What Is Intuition?

Intuition is not a "New Age" thing, it is a gift that everyone has. Unfortunately, some of us choose to open the gift incompletely or not at all. We are all born with this ability and use it every day whether we realize it or not. It's a natural knowledge about how to solve a problem or what needs to be done. Doctors and nurses are some of the most intuitive people. We have all heard or read stories about a nurse who intuitively knew what was wrong with a patient and saved a life when none of the tests were shedding a light on what was wrong.

Exercising your intuition and tuning into your inner wisdom will give you a more positive and happy life. All of the answers to our trials and tribulations are actually right there for us if we just learn to listen. The more that we work with our intuition, the quicker and easier it will be to recognize when the timing is right or when something is just not quite right.

Learn to let your intuition or gut instinct tell you when the food, the relationship, or the job isn't good for you and conversely when what you are doing is just right.

— Oprah Winfrey

1. Meditation

Meditation is good for more than strengthening intuition but it is the most powerful way to open up your intuition. Meditation doesn't have to be a big spiritual ritual. Just quieting your mind to start with.

Use your breath to keep you focused from the busy thoughts about what you forgot at the grocery store or an important phone call that you need to make at work tomorrow. When a thought flutters in about a task that you need to get done, acknowledge it and let it go. Don't sit there and build on the thought, just let it flutter away as easily as it came to you.

If you are new to meditation, take it slowly in the beginning. Sit quietly with nothing on in the background for about 5 or 10 minutes. Just sit there quietly. If you hear an outside noise that distracts you, acknowledge that it is going on but don't dwell on it. Just dismiss it. As you get more comfortable with doing this, you can do it longer. Doing small little quiet meditations through out the day actually gives you an energy boost. Slow down and listen to your breath for a couple of minutes.

Meditation helps build intuition by teaching the skill of quieting the mind. It opens up the third eye chakra which is a direct path to our intuition. Over time, you can start to meditate with a purpose. You can meditate with a subject or question in mind and listen for an answer or a feeling.

Relax into Wellness, Guided Meditations for Healing Mind, Body and Heart

This is an excellent collection for both beginner and advanced meditation. It has guided meditations and will help you get to that next level in meditation. The music is beautiful. The guided imagery will help you with symbolic meditation. I have used this when I am looking for an answer to a question or a solution to a problem. Work with these meditations often and increase your ability to tap into your intuition.

2. Be Creative

Doing something creative uses the feminine side of the brain which is associated with intuition. Doing a creative activity puts you in "the zone". You are focused on what it is that you are doing and busy thoughts don't have time to pop into your mind quite as much. Doing a creative activity is healthy for our brains, body and soul.

If you don't think that you are particularly creative, get some coloring books. There are books that have images to color which strengthens intuition. Color for about 15 minutes before bed and it can help your sleep to be more restful. And could help you to have intuitive dreams.

3. Keep a Journal

Put a notebook or a journal next to your bed. Write down the first thing that you think of when you wake up. When we first wake up, we are still in a different more open state and our thoughts are very intuitive.

Write down your dream if you had one. Write everything down that comes to your mind about it. It doesn't matter how insignificant or silly that it seems. Note how you were feeling and if you smelled anything in your dream. The colors or any symbols. What someone said to you and how they said it, (telepathic or vocal).

4. Dance

Dancing raises our vibrations and is great exercise for the body. It's hard to be unhappy or think about mundane things when you are dancing a jig. Be creative and change up your moves to activate the creative side of your brain. Get into the beat of the music and really feel it. If you feel self conscious about not being able to dance, do it alone at home. Turn on your favorite peppy music or some spiritual drum music and have fun with it. Dance with your dog or your cat.

Dancing makes you get into and stay in the moment. Being able to forget the past along with the future and just be in the present is the easiest way to tap into intuition.

5. Test Your Intuition

Play a game with your intuition. Focus on something and try to predict what is going to happen short term. Think about a co-worker and predict what color they are going to wear that day. See how many times that you are correct. Don't get discouraged if you are wrong most of the time at first. It will start to get correct more and more as you become more in tuned with how your intuition works. It could be a feeling or a kind of picture in your mind.

Playing a game with your intuition will build your trust. Trust is the most important when you are working on your intuitive skills. If you are getting strong feelings but second guess them, then all of your work goes to waste.

Meditation, actually I never try it before. But base on the information you have right now I think there's no problem with it and I think this is good when it comes to relaxing from stress.

Thanks Gustavo Woltmann. It is excellent to relieve stress. I work in retail in my day job and do mini meditations all day long. See what works for you, these were just suggestions. Find what works for you, play with it. If getting out in nature and listening to the sounds work for you then do that. Good luck and I hope that you have a fabulous New Year.

Great article, Allisyn. I wonder if you want to do a second, similar, article: What not to do in order to enhance your intuition. Also, do you think intuition is a synonym for being psychic? Thanks for writing and keep up the good work!

Thanks. Wow that's a great idea! Yes I do think that psychic abilities have a connection to intuition.
