Ways to Conduct a Transformational New Moon Ritual

Lydia is a practicing Druid who has dipped her toes into various occult organizations over the years.

There are various ways to tap into the energy of this lunar phase.

There are various ways to tap into the energy of this lunar phase.

What Is the New Moon?

The New Moon is the lunar phase when the Moon first appears as a small crescent in the sky. It occurs right after the Sun and the Moon have been in conjunct. This is the very beginning of the Waxing Moon phase and is a powerful time to start taking the initial steps toward projects you wish to bear fruit.

A New Moon ritual is as simple as committing to some practices you will engage in each time this lunar phase occurs. Rituals are not exactly the same thing as casting a spell or conducting a ceremony, but they tend to be spiritual in nature. You can incorporate ceremony and spellwork into your rituals, but they are mostly about finding practices that align us with our broader vision.

Fresh Beginnings and Bold Intentions

The New Moon is a time of new beginnings and initiating projects. Ask yourself what kinds of new things you wish to introduce into your life. Now is a powerful time to pick the targets you strive for and to plot out how to approach tackling an important life goal.

The New Moon immediately precedes the Waxing Moon phase, which is when you can usually plan to experience growth in your life. As such, it can be a good idea to review your personal goals at the time of the New Moon. You can prepare for the Waxing Moon by sorting out your biggest priorities and picking what you want to focus on building in your life over the next two weeks. I suggest getting out your calendar and writing out one small action to complete each day in order to get where you want to go.

You can also use this time to review your personal schedule. Allocate the appropriate amount of time to invest in your goals each day and be mindful of your limitations. Don't set yourself up for failure by trying to do too much too fast. Move steadily with little increments—just as the Moon does. Pick some intentions to come to fruition by the time of the Full Moon.

Take a Ritual Bath

Cleansing yourself with a ritual bath or shower can be a great New Moon practice. You can make ritual bath salts using herbs or essential oils that align with your intentions. One of my favorite websites for researching herbal correspondence is Alchemy-Works. The herb you choose could correspond with the astrological sign the Moon was just conjunct in, or you could select an herb that is currently in season in the region where you live. Foraging an herb to focus on for each New Moon can get us in harmony with the seasons.

Take a Walk or Meet New People

Take a walk during the New Moon and visit places that will inspire you. Get out and speculate about your options and possibilities, or find new resources. For example, you could prioritize price shopping to figure out a budget for your new projects. Essentially, during this phase you want to try and do the footwork that will help you carve a path for the coming weeks.

Though this phase is about setting new intentions and goals, don't quit pursuing something you care about at this time. Remember that all projects and goals are moving through their own unique cycle and process, so some of your goals will be at different stages. Use the Full Moon as a time for closure on some projects, but remain open to new people, places, and things during the New Moon. This is a good time for meeting new people. As the Moon grows, so will your intention.

Seed Intentions and Focus Your Goals

You can take this quite literally by picking some seeds or herbs to grow in your life—it doesn't matter if it isn't the gardening season! You could purchase seeds that reflect your intentions for the future and plant them. You can also pursue this goal less literally simply by adding a new element or two to your routine. For example, you could choose a new gemstone to work with. Select one that works with your intentions for the coming weeks.

Most importantly, figure out what your most important life goals are. Don't scatter your energy by working on too many things at once. Picking just a few areas to focus on gives us the ability to prioritize. What area of your life do you need to focus on right now? What are your biggest problems and your most intense desires? Which situations give you the greatest anxiety? Figure out areas where your life is out of balance. What can you build upon in order to restore balance?

Create Sacred Space

Create a sacred space at the time of the New Moon. This could be as simple as selecting a window sill to house your crystals. You could also throw a blanket and some cushions down on your living room floor. Make your atmosphere a relaxing place to get in touch with your inner guide and intuition. Purchase some new incense or essential oil to fill your space with a beautiful new aroma.

Gather up some sacred supplies—bring in sacred objects, pictures, herbs, stones, and crystals. You can use these to create a vision board to gaze upon as you work with daily affirmations or listen to a motivational speech. You can also use this time to refresh your altar and/or renew your commitment to your particular deities with a prayer.

Renew Your Commitments

Renew your commitments during the New Moon. You can do this by cleansing and smudging your living space as you work with personal chants. Put on music with the kind of energy you want to invite into your life. The New Moon is birthing the new lunar cycle and is the perfect time for you to birth your own wishes and desires.

Open Yourself to New Possibilities

Become open to the new possibilities of this lunar cycle. Look at the astrological sign the New Moon is in—its energy is ready to tap into. Get in touch with the seasonal tides and reflect on which energies are most potent right now. For example, a New Moon in the winter will have a different set of priorities than one that occurs in the summer. Timing is an important part of successful magickal workings.

The New Moon is a time of hope, so spend time envisioning your hopes and dreams. Allow yourself to dream and doodle. You can get out a sketchbook and draw random pictures to gain inspiration. Visit someplace new that you have always wanted to go. Be specific about your dreams and ambitions by putting them in writing or reading them aloud.

Further Inspiration

Hopefully, I have given you some fresh new ideas to incorporate into your ritual magic. For further exploration, I highly recommend Diana Alquist's book The Moon and You. It is a wonderful resource full of great ideas to tap into the lunar energies throughout the month.
