The Knight of Cups card is sometimes referred to as the Prince Charming card. All suited face cards have an additional element to them, which are:
- Page = Earth
- Knight = Fire
- Queen = Water
- King = Air
This means the Knight of Cups is based in the element of water and guided by fire. And what does fire do when it gets hot? It boils. It gets steamy. It's soothing. It's what you want in a shower. It's the whole point behind hot tubs.
Prince Charming is the perfect blend of physical attractiveness and emotional charisma, and he attracts good people to him. He has excellent manners, exudes confidence, and seems like someone who could only exist in a Disney movie or soap opera.
This is a person who for most seems unobtainable. Everyone wants to be with someone who is good-looking and kind. He's a dreamboat and the perfect eye candy.
This card is particularly important in romance readings. Consider it a yes, this love-interest is awesome if in the upright position. If the card is in the reversed position, then not everything is as it seems—you may be flirting up a storm with someone who is ill-matched for you.
Creativity, romance, dreams, passion, flirting, charm, idyllic, cutesy, charisma, good manners, emotional intelligence, irresistible, imagination, amicable, attractive, beauty.
Jealously, unrealistic, moody, pompous, too critical, haughty, grandiose, intoxicating, trickery, betrayal, smarmy, questionable, irreverent, ghosted, dramatic, handsome but deadly.
The Knight of Cups indicates opportunities, invitations, and offers. Knights are bringers of ideas. A person represented by this card needs constant excitement, has a noticeably artistic side, and is refined. He likes the finer things of life and is a person you would take to museums, symphonies, botanical gardens, and castle tours.
The Knight of Cups represents someone who is friendly, intelligent, and has very high expectations. A dreamer like this can be easily persuaded or discouraged, and his emotions have big swings.
In the reversed position, the Knight of Cups is unreliable. This person offers false promises and tricks. He is reckless in love and in other areas of his life. You shouldn't trust this person, but it's hard because they really do have intoxicating charms. He knows how to reel you in.
You'll never know where the truth begins and ends with this person. You'll have plenty of rosy memories, but they'll be squashed together with the most awful and bitter moments of your life. He invites you into a torturous relationship.
Prince Charming rides a white horse. He holds a golden goblet, which bears a message from the heart. He wears a cloak with images of fish—the symbol of water and the symbol for Pisces.
The fish indicates he is conscientious and creative. He is in tune with his spirit; therefore, he seeks wisdom. This is a man who desires to be with someone like-minded. His helmet and boots are winged, like Hermes from Greek Mythology.
Hermes was a messenger god who could travel back and forth from Mount Olympus to Earth. He could dine with gods or mortals. The myth of Hermes makes sense for the Knight of Cups. The Knight cards are considered messengers, like the Pages. The Knight of Cups is also caught between two elements—fire and water.
The man's helmet and boots also showcase his wealth and desire for extravagance. He puts a lot of effort into his looks. He also wants to display that he is creative and has an appreciation for beautiful things.
The horse in the picture isn't charging forward but moving slowly and gracefully. It's more of a trot. The horse is calm and composed, representing power, strength, courage, and free-will. It is white, representing purity, spirituality, and integrity.
The background is mostly empty save for a few trees and a river. All rivers in Tarot have to do with emotional flow and connecting the conscious with the subconscious. The suit of cups' main purpose is to focus on the subconscious and imagination in order to have a better relationship with oneself.

Upright Knight of Cups
The Knight of Cups represents a person's ideal love interest. This is a positive card overall. It's good to know what kind of person you want as a partner. You'll be spending a lot of time with them, so it's important to really consider what qualities mesh with you.
This person meets all your ideal criteria. You're attracted to the way they look and like the way they think. You're over the moon with how they express themselves emotionally. It's really easy to get lost in your thoughts over this person.
If you're looking at this card in a reading, it's really important to see what other cards are around it. Does the Knight of Cups have other positive cards around it, or is it blocked by unfortunate circumstances?
You may really like someone but the circumstances aren't right. Perhaps the two of you are going in different directions, are in different social groups, or don't have enough core similarities to reach each other. The Knight of Cups can appear in a reading and have to do with unrequited love; the best way to tell if that's the case is to look at the other cards. If you have intuition, you can look at a person and see if the right variables are there or not.
The Knight of Cups is compassionate. This is someone who puts effort into caring for others. They make for natural servants even though they're princely. They want others to feel loved. They're a bright shining example of the golden rule: do to others as you would have done to you.
The following good manners could signify a Knight of Cups:
- Opens doors for you without asking
- Asks if you want anything from the kitchen while they're up
- Reaches for the check without prompting
- Cleans up after himself in the bathroom
- Has excellent greetings and salutations
- Gives eye contact and isn't constantly distracted by his cell phone
- Sends gifts at appropriate times
- Arrives on time
- Shows gratitude
- Eats and sleeps on a normal schedule
- Asks about your day
The Knight of Cups will express himself artistically. You might catch him writing romantic poetry, painting beautiful landscapes, or practicing a song. He wants to serenade you and sweep you off your feet. He wants to fall madly, deeply in love. The Knight of Cups prioritizes love, and a romantic relationship is one of his top concerns.
This Prince Charming character is ideal; however, be warned. If you don't have the energy to invest in this kind of magnetic relationship, you probably won't be able to maintain it. The Knight of Cups demands a lot of attention and stimulation. They're looking for a unified relationship, not one with a lot of space. He will demand a lot of your time, but if he is a good fit for you then this will be fantastic.
Side note: water signs in astrology put a lot of emphasis on merging. They want an intensely passionate relationship that goes deeply down into emotions. They can be prone to codependency. Cancer and Pisces are known as martyrs. Scorpio is known for intensity.
High Emotional Intelligence
When Prince Charming walks into the room, he brings a certain light with him. Everything he does is fascinating. You'll notice the oddest things about him like the way his shoulders move when he opens the fridge. You might get lost while looking at his back or drunk on his arm muscles. Being in love with a dreamboat like this is like constantly consuming chocolate or wine. You can't really get enough of it.
He shares his love freely, so he needs to be with someone vulnerable. He won't stand for a guarded partner. He believes in expression and composure. He is judging you for how you display your emotions; he makes mental notes about whether you seem composed or dramatic.
Not everyone will be attractive to him. He has high standards. He pursues perfection. He knows perfection doesn't exist, but he desires a fancy soul mate.
If the Knight of Cups represents you, it indicates that you're open to creativity and inspired by beautiful things. You have a good relationship with yourself. Essentially, the Nine of Cups and higher in the suit indicate that you have a good relationship with yourself, and you're doing what you can to sustain that.
The Knight of Cups indicates that you're moving forward with your dreams, and you're content about it. You want your dreams to be reality. These dreams often have to do with creative pursuits, art projects, colorful schemes, and brilliant works.
Be open to exploring your passions. Your hobbies could serve as passive income for you, the most ideal income. Your imagination feeds your actions. Use your dreams to support you and bring your life in alignment with your highest wisdom.
All of the Knight cards are on a mission. This particular Knight is focused on: romance, altruism, compassion, and beauty. The Knight of Cups wants unity in the world. He leads with his heart. He desires world peace. He is quite clearly the utopian among us.
Lead with your emotions and heart. Look to those around you before you speak or act. You need to consider people's feelings. Your intuition guides you in everything you do, so listen to it.
When you're out of tune with your intuition, you won't be able to make heads or tails of your life. You'll be directionless.
Disagreeable for Some
Fair warning: the Knight of Cups might be too cloying of a partner for some people. Not everyone wants to date an idealist. His high expectations for art, fashion, humanitarian efforts, music, and food can be a lot to handle.
His constant need for excitement can be draining for his partner. There are people who would die for someone like the Knight of Cups, and others who would find a relationship with him to be a nightmare.
A good deal of his actions might not appear sustainable. Some might worry he is too expensive and too risky for their tastes.
Reversed Knight of Cups
Handsome but deadly, this guy has looks that could kill. He's awful and full of himself. He can get away with almost anything because he looks so good, and he uses his good manners as a defense mechanism.
Call it the Dorian Gray complex. He could capture anyone's gaze, but he has a million different vices, not to mention his soul is trapped in a painting. . .
The Reversed Knight of Cups isn't someone you want to deal with. You don't want to get caught up in their schemes. This is someone who thinks that they can get away with anything. They're attracted to crime, take big risks, and are not afraid of death.
In a personal reading, this card could indicate that you're dreaming of a project that is not coming to fruition. You're not taking the right actions to make your dreams come true, and your head is up in the clouds.
Dreaming is important, but you also need to be disciplined. Stay organized and create plans. Actually put some action into the world. You can't be a writer if you dream about writing all the time but never put down any words. You'll never grow if you don't exercise your talents.
Tricks often play off dreams. You want something really bad, but you don't have the discernment to tell whether it's actually good for you. You may have trouble sustaining happiness. You need to figure out a way to get back into reality. You're essentially standing in a dimension outside of reality. You live too much in fantasy.
You should take the lessons of your fantasies and turn them into something productive. You can't stay in your subconscious all the time. You need to marry it with your conscious. In doing so, you'll have a better relationship with yourself.
You need to be reasonable about your ideas. You should take time to plan and meditate before jumping into something and trying to figure your way out merely through instinct. Here are some ideas to get yourself on a more intentional path:
- Stick to a budget. Don't just buy whatever you see.
- Write outlines for projects.
- Create pros and cons lists.
- Use Excel and other spreadsheet software.
- Prioritize your responsibilities.
- Create checklists.
- Get into the real world: tidy up your surroundings.
- Let go of objects that no longer serve you. Cull your supplies back. Hoarding will distract you and muddle up the flow of your home.
The Dark Side
The Knight of Cups can also indicate jealously and that you want something you can't have. You might be coveting someone's wife! You wish you looked more beautiful, you wish you had that random person's success, and you wish you were the King of the Universe.
You need to stop comparing yourself to others. Constantly looking at what other people have will cause you to be bitter. Show gratitude for what you do have. Focus on your own lot. Take a break from social media; instead, tune back into yourself and your family and close friends.
Social media causes disillusionment. Everyone is portraying themselves in a certain way and making announcements. You don't necessarily see the hard work it took for people to arrive at their dreams. You also might find people's wallowing and sorrows bring you down. It's addictive to keep a watch on all your digital friends. It can also waste your time.
The Knight of Cups indicates moodiness and making brash decisions. This is someone who makes for a terrible date. It's also not how you want to portray yourself. You want to be composed. You want to show wisdom in your decision making. Resist the temptation to fall for the tricks of the Reversed Knight of Cups.
He might look lovely, he might drive a nice car, and he might be loved by his community. You need to drop him if you see through his act. If you know it's an illusion then cut ties with him. He's not going to change. Stop it with the false hope.
Some people are only good on the surface. They're great at fabricating appearances, but underneath they have no altruism.
