Do Shooting Stars Have the Power to Fulfill Wishes?

Updated on April 18, 2016

The Real Power of a Shooting Star

Can a shooting star really fulfill someone's wish? Is the whole idea just wishful thinking, or is there any real proof that wishing on stars works?

Quick answer: No, there isn't. I searched the Internet about experiences people have had wishing on stars. I found that this practice has been followed in many cultures, since ancient times, and that a shooting star is not a star at all—it is, in fact, a meteoroid. However, these facts didn't get me any closer to the truth, so I started reading about peoples' personal stories, which included:

  • One woman looking for love found it only two weeks after wishing on a shooting star!
  • Another person—who has close ties with NASA and who has seen more than his fair share of shooting stars—has wished on many stars, but none of his wishes have ever come true.
  • A mother whose family's financial troubles were magically resolved after wishing on a star.

I'm not equipped to say for sure if wishing on stars works or not. The majority of stories I've read about end without wishes being fulfilled, and of course, even if your wish does come true, there's no way to determine what made it happen.

But regardless of what we believe, it's probably a part of our human nature to secretly wish that shooting star-wishes might come true. So why not try? It doesn't cost a thing, and it's worth a shot!

Who Believes in Shooting Stars?

Here are some interesting facts about people throughout history who believed in luck from shooting stars.

  • Swabians (who lived in southwest Germany) believed that seeing a shooting star predicted one year of good luck. On the other hand, if a Swabian saw three in one night, that meant he was doomed to die.
  • After Greek astronomer Ptolemy's time (AD 127-151), there was a widely accepted and poetic explanation that when curious gods would peek down at earth, a star or two would slip down and become a shooting star. Thus, when you saw one, you knew that the gods were looking down at that very moment and so it was an excellent time to have your wishes heard by the gods.
  • In Chile, if you see a meteor you're supposed to immediately pick up a stone for luck.
  • In the Philippines, if you see a shooting star, for good luck you must tie a knot in a handkerchief before the meteor stops falling.
  • In Switzerland, a meteor was considered to possess the power of God.
  • In some Baltic countries and central Europe, people thought that each person had their own personal star which, when they died, died with them and fell from the sky. This is why it was common practice to say something like "rest in peace" or "go with God" if you saw a meteor.
  • When the Ensisheim meteorite fell in Alsace (now France) in 1492, the holy Roman emperor Maximillian assembled a council which decided that the event was a good omen for the wars with France and the Turks.

How to Wish on a Star

Here are various rules and customs for proper wish-making:

  • Close your eyes while you're wishing.
  • Repeat "Starlight, star bright, first star I see tonight: I wish I may, I wish I might, have this wish I wish tonight," and then make your wish.
  • You can't tell anyone what you wished, or else it won't come true.
  • You must believe in your wish, or else it won't be granted.
  • If you tie a knot in a handkerchief (or pick up a stone) before the meteor disappears, you'll have good luck.

What Disbelievers Say

Pragmatics: Why would anyone think that things like world peace, being successful, or finding true love depend on making the right wish at the right time? Who really thinks that a small space rock that's burning in the upper atmosphere has any effect on your life (unless of course it falls to earth and hits your house)?

Semantics: It's not a star (it's a meteor) and there's no shooting involved (it's falling). Do you really want to put all your hope on a falling rock?

Physics: If wishes and stars were connected, then presumably your wish must travel at the speed of light. The nearest star is 4.2 light years away. It would take 4.2 years for your wish to travel to that star and just as long for it to come back to you. That's eight and a half years for a wish!

How Can I See a Shooting Star?

Meteors fall all the time and can't be predicted. According to the American Meteor Society,

The number of random, or “sporadic” meteors that can be seen in the night sky is quite variable, depending upon such factors as the time of night, time of year, light pollution, and cloud conditions. Perhaps the most important factors necessary in order to observe meteors are to have a clear, unobstructed view, out in the open, and under as dark sky conditions as possible.

You might see more meteors just before sunrise. You may also see more in early fall (around September).

Of course, if there's a meteor shower, that's a great time to see a shooting star. For anyone who wants to see one, this calendar should come in handy: A Skywatching Guide to let you know what upcoming events to look for in the night sky, including meteor showers!

I had been sitting outside. I was looking up at the sky talking to my grandmother that had just past a few months ago and god. I then saw a shooting star and made a wish. I know it was also a sign of god and my grandmother talking back letting me know they were listening.

My friends always tell me about shooting stars, they really believe on it and they said that there wishes come true. But unlucky I've never seen a shooting star before. I really want to try and wish on it, until one night I was staring at the sky and i thinking if my eyes could catch just a one shooting star. Guess what?! YES. I just saw a shooting star then i close my eyes and make a wish. I wish to have a phone because my parents are really strict and they dont want me to buy a phone. But after a couple of months They Give Me A Phone! I really really really cant believe that it will come true.

I saw one shooting star in the month of February. I made a wish but didn't say the right words. I just imagined the wish in my head and said please 3 times out loud. I was all by myself outside so no one heard me. Except for duck, does that count as someone hearing you? I was looking derectly at the falling star (meteor). What will happen?

It MUST be true! If it's not true then I'm screwed. I put ALL my faith in it, so it MUST be true. I mean doesn't the article say that many cultures since ancient times have believed it? Would ancient people be stupid?

I mean MILLIONS of kids believe in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. They can't ALL be wrong, can they? I mean, maybe MOST of them but not ALL of them, can they?

Let me figure it this way. Maybe the chances of being right is only one in a million. But if 10 million believe in it, that means that TEN of them are right! And that's all it takes - if even ONE were right, then Santa MUST exist, and shooting stars MUST grant wishes, and ... and ... and ... Have fun.

My friends and I saw a shooting star (meteorite) at about 3 AM one night as we were walking down the street. The sky was a firely blue and red around it. The sight was so grand that I wished to see another one. Soon after, another one came through the atmosphere. My friend wished for an xbox 360 controller on the second meteorite we saw. When we got near his house we found a black controller. Coincidence? Maybe, but I like to believe that it wasn't.

While I was sitting on the bench outside my house in my village seeing the open sky at midnight I saw a shooting star which was travelling with a great speed and with bright shine which was pinkish yellow.

I was very much surprised to see it as I saw it first time . But it was my bad luck that I couldn't wish anything. But I wish I could see it next time.

I want to make a real wish to a real shooting star so it can really come true but you can't tell anybody because if you tell somebody your wish it won't come true at all so you got to keep yours a secret I'm keeping mine a secret and I got to wish out loud or quiet and you got to wish really hard and it'll definetly come true you got to close your eyes and dream and wish hard then it'll come true or you can just throw a coin in a fountain or a wishing well but you got to make your wish first before you throw your coin in them or something

I just seen my second shooting star. I wished and i mean who doesn't want their wish to come true! I was probably 15 yrs old when i seen my first one and i wished i didn't have anything wrong with my heart. They doctor planned the surgery and everything. Well a week after the doctor with the second opinion told me i didn't have to get the surgery and its not around the bundle of hiss...

About two weeks after i scheduled my heart ablation anyways. I did it to be safe. And it was near and could have been deadly.

I do think they come true. It depends on your wish. God is the one who truly knows. Believe in him and all your wishes will come true!

Bottom line. I wished and it came true. For a since of relief. And i got it done anyways.

I heard him mumble some words so I ask him what did you say he said I seen a shooting star so for as long as the star is burning if you say money, money as fast as you can some day you'll get rich . later he was a pioneer in a new start up business in a few short years he sold the business for 20 million + USD. I am sold on the idea it worked for him. BUT YOU HAVE TO BELIEVE Read the bible

Thanks for anwering the request stainluss.Meteoroids, while passing through the Earth's atmosphere get heated up leaving a glowing streak of light which we call as shooting stars. You are right about the science part of your research and also for saying "we wouldn't be human if we didn't wish on one when we saw it".I don't personally believe in such things and have often confused these shooting stars with other things happening out there in space.I would certainly like my wishes to come true someday I see a shooting star. Thanks again.
