How to Use Switchwords

Updated on June 21, 2019

I've been writing about spiritual and self-development topics for many years. Switchwords are my new favorite thing. Together--Love.

What Are Switchwords?

The psychotherapist Freud first noted Switchwords. He suggested that certain words have the power to reach into, and alter, our subconscious. This idea was seized upon by businessman, James T. Mangan, who wrote his book, The Secret of Perfect Living, although it didn’t sell very well at the time. The reading public was not ready for such a radical concept. They are now, and it's back in print.

So, what are Switchwords? Well, they are just words—simple, everyday words. No-one is certain exactly how they work, but it is likely that it is connected to the vibrational frequency of the word. The meaning of the word is not important—it may be related to its function or it may not.

Who Can Use Switchwords?

Anyone can make use of Switchwords. There’s no danger of harm by their use, so feel free to try them for any situation that they could relieve or improve.

Should you be a little bit witchy or Wiccan, Switchwords are fantastic spell-boosters: Witchcraft & Switchwords: How to Combine Them in Spells.

What Can I Use Switchwords for?

In a word (no pun intended), anything. Switchwords will increase your energy, unleash your creativity, help you find lost objects, deepen your connection to other, promote wealth, attract others to you, and increase your confidence.

Use them to promote your business by increasing your client base, help you lose weight by making you motivated, deepen your understanding, and even relieve constipation. There’s no end to their usefulness.

How I Learned About These "Magic Words"

A long time ago, I was contacted via my tarot website by a gentleman called Shunyam Nirav. He gifted me a copy of an e-book that he had written after finding an old remaindered edition of Mangan’s book in a second-hand store. He’d been fascinated by the idea of these "Switchwords."

Nirav did a lot more research into the concept and identified many more words to add to Mangan’s original list. I was sad to hear that Shunyam Nirav passed away in 2008. I used some Switchwords as a scrolling banner (remember those?) across my page to attract business and make a connection with my readers.

How to Use Switchwords

Switchwords are used in many ways. You can:

  • Whisper or speak one throughout the day.
  • Write them down in a journal.
  • Use them in art or drop them into your writing.
  • Meditate on one or more Switchwords.
  • Some suggest writing them on your skin or labeling your water.
  • Simply use them when you need to.

There are no hard and fast rules for Switchwords. Try them all, or simply use the one that resonates with you. I’ve included the three power words below; these are like the ignition switch in your vehicle. They are "power-ups."

Liz Dean has picked up the Switchword baton and brought the concept right up to date in her book, Switchwords: How to Use One Word to Get What You Want. It's available in print and as Kindle download. During my reading of Liz's book, I found it easy to pick up the Switchword concept where I'd left off all those years earlier.

Power Switchwords

There are three major power words:

  • Together: the Master Switchword. It helps you to focus on your intention. It can be spoken on its own or prior to any other Switchword. Think of it as a kind of magnifying glass through which you are guiding a beam of sunshine. It ignites your desire.
  • Divine: tells the universe/all-that-is to execute a miracle.
  • Bring: is the manifestation power word. Use it alone or with other words to bring you what you want or need.

There are many other power words:

Multiple and Combined Switchwords

I’ve noticed that some people are using them in groups of words, all at the same time, by stringing a number of Switchwords together. Probably because they think they will have a greater effect. I disagree. I think doing this messes up their vibration. At most, I would only use two, or possibly three, together—a power word plus the relevant "instruction" word—some of which are listed in the tables. The energy that makes all this work is not stupid. As long as you know what you want and choose the most appropriate word, it will deliver.

Examples of Combined Words

  • Divine Order: to clean your home fast and efficiently.
  • Together Giggle: to work on a team project.
  • Adjust Alone: to speed up recuperation from an illness.

Common Questions Regarding Switchwords

Is there a set number of times I should chant the words?

No, there isn't any magic number. Do it when you think about the issue.

Are there any Switchwords missing from the lists?

There are a lot more Switchwords that have been "invented" since the original core. In my experience, the ones above, or a combination of them, will cover every situation.

I think my situation is different. Can you help?

Quite honestly, all the help I can give you is right there above. Or scan through the questions already posted. Lots of information lurks there.

Can the Switchwords be used in different categories?

Yes, you can do anything you like with them. So, for instance, if your wish is to complete a certain task, then you'll find that "Done" will work. "Done" is located in the financial section, but it can work with anything.

Switchwords and Your Spiritual Path

Switchwords seamlessly integrate with any other spiritual path, whether it be religious, prayer, energy work, healing, Law of Attraction-based, New Age, meditative, or if you are simply on a journey of self-discovery. It is enough to be aware of them and use them whenever you need to.

If you'd like to ask me a question about Switchwords, please do so. However, look through the lists of questions and comments here to see if I've already answered it. If you also go back over the lists and ideas given in the article and understand that the suggestions I've given are infinitely adaptable, you'll probably find the exact word you need for your situation.

Oh, and that word to relieve constipation? "Swivel."

This article is accurate and true to the best of the author’s knowledge. Content is for informational or entertainment purposes only and does not substitute for personal counsel or professional advice in business, financial, legal, or technical matters.

Questions & Answers

  • What Switchword will help me to improve my business?

There are a selection of business-related Switchwords in the table above, labelled, "10 Switchwords to Attract Money". Choose the ones which are relevant to your situation.

  • Can I use Switchwords anywhere, or should the person I want a deeper relationship with want to be with me?

You simply have to hold the person in your mind. In fact, their presence is likely to be distracting, so use your Switchwords when you are thinking of them, rather than when you are with them.

  • What Switchword can I use to lose weight?

Switchwords can help you lose weight by strengthening your intention to do so. So you can use Divine Bring/Praise to see the beauty in yourself. However, you still have to do the work. It's not a Switchword as far as I know, but I have had success with Divine Release.

  • What is the Switchword for children to score good marks?

Your children need to use the Switchwords themselves. It doesn't really work very well when you try to do it for them. So, as usual, if you look at the lists given in the article, you'll see 'Care', meaning, "To remember, memorize and learn." Teach them to whisper or simply remember to mentally recite 'Care' at intervals while they are studying or taking exams.

  • Which Switchword will help me work to earn more money?

Any of the money ones above will help you. Think about what you want. If you are already working hard, then understand that working even more hard won't necessarily bring more money. You have to get yourself into the mindset and belief that money can come from anywhere.

So go through the list given and see which ones resonate with you.

Hi Harman, there are several words in the lists above that would help you. Try Divine Bring, while holding the thought of your perfect job in your mind. Use Divine Plethora to attract abundance (via work or other means). Use any of the words that feel right to you. There are no wrong ones.

Hope you get your job soon.

Oh, I like a bit of witchcraft, Michael. It's simply harnessing the energy of the universe. I wouldn't call it 'satanic'.

And, of course, it is said that Jesus was the greatest witch who ever lived :)

by the way Bev G i believe in Jesus Christ as my saviour, he is the only way to the Father God. witchcraft has no power over me!!! And the new age is a false religion. It is deception. False lies. Jesus is the only way + God and the holy spirit.

Soaking in the holy spirit! is the key.

I believe all of what the bible says is written in it. maybe this switchwords is a false teaching. not Godly. Kind of satanic.

I Prefer to Praise The Lord 10X Hallelujah! all day long. giving glory to God!

Hello Meghana, it sounds to me as though family counselling might be a good route to go. Switchwords can help, but you still need to take practical steps toward wholeness.

Your experience with your teens is the same as most parents worldwide. I would say pick your battles carefully, don't try to dictate to your children. Be open to listening to their point of view, and be prepared to let them make their own mistakes.

Meanwhile,, look at the words listed under the Love section above and combine them with Together.

Hi Bev, can you please suggest the switch words for my children to listen to what we say and take us seriously and to have harmony at home? Seems like the older they get they don’t want to be part of the cultural experience. For my daughter who is a teenager she things she has a mental illness but won’t talk about it or open up about what the problem is? That puts a lot of stress on all of us. She is very confident, intelligent and independent and other times confused, anxious, and crying what’s going on? Please help. How can she be confident about her culture, feel comfortable about having her friends come over, and be open to us?

I think this is a medical/nutritional expert question, rather than one that can or should be answered by Switchwords.

Personally, I think that people should follow their own body's guidance. If you need to eat, then you should eat. Will power is very over-rated.

Hey Bev, that's a fascinating concept and a very well written, informative hub.

I was reminded of the "Mantra Jaap" which is mentioned in Ancient Indian scriptures, and is followed throught India in Sanatan (Hindu) Faith. They would take a "Mala", a garland of beads, which help to keep count. Each time "Mantra" is chanted, a bead is shifted. Their are various counts, for e.g. 151 - considered an auspicious number - for chanting.

Again, Great Hub. Will definitely figure out more about Switchwords.

Hi .. I'm in relationship where I need to convince the girls' parents as well as my parents and request time for marriage since I need a good job. What switch word can be used to convince both parents and also get a better job ?

Ah, this article showed up in my stream today. Though I recently discovered the concept of switchwords, until I found this article I hadn't read up on them. You certainly have piqued my interest, Bev G. Thank you for the interesting read.

They certainly are :) The whole approach really resonated with me because I was hugely into dreams and dream interpretation for many years, so I'm no stranger to deciphering the language of our unconscious and subconscious mind.

Switchwords has given me a way to speak back - a new tool in the box that I didn't have before. Very enlightening!

After reading your article here I was inspired to buy the book and I'm so glad I did. Switchwords are making such a real difference to my life.

I notice that I don't see the effects for a day or two. For instance yesterday I was having trouble focusing on work so I used some phrases to help, but it wasn't until today that i worked 5 hours straight without a problem. I'm not complaining!

Hi Swatee, I can't guarantee anything, but there's no harm in trying. I suggest, "Together+ Divine+Move". How to use them is in the article above :) Then each day, you should take one small action that moves you closer to your goal.

      Dear Bev G,

I m 40 years old female and have everything that a normal human being wants. Although I always wanted to shift to a big city and have a better quality of life. Can I achieve it through switchwords?

Please suggest what needs to be done.

Hi Anu, try Crystal - for clarity, Help - to reduce confusion and indecision, On - to get new ideas. Also use Divine to cause the universe to work on your behalf. You can use them separately or combine them. You don't have to chant them either. Write them down, whisper or think them. Be open to all kinds of situations and opportunities. Good luck!

It can vary, Pratiksha. Obviously a switchword won't work if one (or both) partner is in a state of resistance. Switchwords work on the individual's energy. You can help matters by speaking as you would normally. If he wants to carry on the silent treatment, that's his choice, but you don't have to join in with him.

How much time does it take to work a particulsr switch word. I have been using switchwords as me and my husband are not in talking terms with each other. I dont know how much time will it take to get the desired result.

Hi Anita, what you are describing is an affirmation; slightly different to switchwords. Most switchwords are not really to do with what they mean. Affirmations are pretty cool too.

Super hub. Love the idea of switch words. I have one that works for me when my funds are low. 'I have money in abundance,' Don't think it is a switch word but works for me. I think that is what Freud meant. That sentence has the power to reach into my subconscious and put me in a happy place.

That is the only bright idea of Freud that I admire.

He also believed that you should act on your sexual impulses, no matter what the consequences. People actually agree with this bit of wisdom from an expert. Utter nonsense.

As far as I am aware, Jagmeet, 'infinity' isn't a switchword, although it should be. All words have energy and I guess infinity would be a great one to mean 'no limits'.

      Well i wanted to know!

What does infinity means in switch words?!

And thank you, Anita for sharing your experience. I agree with you, half, if not 90% of the battle takes place in the mind before any physical action can be effective. Keep up the good work. x

Switch words are so interesting. Although I have not kept it up long enough to see positive results I would imagine that it may cause a different mindset. I did have some astounding positive results with visualization. This took about a year and was something I desperately wanted. The chances of obtaining this desire was practically nil. And yet I achieved it with visualization. A shift?in your mindset can produce miracles. Even wanting to stop smoking or a drug addict that wants to stop taking drugs.will not have success unless they change their mindset and have the desire to stop. Nobody can help you unless you help yourselves. This is just my opinion. In my experiment with a different mindset I needed to buy a house and did not have the money. That I achieved this was a miracle. So yes I believe swithwords will work especially using it with visualization. Thank you for sharing such an interesting article. n

I think you should be in a reasonably positive state of mind, Hani, but it's not a prerequisite. I use them anytime I feel the need. Just try it x

Thank you for your kind words, Susie. If you feel 'build' has a certain strength or vibe, then it'll be a switchword for you.

Everything has a vibration, from rocks to elephants. It's particle physics :) Watch some Abraham-Hicks vids on YouTube - they talk about vibration and emotions all the time.

This is a great article. I found it when I was searching to see whether or not "build" is a switchword (I don't think it is :(

The comments about aloe vera caught my attention....I would definitely like to learn more about the theory of aloe vera plants having vibrational frequencies.....thank you!

Oh I love the universe too... and not just as a concept of a 'place', but of its potential to contain everything, all-that-is, and all that. It's like the god-force or something...

Aloes breeding like crazy on my bathroom windowsill :) Will read those hubs as soon as I can.

Thanks for stopping by and for you kind words. Together Divine x

Such an interesting article. I have never heard of switchwords before, but will certainly try them. I could embrace the vibrational frequency of words. One word I love is 'the universe,' Don't think it is a switchword but when meditating that word just feels like magic. I often read 'Rasta's' hubs on aloe avera. According to his aloe hubs, the aloe plant has vibrational frequencies and also protect from evil spirits.

Never heard of switch words before. They sound rather like magic. I must take a look at those books. Maybe there are also switchwords we use unconsciously that make us more stressed or harried than we were!

      Hi Bev,

That was really interesting, I never heard of Switchwords before. So it's the vibrational frequency of the words. That's really neat.
