I wonder if they found one...

In the waning hours of the year and, possibly, the existence of Twitter as a social media juggernaut, many Twitter users are sharing their favorite stories. This gentleman says it’s been ten years since he saw his favorite classified ad in an Oklahoma newspaper. The ad states: “I am quite sure most of you have seen the rather large green dragon that has been flying over northeast OKC for the better part of a week. I am looking for someone to: Lure said dragon away from OKC to a more rural area; force said dragon to land in rural area; slay said dragon in whatever way you see fit. No pay, dragon slaying is its own reward. Please note that I am not talking about the red dragon that frequents the area from time to time. He and I have an agreement.”

This ad caused a lot of confusion when it was first published, and was actually the subject of several viral internet sensations. But what’s it really all about?

Why is up with this ad? Is there really a dragon menacing the Oklahoma countryside? Or is someone doing a bit of creative writing in the newspaper?

Turns out, it’s neither. A close examination of the classified ad reveals that at the bottom is a cut off black box whose text most likely reads: “To submit your funny classifieds…” One can only assume that the line after that is something about how to do so. It appears that rather than looking for dragon slayers, it was some newspaper employees looking for classified ad revenue.

Additionally, the ad itself does not appear to be original to the Oklahoma paper, and was initially posted on a Michigan Craigslist item several months earlier.
