Empath Science: Where Does the Empathic Ability Come From?

I am an avid opportunist, entrepreneur, life contributor, multi-tasker, mischief maker, and jill of all trades.

Where Do Empaths Get Their Gifts?

A reader recently asked, "where do empaths get their gifts?"

This is a very good question and one I can assure you that many have sought to answer. It's also a question that really doesn't have any definitive right or wrong answer. It simply depends on what type of answer you're looking for. However, before we dive too far into explaining where empathic abilities come from, I would first like to go over what abilities are most commonly found within empaths.

The Three Empathic Abilities

  • Clairsentience: Translated to mean "clear feeling," it is the ability to sense or directly feel the energies of other beings. This can manifest in feeling or sensing the emotions, spiritual/energetic state, or physical pains of another being, or it can be an intense intuitive gift. Clairsentience is the most common trait amongst empaths and ESPs, though empaths learn to train themselves to control the ability, whereas the ability often takes over or overwhelms the lives of an ESP.
  • Healing: Empaths possess a unique ability to heal a person from an energetic level. As an ESP, this is often done using a chaotic and energy-consuming process of drawing out imbalanced energies from the person in need of healing, then replacing the energies in the person being healed with the energies from the healer. An empath can also do this easily, though they learn to train themselves to only resort to this sort of healing in emergency-type situations, as it is much more healthy for the empath and the person being healed if they guide the person through the process of healing themselves.
  • Energy Recycling: This is a process of rebalancing energies. It is most often used when an empath "recharges" their own personal energies, and is done through a process of directing imbalanced energies out to proper channels that naturally recycle themselves and then drawing in energies from proper channels that create pure forms of balanced energies.

From a Scientific Point of View

From a scientific point of view, each human body produces its own energy. This energy is all over and inside the body and has been proved variously throughout history. In both psychological and physiological studies, one person's energy can definitely affect the energy of another person and so forth. This means that we all have the ability to sense the energy around us and be affected by even the most subtle change in the energies around us.

From a scientific perspective, an ESP is someone who is highly sensitive to the energies of themselves and those around them. An empath is an ESP who has learned to work with those energies to help guide others in keeping a good balance of energy in themselves and the world around them. Empaths work in much the same way that crystal healers, energy workers, and acupuncturists do: They work with specific meridians and energy points in the body to bring about proper health in all parts of our body, mind, and spirit/energy.

From a Metaphysical Point of View

"Metaphysics" essentially means "beyond physics." It's generally thought of as a scientific method of exploring the world that uses mostly empirical evidence but also includes the spiritual/energetic phenomenons of the world that can't always be directly explained. So when we look at the empathic abilities from a metaphysical perspective, things change just a little bit.

This is often where you will see a lot of kirlian (a.k.a corellian) photography, which essentially proves that humans, animals, and plants all have a very specific aura. The catch is that empirical science can't prove exactly how it works, which often leads to a belief in the scientific community that kirlian photography is some kind of hoax, even though there are plenty of other ways to prove the energy field exists around humans.

To get back on track, from a metaphysical point of view, the ability to be sensitive to the energies of other beings on this planet is a basic human phenomenon that starts at birth (or even before that). We are all born with energy centers and an aura that creates a cloud around our body that can be sensed by others and that we can sense from them.

So the empathic ability is simply an extension of that. A learned skill of honing the ESP ability into a craft of knowledge sensing and healing.

A Spiritual Perspective

From a spiritual perspective, things are almost easier to explain, while still being less clear on the empirical end.

We all have a spirit, which is our energy source. It is what truly makes us "alive." Without a spirit, we would just be animated bodies and nothing more. Our energy source needs just as much care and compassion as our mind and body do, which is where empaths get their source of inspiration and power for healing. It's endowed on them by the source of all things (in whatever form you'd like to name the source). The abilities are there in every being, even though only a small percentage actually acknowledge and follow the call.

When an empath heals or helps another person heal themselves, they are basically just cleansing their spirit and helping to balance the energies of the world. This helps to bring about a balance in all things because we are all connected by this spirit and energy.

Before I got cleat spiritual laws and how they work, I was overshadowed with fear of this gift. While I cannot say I fully understand its content because each case I met revealed different experiences, I could only embrace this abilities and be grateful that I can truly help others to feel better. It is enabling factor in counselling and life coaching.

I'm really happy in my own home. But the family around me is crazy. I'm not surprise but some but shock by others doing and feeling. And all of it hurts me to my core. And sit and cry over everyone else. How do I control these emotions? I had a friend tell me today I'm an empath. And until now had no idea. Would love to learn more. It explains alot.

High I am an empath. I have always felt others feelings and pain. Sometimes even know what they are thinking. I do have a problem being in public and being over whelmed at times. Im learning to meditate and ground myself before i go anywhere.

Hello Bella, thank you for joining the conversation. Everyone has the empathic seed in them. It's not something that one person has and another doesn't. Though there are different degrees to which empathic abilities effect a person. On a basic level, it's just your intuition. Where it gets into the level of being an empath, is when you find it effects you on a such a level that you need to begin practicing specific techniques and developing skills that allow you to both follow the call and function in the ordinary world without feeling like your head will explode. If you feel like your headaches get to that level, i would suggest you immediately begin practicing meditation and building up your auric shield =)

I am not sure if I am an Empath but I can tell how people feel and when I know what they feel I feel like them and My Head Hurts All The Time Im Not Sure If That's Just My Head Hurting Or Is It Me Feeling Everyone Around Me that is hurting.Like im shy and I feel like I have to help people and I can sort of feel if someone is lying and one day I felt that something might happen to my brother and he got hit by a car on that day.

Im an Empath?

I understand your frustration Michelle, and I'm more than happy to allow a place for you to vent for a moment, though please do not come and type your comments in ALL CAPS. I will give this comment a few days so you can come and ask for help without digitally "screaming" at everyone, then I'm gonna delete the comment.

If you don't mind doing that, I can help you get life to seem less hectic and definitely less "curse like" then it has. It really can be much easier then you're currently experiencing =) *Hugs*

Empathy is the ability to put yourself in someone else's shoes, how to understand how another person feels or is affected by something. Narcissists (which I write about) have a severe lack of empathy and therefore an Empath could be considered to be somewhat the opposite of a narcissist.

Whereas a narcissist cannot relate to another person's feelings, an empath can't help but feel them.

Good hub.

PermissionGiver (author) from Lake Stevens on August 06, 2011:

Well, this may not be the dictionary definition, but to me... Empathy is objective, sympathy is blind. Empathy is understanding where someone is coming from and offering compassion, where sympathy is making yourself feel the same as another person.

Well on that note..its funny how this thought happened to pop into my head Today..what is the difference between Empathy and Sympathy? What an interesting hub! I find this topic fascinating. I'm sure we do have a spirit, and it needs to be healthy in order for us to be healthy, as you have so gracefully stated in this article. I'm also sure that modern life can be very damaging to our spirits, so it's wise to know how to heal oneself and others.
