The Subconscious Mind—What Does It Do?

The subconscious mind is sadly a mystery to the general population with the majority of people unable to explain just what it is that their subconscious actually does. When you consider that our subconscious mind is responsible for not only running our bodily functions as an engineer runs a ship but also performing multiple, simultaneous actions and maintaining habits, it is very surprising that more people aren’t aware of the power within their skulls.

Successfully utilizing the power of the subconscious mind is the key to living a successful life and I shall explain why I think this is so in the following paragraphs. Please join me on this journey to discover the power of the subconscious mind.

What Is Your Subconscious Mind?

Imagine a young farmer sitting in his newly acquired farmhouse, considering what best to plant for the coming planting season. He would most assuredly choose those vegetables that would bear him the most rewards, and once having done that he would then proceed to prepare the soil and make sure he had all the necessary resources available to him for the successful cultivation of his crops.

You are the farmer, your subconscious mind is your land, your fertile soil, and your thoughts are the seeds that will either grow into lush fields of vegetables or strangling, creeping and ugly weeds. That is the nature of the universe; everything starts as a seed, an idea which in time grows into a form, a form chosen beforehand by the creator, the evidence is all around you, no matter where you look. As the creator, you are responsible for controlling the subconscious mind, and when you do so you reap unlimited benefits.

Whatever we plant in our subconscious mind and nourish with repetition and emotion will one day become a reality.”

— Earl Nightingale

Subconscious Mind Facts

  • The Subconscious Mind makes up 88% of your brain's capacity.
  • The Subconscious Mind is unable to reason, therefore is unable to reject anything that it is told by you the 'conscious mind' in essence - so be careful what you think!
  • The Subconscious Mind has a perfect memory which means we only need search and have faith in its ability and we'll recall information easily.

Tips for Controlling the Subconscious Mind

Subjective Thoughts Are the Seeds

Although we know that thoughts have power and can become “things,” it is important to understand the difference between an objective thought and a subjective thought. An objective thought is a result of general thinking, such as reasoning, the process of recollection or study and there is no feeling involved, therefore it cannot enter or control the subconscious mind. A subjective thought, on the other hand, can enter the subconscious mind as long as it is impressed often and with sufficient feeling, which we often do quite easily when worrying over something. Affirmations infused with emotion would be one way of successfully tapping into the power of the subconscious mind if repeated on a daily basis with passion and vigor.

You have been sowing bad seeds in your unconscious; now you will sow good seeds. The power by which you have produced these ill effects will in the future produce equally good ones."

— Emile Coue

1. Observe Your Thoughts and Choose Which Shall be Admitted to the Subconscious Mind

With this in mind, learn to observe your thought processes and notice which thoughts are generating an emotional response within you. Stop negative thoughts as they appear and do not allow them to become subjective by giving them feeling, similarly, should you wish to sow positive thought seeds, imbue them with emotional content. Water them often, by repeating those thoughts over and over throughout the day and the subconscious mind will get to work bringing the means and resources to you, so that you may reap a grand harvest!

Dangerous Seeds That Turn the Power of the Subconscious Mind Against You

  • Revenge—I advise you not to dwell on thoughts of a vengeful nature for they will seep into your subconscious and turn you into a person who takes things personally.
  • Envy—You life will flounder and progress be limited when you program your subconscious mind to focus on what other people have.
  • Blame—These type of powerful thoughts tend to turn you into a person that shirks responsibility for your own life. Something goes wrong and you blame someone else, automatically if your subconscious mind has accepted this program.

2. Controlling the Subconscious Mind Through the Power of Substitution

This is a method of stopping discordant, weed-like thought seeds and replacing them with more suitable, positive and energetic thoughts that will sprout into whatever bountiful form you give them. You may be in the habit of thinking negatively and therefore find it difficult to stop a weed thought and replace it with a good thought, but never fear for there is one excellent way to control the subconscious, and the thoughts it is fed.

A mind that is filled with negative thoughts can just as easily become a mind that is filled with good thoughts, and this can be done by looking for the good in everyone and everything. Yes, it is difficult; controlling the subconscious mind through such a technique and that is why it helps to first practice seeing the other side of the coin for a week or so.

Keep a gratitude journal, go on a daily rampage of appreciation, walk the streets mentally praising everything you see for there is good in everything if you look closely enough. Doing that will bear you in good stead for the times when you wish to replace discordant thoughts with positive thoughts because your subconscious mind will already be well-versed in producing thoughts of a good kind. As a result, you will be able to easily control the subconscious and the harvest it produces for you.

Reap the bountiful harvest of your thoughts and tap into the power of the subconscious mind

Reap the bountiful harvest of your thoughts and tap into the power of the subconscious mind

3. For the Best Results, Impress Just One Desire Upon the Subconscious Mind at Any One Time

When you desire a thing or a circumstance, the best way of informing your subconscious mind is by repetition of the thought. You first plant the seeds of your desire, and then you water the seeds with constant repetition. This is the most effective way of controlling the subconscious mind, of preparing the soil so that your desire can quickly grow and blossom into full manifestation.

However, it is commonplace for a person’s mind to be filled with more than one want or desire and all this does is confuse the subconscious mind and kill the original seed that was planted. It is imperative then, that after you have planted a desire seed in the garden of your subconscious mind, that you water and feed only that seed until it sprouts and you are able to reap the harvest it produces.

Use affirmations, write your goal down on a card and read it daily, visualize its completion and rest assured, just as a farmer’s well-tended crop produces a plentiful harvest, your desire will manifest.

Controlling your subconscious mind is just a matter of focus, emotion and intent coupled with imagination. Those four are the difference between a barren wasteland of a subconscious mind or a blossoming, plentiful and abundant one.

Fear is a negative thought in your mind. Supplant it with a constructive thought. Fear has killed millions. Confidence is greater than fear. Nothing is more powerful than faith in God and the good."

— Joseph Murphy

Deeply insightful hub. The mind is powerful. Often we tend to work with the conscious mind, and forget all about the subconscious mind. The subconscious mind is a highly potent tool for creating a better life. Positive thinking and clear intentions about what we would like to create in life is a highly effective way to transform your life for the better. Especially since the subconscious mind makes up 88 percent of the mind, it is a most important aspect of the mind!

Alright my friend. I look forward to our next chat.

Take care.

anweshablogs on December 10, 2014:

Hi Rich

Nice to hear you back, I think what was making the difference in our opinion was the terminologies, while I am strictly following Freud, you might be following Pierre Janet. So I call it Unconscious while you call it subconscious.

And when we talk about philosophy...there cannot be any last word to anything...that's how philosophy stays alive.

So what you are saying has to have some point, which I was failing to see till now...but in last few days I was continuously thinking about it, and somehow I felt, that is where even my question lies...but until I get a first hand experience, experimenting on myself, I am unable to come to any conclusion.

I am going through your article once more, and would try it on myself...let's see what we arrive at.

Richard J ONeill (author) from Bangkok, Thailand on December 10, 2014:

Hey anweshablogs. I fear I haven't given you the time you so clearly deserve with the passion you show for this topic.

I agree. The subconscious mind surely does also work against us, our inner beliefs, the programs etc, from childhood, they are controlled by the subconscious mind.

I think the sixth sense or the hunch "can" be accurate if you learn to listen to it, but not many people can or do and so it often seems little more than a guess.

Okay anweshablogs, you have made a good point. The subconscious mind cannot be manipulated - but it can be coerced can it not?

anweshablogs on November 30, 2014:

Yeah Richard, I completely agree with you regarding the learning skills. But it(the unconscious mind) perhaps never "assist us, protect us, defend us and help us grow etc" as you said, rather you can say it does the other way round. It surely instigates us to achieve us what we want, but not in the right way always. Yes, the "gut" feeling I agree, is a result of the unconscious mind, which we call the "sixth sense", but that is very rarely accurate. Isn't it? Otherwise we would have been in such a good position.

What "assist us, protect us, defend us and help us grow etc" is our Ego, and the Super Ego. which actually save us from the impulsive actions prompted by the Unconscious mind which Freud named as "Id".

But in one sense I agree with you, that if we try we can access the unconscious mind by following some mental procedures, though we cannot "manipulate" it.

Richard J ONeill (author) from Bangkok, Thailand on November 30, 2014:

Hey Anweshablogs,

I know what you're saying. You are saying that the unconscious mind is a mechanism designed to assist us, protect us, defend us and help us grow etc.

But I think it goes both ways, in fact I'm certain it goes both ways.

Let's look at what the unconscious mind does:

It regulates our breathing, blood flow, every tiny, minute movement and calculation.

But think about this. When we are babies, we can't walk. We can't walk because we've never done it, it's completely new to us. We "consciously" practice it over and over until one day, the unconscious mind also "learns" and takes over from the conscious mind, meaning we no longer have to try.

The same applies to new skills. When you begin riding a bike, writing, swimming etc, so much concentration is required at first and you make so many mistakes BUT eventually you get it, the unconscious mind then takes over having learned from the conscious mind how it's done.

It's essentially an auto-pilot and all you need do is explain to it in which direction you'd like to go using clear and specific instructions and it does it obviously working hand in hand with you, the conscious creator.

If you want a Porsche, you can't simply tell your subconscious mind and expect it to appear. You think it, visualize it, feel desire for it, make plans of how you might get it and just as with bike riding, writing etc, your unconscious mind will take over and lead you to the resources you need in order to work towards attaining the desire. It isn't magic, it won't magically appear BUT your unconscious mind will steer you in the right direction by drawing your attention to the means and stimulating your brain with chemicals to encourage you to act on the "gut" instinct.

It's all a program just like the matrix.

Can you see what I mean by that?

anweshablogs on November 30, 2014:

Hi Richard,

As far as my understanding goes, Unconscious mind works only with unpleasant things, where the objects of desire cannot be achieved under any circumstances, mainly because of social reasons. When the conscious mind knows that, the desire goes into the unconscious. But a desire for a car is not likely to fall under that category, as the mind knows (consciously), that it isn't 'IMPOSSIBLE' to get it. So, that would be completely a conscious game of mind.

Please let me know if you think otherwise.

Richard J ONeill (author) from Bangkok, Thailand on November 30, 2014:

Hey anweshablogs,

Yes, I'm in complete agreement with you there. But there is something in that for us to learn, don't you think?

If our unconscious mind through unconscious remembrance activates our defense mechanism because of a memory, then it makes sense that our unconscious mind could also respond when a memory of something we love or desire is awakened through contact.

Therefore, if I desire strongly enough for a new car, a specific model, let's say a Porsche, wouldn't my unconscious mind then react when I see it, wouldn't it notify my brain and kick off a series of impulses, some adrenalin, some endorphin etc to encourage me to attain that desire? It does the opposite for fear so why not desire?

What do you think?

anweshablogs on November 30, 2014:

Hi Richawriter,

Actually I think it is almost like a paradox...whatever can be manipulated is conscious, yes we may deny that we know about it. Then that will fall under self-deception. What you are saying is closer to the concept of Pre-Conscious of Freud. But even there, things couldn't be manipulated, but yes, I think if we introspect and accept our "known" wishes, the volume of the unconscious may be reduced to some extent.

Regarding fear, all phobias emerge out of some unpleasant experiences which was someway or other related to that particular issue. The "fight or flight" is the reflex action definitely coming from the defense mechanism but it is due to the unconscious remembrance of some unpleasant experience...otherwise any child would be aware of the dangerous elements before hand, which doesn't happen.

What do you say?

Richard J ONeill (author) from Bangkok, Thailand on November 30, 2014:

Hey anweshablogs,

I agree that we can't directly manipulate the subconscious but we can feed it information so that it acts as it should, to do what's best for us. Don't you agree?

As Émile Coué suggested in the late nineteenth century with his auto-suggestion techniques, it is possible to program the subconscious mind through repetitious thoughts and the emotions attached to them. That is how "fear" is borne is it not? We visibly see something and realize from evidence that it is dangerous but before that, the fear wasn't there. The subconscious mind then takes that information and the emotion attached, and creates a defensive mechanism maybe by transferring it to the hypothalamus which is responsible for activating the "fight-or-flight" response.

Something like that anyway, haha.

anweshablogs on November 22, 2014:

I am working on this subject...what I understood till now, is you are indicating at what Freud named as Pre-conscious. The Unconscious isn't that easy to tap...and you cannot manipulate it consciously.

Marty Wilkinson from Elkton, Maryland on October 27, 2014:

Richard, the information that you are presenting is most interesting. I believe we benefit from freeing both our subconscious and conscious minds.

Thank you Che Rogers!

You are right. If we stay focused on our goals with wisdom and a positive mindset, we'll do okay.

We're surrounded by so much negativity though, that's the problem nowadays. It's as if we're being programmed to be negative.

Thanks for that valuable contribution.

Che Rogers from Los Angeles, CA on August 18, 2014:

Great article. Many don't know or understand the power their minds contain. How we are able to think things into existence so when we spend time thinking of negativity it's not a surprise that our life becomes full of negative things. We become what our mind dwells on. The key is to keep striving for wisdom and positive goals. This keeps your mind focused on what it was created for.

Richard J ONeill (author) from Bangkok, Thailand on August 15, 2014:

You hit the nail smack on the head my friend. They're all doing it, no matter the sector, each and every one of them is brainwashing us and manipulating us.

Why do you think they don't teach us such stuff in school?

Why do you think the Bible promises the weak and the timid that they will inherit the Earth?

Because it allows them to do with us as they please.

Good points my friend.

PMARTIN on August 14, 2014:

Hmmm. So I wonder then, advertisers, social activist leaders, politicians and (prosperity) preachers know this stuff and use our heightened emotions to get in to our subconscious mind? Sex sells so a sexy woman does the commercial. Past racial events are kept in the forefront to keep people sensitive. Life isn't fair vote for me. Suffering financially, sow a seed of $1000. Just wondering is all......

Truth4u on July 15, 2014:

The bible is the answer to changing the subconscious mind. Man cannot do it by themselves.

The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. The field is the world, and the good seed is the sons of the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one, and the enemy who sowed them is the devil. The HARVEST is the close of the age, and the reapers are angels. Just as the weeds are gathered and burned with fire, so will it be at the close of the age. The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all law-breakers, (Matthew 13:37-43)

sujeet on October 04, 2013:

good information

Richard J ONeill (author) from Bangkok, Thailand on July 19, 2013:

Hey Tony,

Your point is a good one. I guess I must go back and make a slight adjustment. I think you CAN plant many different seeds at once, but then there will just be less focus on each seed if you see what I mean.

Say for example if you wanted to plant CONFIDENCE, $50,000 IN THE BANK BY 2014, A SIX PACK AND A NEW CAR, then focusing on all of those at once, daily will actually lengthen the entire process and increase the time it takes your subconscious mind to nurture and grow those seeds into fruit or vegetables, if you see what I mean.

Perhaps if you stepped the goals and impressed them upon the subconscious mind one at at time, then the process might actually end up quicker as the focus is increased tenfold.

However, as with your point. You can impress multiple goals on the subconscious mind and therefore go for many at once, you would just need to be very disciplined in the thinking, visualizing and affirming area, say do each as a whole for at least an hour a day, perhaps 20 minutes in the morning, 20 in the afternoon and 20 before bed.

Thanks for your input. I do plant to review this hub and make changes and add more thanks to great people like yourself.

tony on July 15, 2013:

I believe it is wrong to say that we must only plant one seed at a time in the subconscious mind. A farmer can plant many different seeds in his soil and it will grow them all. The subconscious mind likewise will grow the different seeds you sow within it.

Richard J ONeill (author) from Bangkok, Thailand on May 20, 2013:

Hello Maghesen,

Yes, you are indeed right, my friend but sitting in front of one's computer does not equate to 'not making any effort'. On the contrary, a person might be sitting in front of their computer specifically 'because' they are making effort.

Another law of the subconscious mind is that we as individuals must ensure that we do not view and judge others, even ourselves for that matter.

People do what they do. It is their path and their life to lead and another individual living 'their' own life has no business examining and laying judgment upon that person if he perceives that person has stopped to rest or is gazing off into the distance.

If your comment is referring to yourself, then the answer is action, is it not?

Thanks for your thought provoking words as such words always carry much meaning and opportunity for contemplation.

Peace, my friend.

maghesen on May 20, 2013:

All these are ttue but it wont happen just by sitting in front of your computer and not making any effort! Am i right?????

Richard J ONeill (author) from Bangkok, Thailand on March 09, 2013:

Hey Renee,

This is NOT Joseph Murphy's material. In fact there have been thousands of books, all written on the topic of the subconscious mind, are they are all Joseph Murphy as well, because they wrote on the same topic?

I happen to be very interested in the subconscious mind and this hub was borne of that interest, and is a mixture of all the knowledge I have gained from wonderful explorers like Joseph Murphy.

There is nothing more despicable than people who plagiarize works and believe me, I am not one of them.

Please, read Joseph Murphy's books or books again because I assure you, not one word of this hub is copied from him. It's a similar topic, yes, but that doesn't mean it's his.

What is all literature written these days, but copied, regurgitated and rewritten information that has been passed on through the centuries to teach each new generation. We learn from books and materials we have gathered, materials and books that others have no access to and then we share it, and what's important about sharing it is that it is colored by our own thoughts, experiences and ideals, from our perspective.

Just because someone writes an article on the Mardi Gra in Brazil, obviously from news they have read, articles they have researched and stuff from the T.V. that doesn't mean they have copied anyone at all. It means they have processed the information and then in wishing to share their knowledge, written it into a more compact and summarized package.

I have read countless books on the subconscious mind, hundreds, in fact. Joseph is just one of many. If Joseph is one of many, then who is copying who?

You are wrong, although I won't delete your comment as you are welcome to an opinion and I challenge you to bring forth evidence that I have copied or plagiarized anyone. Go on, do it.

Thanks anyway for reading and commenting.

Hi Richawriter! I didn't understand these Principles until I made the effort to put them to work. I had visited Sedona, Arizona a few years ago, and this kept entering my mind so I worked with it. I looked at a map, communicated with residents of Sedona, looked at photos. Each day in my calendar, I wrote Sedona on the page. One day, I looked at my wants/needs list and saw that I should start shopping for a vehicle--and there it was: Sedona! My mind found a wonderful person with just the right vehicle. In one phone call and 3 hours later, I was behind the wheel. I hope I can be this mindful in my future. Thank you for some great, new Tools!

Hello, Dale. Thanks mate for that interesting comment!

Yes, the subconscious is a goldmine if we only find the right tools to drill it, it will bear more than gold and gems!

I hope your writing is going well mate. In fact, I'll be over very soon to have a look.

Peace mate. Keep up the good work.

Great hub, providing many pointers to apprehend & consider, especially 'focus, emotion and intent coupled with imagination.' One cannot go wrong.

Also, the reminder of only focusing, & nurturing just 'one' idea at a time otherwise the original seed will not flourish if overwhelmed with many other ideas.

Great hub well written I will be resorting back to this time & again. A vote up, thanks for sharing

Regards Dale

Hello, Dee42!

Thanks for the comment.

Hmm, Deju vu definitely sounds like a topic I would write about. Thanks for the idea as at some point this year I will write a hub all about Deja vu.

Take care, Dee42. :)

Dee42 from Beautiful Arkansas on April 09, 2012:

What an interesting hub! Now I need to go back and read MORE of your writing. Have you thought of writing a hub about Deja vu? I bet you would do wonders on THAT subject. Voted up :)

Richard J ONeill (author) from Bangkok, Thailand on June 23, 2011:

Thank you for that comment Dr.Ope. I appreciate you coming here, and I'm glad you were able to take something from this hub.

You are a Psychologist! I studied Psychotherapy and Child Psychology at College and I absolutely love the study of behaviour and the human mind. I'll get over to take a look at some of your work too because I'm sure your topics will interest me.

Thanks and again and take care Dr.Ope. :) Rich

Richawriter, very interesting and informative piece. I will be following your tips, as I am oftentimes overwhelmed by negative thoughts. I will be follwing you, so keep sharing.

Richard J ONeill (author) from Bangkok, Thailand on June 13, 2011:

Thanks for visiting, Tony. I appreciate your kind compliment. I'm glad you are learning about the mind as just as Buddha and all the wise Teachers preach, I believe that change comes from within, and is followed by the fruit of a newly fertilized mind.

Take care Tony. :) Rich

great breakdown on our personal 'thinking substance' (quote from Sience of getting rich). I'm learning about the different thoughts, and how to put emotion with the desired ones, going to read your hub on subjective thought

Richard J ONeill (author) from Bangkok, Thailand on April 22, 2011:

Thanks Alastar! Yes, I think that although all evidence in regards to consciousness is purely abstract and theoretical, we may well be able to tap into experience from past lives. Strange things have happened in my life, of which there is no scientific explanation and that is one of the reasons I believe so strongly in ... hmmm what do I call it? Perhaps a Godlike power or energy that is responsible for creation and is also what makes up our mind. The mind is more than just the meat that our brain is composed of, so in theory, we could say the mind is energy and is composed of all experience, memories etc.

Thanks for the support mate. I really appreciate it, although I must admit, "he" is exceptionally skilled at both writing and debating. Certainly somebody I will be keeping a close eye on.

I have also read some of your stuff and you too are an inspiration to me as your writing is also excellent and at a level I aspire to reach.

Keep up the good work!

Take care. Rich

An excellent breakdown on the sub-conscious. The hub lay-out is very good too. What if, the sub knew all stored knowledge from the collective unconscious say, from many previous lifetimes. If true, then if a person were to reach a level where they could handle access - it would be of great assistance. Even before such a level, if one could just be open to it - logically, it should never steer one wrong. I am in agreement with your reply to PWalker and..ahem..any thread you my have participated in today.

The Jet from The Bay on April 11, 2011:

Oh, it definitely did. You should check it out. It's amazing. Peace.

Richard J ONeill (author) from Bangkok, Thailand on April 08, 2011:

Hey Jet. I have heard Inception is a great movie, based on similar concepts to what I mentioned here right? I'll have to see it.

Thanks for the comment Jet. Hope to chat soon.

The Jet from The Bay on April 08, 2011:

This is gonna be hard, but thank goodness Inception will keep me inspired. Great hub!

Great, I look forward to hearing how well you do with that Patrice. Until then. Take care. Rich

PWalker281 on April 04, 2011:

Hey Rich, reading your hubs got me to thinking about who we are, and that analogy just popped into my head. I think the perception of ourselves as separate beings is a big illusion, that we are all One. At the quantum level, there is only energy which particularizes (i.e., becomes individualized) when consciousness focuses on or perceives something, creating the illusion of a separate "thing" being perceived by a separate perceiver (if that makes any sense).

Btw, I found Neville's 5 lessons on my computer; I'd saved them over a year ago. I remember reading them but, coming back to them a year later (with a lot of hard living in between), is helping me to actually apply them this time around. I'll let you know how it goes!

Richard J ONeill (author) from Bangkok, Thailand on April 04, 2011:

Wow, Patrice, I love that last post. Beautiful and definitely true. Perhaps the subconscious mind, inside the brain is somehow connected to everything through the mechanisms of the brain, the tool. Perhaps it is the only thing that makes us individual, and without it we would revert to being as one again. Kind of like we started as one being, or a collection of beings living as energy inhabiting the same space, unlike the bodies we use now which have their own private space.

We created machines or space suits but still retained our connection to the infinite through the subconscious mind which is the energy where we come from, and therefore it knows everything there is to know, and can supply us with whatever we need. (we are it, after all)

I'm really glad that I was able to make a little difference in your life Patrice and knowing that, will only make my own mission that much more energized.

The book really works, alongside the quotes and affirmations. You are going to have a lot of fun in the process.

Once again, thanks so much! Rich :)

PWalker281 on April 03, 2011:

If Infinite Mind is the womb, and physical manifestation is the baby, then the subconscious mind is the birth canal through which the Infinite achieves individuation. The Creator, the process of creation, and the creation are all One, indivisible.

PWalker281 on April 03, 2011:

Hi Richawriter, I am really enjoying reading your hubs. They are reminding me of what I need to do in order to turn some difficult circumstances around.

Your suggestion that we should focus on only one thing at a time is critical. I think that's one of the reasons I haven't achieved the results I want to manifest - I've been too scattered. I'm going to take some time over the next few days to decide on one thing to focus my attention on, create a vision book with affirmations, and find inspirational quotes to keep my vibration on the positive side of the spectrum. And have fun doing it!
