Every Mirror Can Do Mirror Magic
What Happened to Living Your Own Life?
These days, life hurts! Many of us feel damaged in body and soul by world events and what has happened to ourselves and those we care about.
If self-care remedies of exercise or mindfulness haven’t soothed you or their effects did not last, try “mirror magic.” Simple and free, it is among the oldest magical techniques and can transform your mood and outlook in minutes.
You’ve heard of mirrors as gateways to other worlds, and as tools for scrying (“Mirror, mirror, on the wall”) or seeing into the beyond. This more basic "mirror magic" technique increases your confidence and restores your self-belief so you can live your life.
Any mirror can be a magic mirror. Choose one you own and use often, and let's begin.
Mirrors Have Powers; That's Why We Avoid Them
Places such as convents had no mirrors, saying it was wrong to dwell on the self. We devalue as “vain” the people who "preen" in front of mirrors. We are taught that our physical self is only a carrying-case for our souls, and about Narcissus who fell in love with his own image and came to a bad end. Yet the great Palace at Versailles had a hall of mirrors in which royals and nobles could admire themselves and get richer and more commanding.
Unquestionably, mirrors have power, and there’s a reason you’ll react as follows when you first try mirror magic.
1. Find a mirror of any kind. Dust the chosen mirror and clean it. This clears it of previous energies. It is going to become a healing tool. Then sit and look into it.
2. What will you see in the mirror? Yourself, of course.
You will certainly react as follows: Oh, no! How awful! The stress of the past few years is showing. The nose, ugh! And the weight, and the aging, and the pores!
Stifle the impulse to look away. Stay with the mirror three to five minutes. It will patiently wait through that phase.
Step 3: A Special Person Appears In the Room
You were doing nothing more than looking into a piece of glass. What, then, triggered that emotional recoil? Stay with the mirror and feel your feelings without judging yourself.
Most of us don’t want to be familiar with ourselves. We cringe on Zoom or choose to hide our faces (“That’s what I look like?”) or refuse to be in photos. Gyms and fitting rooms have been removing their mirrors because people can't stand the sight -- of their selves! -- not aware that mirrors can increase your confidence and stabilize troubled moods.

3. Stay with your mirror three to five minutes, until the storm of self-criticism passes, because it will. If you can’t bear looking at your face straight on, look around the mirror’s edges for a while and steal a few glances at your full reflection.
Mirror magic is for reclaiming the only self you have, source of your life, love, intelligence, and power. Authorities tell us power resides outside of us, that only God has power, or a doctor, or the Universe, or that money is power. True, but not the whole truth. To keep us from recognizing our own power we were taught "don't look in mirrors" or to hate our selves if we do.
Gaze full-on at the unique being the mirror reflects, at the divinely created gift of your being. It will become as mesmerizing as gazing into a lover's face. Soon your impulse will be to sit or stand a little straighter, as if an important person has entered the room.
It will become as mesmerizing as gazing into a lover's face.
To Live an Inspired Life, First Accept Your Own Being
Steps 5 and 6: You Can't Do This Wrong
5. Keep gazing, lingering, and summoning tolerance, compassion, or love for the geography of your face and body: your being. It’s unique. It is the sum of your life story. Chat with this being in the mirror. In what ways has it supported you rather than disappointed you?
6. By now, is your reflection somewhat okay, or at least forgivable or understandable?
Some mirror-magic instructions ask you to say aloud and repeat to the mirror, “I love you.” But if that feels phony or corny, stay with the very first goal of mirror magic: to actually see and accept your being.
Continue to gaze, and you might see in your face the features of your ancestors. They hoped that one day there would be a person just like you. How proud they are that you are here. They love you. Some mirror-magic practitioners advise touching the mirror, or mapping out on it the sections of the face. It’s not required. You can’t do this wrong.
It is said that advanced mirror-gazers can see into the beyond. Avoid right now making mirror magic into a job with goals and a timetable.
Tons of Makeup Will Never Help
Dare to See Yourself As You Are
The solutions most often given for healing from stress and trauma are for our inner selves: meditate, stop doom-scrolling, take a walk out in nature. Solutions commonly prescribed for the health of our physical beings – relaxation, exercise, hand-washing, avoiding crowds, avoiding gluten or sugar – have as their secondary message that our beings will always give us endless problems or pain. That is not true. Divine forces created us from the same material as the stars. Clearly we are meant to value every bit of ourselves every moment we survive. And in your mirror is a survivor.
Dare to look at yourself in a mirror. It’s a rich source of healing, hiding in plain sight.
