What Is Numerology?

Numerology is the practice of understanding the metaphysical meanings of numbers. Various forms of this ancient practice have been around throughout recorded history. It exists in almost every holy book ever written. The Bible, for example features many symbolic numbers. The number 40 is considered a number of wholeness and completion. You'll find this specific number referenced more than 130 times throughout both testaments. Some examples, Jesus spent 40 days in the Desert, the great flood lasted for 40 days and 40 nights and so forth. This is of course one of many symbolic numbers referenced in Biblical texts.

People have always been fascinated by numbers and associated them with different non-numeric meanings. The modern numerology most commonly used today in the west is Pythagorean numerology, which has its roots in ancient Greece (500 BC). Today, the concepts are still being expanded upon.

According to modern numerology, your name and date of birth can tell a lot about you including your natural strengths and weakness, your soul's destiny and even hidden talents.

For this article, I am going to show you how to calculate two of the more important name numbers - the Destiny Number and the Soul Urge.

So, are you ready to learn more about what your name has to say about you? Let's get started...

First Things First

First, we need to assign every letter of your name a numeric value. We do this by using the handy chart below. Write your full birth name across a sheet of paper. Beneath each letter write the corresponding number that goes with it.

The Pythagorean Numerology Chart

For my example, I will use a name we all know and recognize.

Name numerology for President Barack Obama
Name numerology for President Barack Obama | Source

First we add up the numbers of the first name: 2 + 1 + 9 + 1 + 3 + 2 = 18

Next we want to reduce down to a single digit: 1 + 8 = 9

Next we do the middle name: 8 + 3 + 1 + 1 + 5 + 9 + 5 = 32

then reduce: 3 + 2 = 5

Finally, the last name: 6 + 2 + 1 + 4 + 1 = 14

reduce again: 1 + 4 = 5

To get the number of the full name we add the 3 previous results 9 + 5 + 5 = 19

reduce 1 +9 = 10 and reduce again 1 + 0 = 1.

**The only time you don't reduce to a single digit in Numerology is when the result is a Master Number of 11, 22, or 33. **

Destiny Number

So, now we have our chart and have added up the full name. The full name gives us the Destiny aka the Expression number. This number describes the qualities inherent within you, what you are born with as a natural inclination that you can work to build upon. All numbers have positive traits, but when they are improperly balanced, they can also take on negative connotations. In that case, it would be important for each person to build up the positives and work to overcome any challenges represented.

So what does your destiny number say about you? Below is a very brief synopsis of the numbers and their base characteristics.

Soul Urge / Heart's Desire Number

Next we'll look at the Soul Urge aka the Heart's Desire number. This number's purpose is to show the authentic self, the true you that lies beneath your outward personality. It is a testament to the deeper individual.

This number is calculated using only the vowels of your full birth name.

So, using our example again we would go through each name adding up only the vowels.

  • For Barack we use only the two A's: 1 + 1 = 2
  • Hussein (UEI) 3 + 5 + 9 = 17 and we reduce: 1 + 7 = 8
  • Obama (OAA) 6 + 1 + 1 = 8
  • Next we add them up 2 + 8 + 8 = 18 and then reduce: 1 + 8 = 9

For our example the Soul Urge is a 9.

Like Hawaiianodysseus I was wondering the same thing. I got 5 for both. The soul urge seems more accurate than the destiny number but then again my name was changed as a child so that might have thrown off some of the numbers. Anyway enough about me! This was fun and again another great hub!

This is so interesting. After I was married, I paid and legally changed my name from Carla to Carly. So I went from an 8 to a 5. It was interesting to read the difference of the two numbers, they both seem similar but I am more of a 5 now. Thanks for the fascinating hub.

I have heard of numerology but never knew how it worked. This is an interesting and informative hub. I enjoyed doing this with my name. Quite interesting. Like astrology, though, I do have a bit of skepticism.

I enjoyed reading this and it was so engaging.

Having more than one of the same number can indeed carry more significance. There are many numbers to consider, but yes, if you have a certain number that comes into play a lot the general meaning of that number would be a dominant characteristic for you. In Numerology the six is considered the number of one who is called to serve others. They tend to work in service fields (teachers, nurses, police etc) and they also have very strong family/domestic energies. Six people are exceptionally generous and love to feel that they are needed by others because they tend to base a lot of their sense of personal value on what they do for those around them.

Do the two types of numbers have any relation to each other? For example, I got a 6 for the Destiny Number and a 6 for the Soul Urge. Does having the same number have any significance? Thanks for sharing, Christin!

Aloha, and have a nice weekend!
