Six Strange Superstitions Involving Animals

I am an author and paranormal enthusiast who has published numerous books and articles on the subject of true unexplained phenomena.

Snakes are symbols of both good fortune and bad in the world of superstitions.

Snakes are symbols of both good fortune and bad in the world of superstitions.

1. Snakes

The snake's rather dubious beginnings can be traced back to the Garden of Eden where one of their ilk supposedly tricked Eve into taking a bite from the forbidden apple. Ever since that monumental moment, it has been assumed that these reptiles are on the devil's payroll. The fact that they tend to reside underground only adds to the belief that they are agents of the dark side.

According to lore, snakes travel back and forth between the Earth and Hell at will. With this in mind, it is believed that, as a reward for being the netherworld's most favored children, they have been given the ability to cause decomposition in the living.

This power is said to manifest in the necrosis that often occurs in the aftermath of a bite from a venomous snake. The rotting tissue at the site of the wound is likened by some to the breakdown of flesh that takes place after death.

Putting their questionable reputation aside, superstitions regarding snakes are not all bad. For instance, it is thought that to stumble upon a white snake in the wild suggests that you are a pure soul who is destined to lead a blessed life.

If the distinctive reptile remains perfectly still during the encounter, your future is on the right track. If, however, it slithers off the path, destined for parts unknown, this is a sign that you would do well to alter the course you have been following if you wish to see your dreams come to fruition.

2. Goats

Goats have the unfortunate distinction of being considered by some to be physical representations of the devil, mostly due to their historical depictions in literature and on film. As a result, these strong-willed creatures are fabled to not only attract evil, but to feed off of it with great abandon.

Conversely, just as these animals are believed to court malevolence, so too are they reputed to act as buffers against the very thing on which they thrive. It is said that if a goat walks ahead of you, they will swallow any negative energy in your path.

Since they fearlessly consume the horrid entities that dwell in the darkness at every opportunity, a goat has no problem assuming the role of guardian when the need arises. With it leading the way, the human soul it ushers emerges unscathed from the ordeal, never knowing that they escaped the grasp of evil thanks to their cloven-hoofed protector.

3. Pink Dolphins

Every now and then, news outlets will feature stories detailing sightings of pink dolphins in the world's oceans. These marine mammals, while magnificent to be sure, have a special place in the world of animal lore. Owing in part to their unusual appearance, these creatures have gained fame for their purported connections to another mystical sea denizen: the mermaid.

As legend has it, pink dolphins were human at one time. Banished to the water for reasons only they would know, they dwell in the ocean during the day. At nightfall, these anomalies emerge from the depths in human form and make their way toward land.

Once there, they are said to roam local villages in search of children to take with them when they return to their undersea homes. What becomes of those they abduct is a mystery. Perhaps they too transition into lifeforms that exist in the water by day, and on land when the moon lights the night sky.

Rats are believed to sense danger in advance and act accordingly.

4. Rats

Let's face it, the lowly rat has a bad reputation that it probably doesn't deserve. Yes, they can spread disease and aren't the cutest creatures ever created, but they have their good points. Intelligent beyond their station, rats are believed to possess an innate sixth sense that allows them to see impending doom long before humans, and other species of higher standing, realize that anything is wrong.

Witnessing a colony of rats running away in unison signals that they are fleeing from a threat that will bring devastation to all living things in its path. If you ever find yourself in this situation, unlikely though it may be, you'd be wise to head for higher ground. It can be assumed that the rats, whether you're a fan of theirs or not, are leading the way to safety.

5. Fish

If you enjoy fishing and hope to take home a sizable bounty, be sure to throw back the first catch of the day. This act of respect is said to be smiled upon by the keepers of the water, who will then reward you with a plentiful supply of fish. From then on, having gained their trust, the lords of the hydrosphere will generously provide for you in perpetuity.

6. Rabbits

If you think that the clover-nibbling rabbit couldn't possibly have a place on the dark side of superstitions, think again. According to lore, a rabbit that appears on a forest path with an apparent injury is not always what it seems.

Rather than being in need of help, it is believed that the animal is actually a nefarious witch in disguise. The pathetic ruse, as it happens, is simply her way of luring travelers deeper into the woods. Her true identity is only revealed when the intended victims reach her lair and realize, too late, that they have been duped. Finding themselves in a situation from which there is no escape, the Good Samaritans are never seen or heard from again.

By the same token, unclean spirits are said to take a page from the book of witches by assuming the guise of rabbits in order to infiltrate homes. After taking on the role of family pet, these fiendish entities proceed to manipulate those around them, effectively ending life as they knew it. When the world around them crumbles, the hapless victims never suspect that their downfall was orchestrated by their lop-eared companion.

On a lighter note, animal lore isn't always foreboding. For example, to cross paths with an exceedingly fat rabbit is Mother Nature's way of giving you a heads-up that you'd better stockpile firewood; a long, cold winter is right around the corner.
