Phases of the Moon

Moon phases making up the lunar cycle each have a unique spiritual energy and corresponding symbolic meaning. Each phase has its own characteristics, which make it either a great ally or a great threat for our undertakings—depending on the nature of our actions or decisions.

Your endeavors should be aligned with the current Moon phase if you want its natural energy to work for you and not against you.

What Happens to the Moon During These Phases?

Each of these phases marks a specific position of the Moon. The illumination of the Moon also changes from phase to phase. During the New Moon, it is almost invisible and hardly illuminated, while it reaches its full potential during the Full Moon when it shines most brightly in the sky. After the Full Moon phase, the Moon begins to grow darker.

Waxing and Waning Moon

Waxing Moon

When the Moon is waxing, it's increasing. Whatever intentions you set—or had unconsciously—are now taking place and are slowly beginning to manifest in the physical reality. There may be certain obstacles that need to be overcome with a strong belief in the power of your own intentions and their manifesting potential.

Waxing Moon Phases: New Moon, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous

Waning Moon

The Moon wanes after the fruits of your labor have been manifested. It is now time to harvest them before they disappear, making room for new energy and intentions that will be set during the next New Moon. Think of the Moon phases after the Full Moon as a spring cleaning—out with the old, in with the new.

Waning Moon Phases: Waning Gibbous, Third Quarter, Waning Crescent

  • Note: The Full Moon is right in the middle of this cycle and is when the Moon has reached its full potential. It no longer waxes, but it's not still waning, which means that the Full Moon should be considered separately.

New Moon

Symbolic Interpretations

This phase often represents new beginnings, planting seeds, setting intentions, fresh focus, birth and rebirth, or desires.

Think of your newly set intentions during the New Moon as a seed you planted. Note that even if you don't set intentions consciously, they still reside in your subconscious mind and will be manifested regardless.

Utilize the Energy

To use the New Moon's energy to your advantage, create a sigil, a magickal symbol to which you can imprint your intentions and desires.

Additionally, you can simply write down your intentions and meditate on them. Make them as specific as possible. For example, instead of saying:

I want to earn a lot of money.

I want to earn 5,000$.

Visualize that your wishes are granted. How does it feel to live your dream?

I like to light a red candle and do visualizations over its flame. The color red symbolizes active, potent energy that overcomes all challenges to reach success.

White candles are also a good option. White symbolizes purity and a clean slate. It will cleanse your old energy and make you prepared for a new beginning!

Waxing Crescent

Symbolic Meanings

The Waxing Crescent often represents a channeling of set intentions, concrete action towards a goal, faith, or intensity.

During this phase, we are called to take concrete steps that will lead to our desired goal. We need to take good care of the seed we planted by properly nurturing it. This period will be a pleasant one for new endeavors and will send new people and projects our way.

Utilize the Energy

Break down your end goal into smaller and more attainable goals. Try to make an elaborate plan for how you could get what you want. If you do so, it will be much easier recognizing the opportunities that will surely come during the Waxing Crescent.

Since this period is all about expansion and growth, focus on expanding your social circle, your knowledge, skillset and so on.

This is the perfect time for casting spells for growth, strengthening, or advancement.

First Quarter

Symbolic Meanings

The First Quarter, or Half Moon, is a time characterized by decision making, strength, determination, commitment, or concentration.

It is during this phase that seeds start to make roots. We may encounter obstacles that make our goal harder to obtain, but we mustn’t be discouraged. This period asks us to prove our commitment in the face of hardships and to channel our creative potential to solve possible problems or conflicts.

Utilize the Energy

Create a protection amulet or a talisman. Imagine it to be your shield providing faith in your ability to overcome obstacles with the help of divine protection.

You can also ask for additional protection through prayer. The important thing is to release fear or doubt and know with certainty that a higher power is looking after you.

Doing spells for personal power is of special importance during this period.

Waxing Gibbous

Symbolic Meanings

The Waxing Gibbous is a time that represents finesse, precision, development, gain, or attainment.

This phase symbolizes a successful survival of our seed. The victory is ours, thanks to the determination we exhibited during the Half Moon. This period provides positive circumstances for additional refinement and dealing with delicacies.

Utilize the Energy

During the Waxing Gibbous, you probably already have an idea of how your vision will manifest. Think about whether you want to add or take something out. This is the perfect time to do some additional manifestation rituals or spells.

Lastly, this is when you need to prove your trust and have patience. Include some chants expressing gratitude and faith in your rituals or practice them separately.

Full Moon

Symbolic Meanings

The Full Moon is a powerful phase that represents complete manifestation, full blossom, resolutions, peak, completion, abundance, fertility, and transformation.

This is a time of celebration—our seed has successfully turned into a luscious plant.

Utilize the Energy

Full Moon is right in the middle between the beginning and finalization and should be marked by both gratitude for the manifestation of our desires and preparation for the upcoming decluttering period.

Express your gratitude by a prayer over a white candle.

Make resolutions about things, people, or situations you want to let go of. Clean your everyday environment and downsize your lifestyle.

This period should also be one of regeneration and healing. We may feel drained after working hard, both mentally and physically.

Indulge in some self-love rituals. My favorite one is a self-love bath with red rose petals and pink Himalayan sea salt.

Waning Gibbous

Symbolic Meaning

The Waning Gibbous is a time for gratitude, revelation, or communication.

Throughout this phase, the Moon is no longer fully illuminated. This is the time to reap the benefits of your hard work and bring your manifestation to a final closure and completion. We are also invited to begin with decluttering, both mental and physical.

Utilize the Energy

Turn inward and pay attention to your inner feelings and hidden thoughts. Automatic journaling is a great way to reach our subconscious.

Think about all that's weighing you down. Waning Gibbous allows us to break old habits or bring relationships to a closure less painfully.

Lastly, recognize how your desire manifested into the physical reality and harvest its benefits.

Third Quarter

Symbolic Meaning

During this phase, contemplation, introspection, revaluation, reflection, and responsibility are commonly experienced.

Third Quarter is called the Half Moon (just like the First Quarter) and during this phase, you should revise the process you underwent. The Third Quarter, or the Last Quarter, invites us to do some introspection and to reflect on how our seed turned into a delicious, lush plant, how we nurtured it, and how we overcame obstacles we possibly encountered.

Utilize the Energy

It's time to give back to the Universe. Express your gratitude and serve others. Share the benefits of your manifestation with others, communicate your ideas, or take practical steps to help people around you.

All Waning Moon phases provide favorable circumstances for letting go and resolutions, so you can apply the same methods mentioned for the Waning Gibbous.

Waning Crescent

Symbolic Meaning

This is a time of surrender, release, renewal, and regeneration.

The Waning Crescent represents the finalization of the process and preparation for a new beginning. We are asked to let go of things or people that no longer serve us, in order to make room for things and people that are to come.

Utilize the Energy

Use this time to rest and relax. The best way to do so is to practice regenerative meditation or yoga that will awaken your vital energy.

Invite the transition in and embrace the change because it will come inevitably during the next lunar cycle.

Do some grounding rituals and feel free to surround yourself with healing crystals such as amethyst, clear quartz, or moonstone.

Final Thoughts

Don’t expect the natural energy to do all of the work for you, but think of it as supportive energy that can help your desires transform into something tangible.

A great book you may want to refer to is Diane Ahlquist's Moon Spells: How to Use the Phases of the Moon to Get What You Want. It offers valuable information on how each month alters the Moon's characteristics with its unique energy and contains plenty of magick spells to be performed during particular Moon phases.
