question: I cast a spell during the Ostara moon, and I'm afraid it may have serious consequences. This was a love spell and I want to take it back. The person who I put the spell on is actually a disgusting human. Can a spell be reversed after it has been cast?

Answer: You will have to work a counter-spell that is stronger than the original. You can use the first spell as the basis. You'll need to devise it yourself. Make sure that you wish no harm on this person; all you want to do is negate his attraction to you. Make him lose interest. You can begin by making yourself boring.

Question: I have stumbled upon your article, which I take to be a sign from the universe. I have these rumblings inside of me, deep in my soul. Sometimes I see the moon on people's foreheads. Purple is my favorite color, the highest chakra, the color of royalty. Some say I speak in tongues, and these messages come from a sacred place inside me. Do I have what it takes to be a witch?

Answer: You have got what it takes. Remember that becoming a witch is a choice. These articles might help you:

Question: I want to cast a love spell but don't want to wait so long for the moon phases to change. Is the spell going to be affected in any way just because the moon phase is off by a bit?

Answer: The reason witches work in phase with the moon cycles is because it helps to have that extra boost. Working a spell 'against' the moon is a little like cycling into a headwind. It's not going to make a huge difference.

Remember, working spells to manipulate someone's feelings and behavior isn't recommended.

Question: How do you do a trick to make an object appear using witchcraft?

Answer: You get yourself a conjuring set and learn how to use it. This kind of thing has nothing to do with witchcraft.

Question: I am a 23 years old woman and, from childhood, I have been attracted to witchcraft. I dream a lot and sometimes my dreams happen in real life. I can sense energy and my intuition often turns out to be right. I think I am a witch but I am not sure? I'm afraid of performing any ritual because I may attract a negative energy.

Answer: It sounds as though you are an intuitive, which means you are able to pick up energy, as you say. This is not unusual and you can train yourself to recognize the patterns and messages. I always recommend that people journal all their 'otherworldly' experiences in detail in order to explore and increase their awareness.

Witchcraft is something else. It is a craft, a way of life, and therefore is a choice. Being an intuitive gives you a head start with the craft and can be incorporated really well, but it has to be something you choose to do.

Question: Do you have to be a certain age in order to be a witch?

Answer: If you have to ask, then you are probably too young. Witches, by definition, are wise people with a lot of life experience. Being a witch isn't just about casting spells, it's about living your life in a certain way.

There's no age requirement, but most training groups will not accept anyone under 18. So use that as your guide.

Question: I'm scared to do spells because in the past I would do it naturally and it often backfired. I would get what I asked for but something else would be taken away from me. How do I know whether a spell won't have repercussions for me?

Answer: You don't. That's why spell casting must be undertaken carefully. You have to decide whether a spell is really necessary and you also have to carry out a sort of risk assessment to ascertain what the possible negative outcomes might be. When casting spells you should also include a clause, such as the widely used, "An' it harm none." or words to that effect.

This article explains it all it in more detail: https://exemplore.com/wicca-witchcraft/What-I-Need...

Question: Can drawing be a part of witchcraft? How exactly would this work?

Answer: Yes, drawing can be part of the craft. It's a great way to express your desired change. You can create intricate sigils or merely work in the way you prefer. You'll need to undertake an exploration of how to make it effective for you. That will be your unique journey of discovery. I recommend starting an art journal that could evolve into your personal grimoire or Book of Shadows (Wiccan).

No, absolutely not. What if that bad luck bounced back on you or your friend? What if something really horrible happened to that person and you knew you might have been responsible for it?

Once you have manipulated energy in that way, it is near impossible to reverse or stop it. It's the worst kind of witchcraft and very irresponsible.

Hi Bev G

I enjoyed your article I like how you give your own experience doing a spells to help your daughter get the red dress in a lesson how to do a spell . Explaining how the spell events help you get the dress. So you need to work on your intention with your imagination see your outcome happening, and feeling confident and knowing the spell will work. I know writing down what you want helps you forces on your desire what does tear the paper mean.

How did your daughter do in the show is she a singer.
