What Do Floating Dreams Mean?
In general, floating dreams are positive in nature—they usually symbolize independence, freedom, acceptance, happiness, satisfaction, and success. Dreaming that we are floating is a common experience for both men and women.
Floating dreams have many variations. Common scenarios include floating in the air, over your bed, over water, or into space, among many other possibilities.
In this article, we will discuss many of these scenarios, as well as their possible meanings. In the end, we hope that we are able to guide you in your attempt to figure out what these dreams represent in your waking life.
Are floating dreams and flying dreams different?
There is an important distinction between dreams about flying and dreams about floating. Flying dreams are usually controlled, in the sense that the dreamer can control the flying. Floating dreams, on the other hand, typically involve less control. Usually, the dreamer cannot control the floating.
Do floating dreams and levitating dreams mean the same thing?
The answer to this question depends. In some cases, dreaming about floating or levitating may have the same significance. In other cases, though, dreams that include levitation may have a spiritual component. Because the idea of levitation is associated with Eastern mystical and meditation practices, dreams that include levitation may signify a spiritual balance in your life.
How to Interpret Floating Dreams
In the air
New beginnings, peace, calm
Straight up in the air
You are striving to reach new heights or you are not living up to potential
You may be feeling weighed down or you are trying to understand your subconscious mind
Endless potential, success in troubled times
Good luck, success, happiness
In calm water
You are trying to accomplish something that is difficult, but you will be successful
In waves or turbulent water
You may be struggling with an issue or trying times may be just ahead
And you see someone floating toward you
You have a strong connection with this person
And you see someone floating away from you
Your connection with this person may be weakening
And you see an animal
Happiness and joy
But you are afraid to move
You may be experiencing feelings of self-doubt
Emotions as Clues to Understanding Your Dreams
The emotions that you felt during your floating dream can be very important when trying to understand the meaning. How did you feel while dreaming? Did you feel peaceful, joyful, and free? Or did you feel scared, terrified, or helpless? You can feel all types of emotions in such a dream—there is no wrong answer here.
Paying close attention to the emotions you experienced while dreaming can help you unlock the symbolic meaning. If you felt happy, then it may suggest that you are happy in your waking life. If you were terrified, it can symbolize that there is something that you fear in your life. If you were feeling negative emotions, can you identify situations in your waking life that make you feel similarly? Your dream may be trying to tell you something important about that situation.
Floating Dream Scenarios and What They Mean
There are many variations of floating dreams, each of which can represent a variety of different things in your waking life. We've summarized some of the most common scenarios and symbols in the table above, but now let's take a closer look.
Tell me what floating dreams mean in general?
- Dreaming that you are floating in the air can represent new beginnings. Experts agree that floating dreams are a sign of new freedom in a dreamer's life. This can refer to a variety of different situations and circumstances. For example, you may have moved out on your own for the first time, or you may be starting a new job. Floating dreams can also suggest that we are on a new course or path in life. It is possible that this type of dream points to a career change or a new career in general. It may even refer to a new friendship or relationship.
- Floating dreams can also represent peace and calm in our waking life. This may be a period of your life where you are in total control of your emotions. Everything in your life is in order, and it appears that everything is falling into place. Your dream about floating represents confidence, success, and happiness. This meaning applies whether you are floating in air or in water. In the case of dreams about floating in water, note that the water should be calm, with little to no current, in order for it to signify peace and calm in your outer world.
What if I dream I'm floating straight up in the air?
Drifting straight up in the air in a dream can represent that you are trying to reach new heights in your waking life. It is possible that you are trying new things or that you are pushing yourself to new limits. On the flip side, this type of dream can also suggest that we are not living up to our potential. You can reach great heights, but you have to make the effort to do so. Don't let anyone or anything hold you down.

What does it mean if I'm floating downward?
If you dream that you are floating downward, you are likely experiencing negative emotions. You are feeling the weight of the world on your shoulders. This can refer to any situation, circumstance, or relationship that is making you feel this way. This type of dream may reflect emotions such as anxiety or even depression. Quit letting things weigh you down.
What if I'm floating in space in my dream?
Dreaming that you are floating in space suggests that you will succeed in troubled times. Your life may feel like it is going downhill and that there is nowhere to turn. Your emotions may be running wild—it may feel as though there are no answers. Even so, you will be able to successfully navigate your way through these troubled times. Dreaming that you are drifting in space can also symbolize that your potential is endless, and that you can go as far as you want. Just like space, there are no limits!
What does it mean if I have wings in a dream?
It is considered to be a positive sign if you dream that you are floating in the air and you have wings—it is indicative of good luck and often points to success and happiness in your waking life. Good luck may already be upon you. If not, this dream is a sign that it may soon be on its way.
I was floating on water. What does it mean?
Dreaming that you are gliding or floating on water could reflect that you are going through trying times or a period of uncertainly—but that you will ultimately find success. As you already know, nothing comes easy. Life is full of struggle, pain, and hardship. However, when you go through hell and back, it makes victory taste so much better.
What if I dream about floating on waves or rough waters?
A dream about floating on waves or rough waters could point to a situation in your waking life that is causing you problems. It could also suggest that there may be challenging times in the near future. This anxiety could be brought on by anything, but the turbulence in the water is a sure sign of struggle somewhere in your waking life. Think about what in your life might be causing undue stress or anxiety, and consider how you can try to resolve those issues.
What does it mean if there is an animal in a floating dream?
Experts suggest that animals showing up in this type of reverie is a positive sign. In most cases, the presence of an animal will represent happiness and joy. However, if the animal in your dream is dead, this could be an omen of difficult times in your future.
What if I saw a someone floating toward or away from me?
If you dreamed that a friend or family member is floating toward you, this can represent a close connection that the two of you share. On the other hand, if they are drifting away from you, then it may possibly mean that you are losing your connection with them. Your dream may be telling you that it's a good time to get back in touch.
What if I'm afraid to move in my dream?
If you dreamed that you were floating and you were afraid to move, this could suggest that you are experiencing feelings of self-doubt in your waking life. Do you second guess yourself, or do you believe deep down that you are not worthy or capable? This could refer to many possible aspects of your life. It may be a relationship, work, or another situation. Remember, you are capable of anything. You have to believe in yourself before anyone else will.
(An important question to ask yourself when interpreting this particular floating dream, however, is if you are afraid of heights. If so, this dream may simply reflect that fear.)
Are Floating Dreams Related to Sleep Paralysis?
Before wrapping up, we should address the interesting possibility that some experiences of floating while dreaming could be related to a biological phenomenon known as sleep paralysis. As we fall asleep, our muscles begin to relax—and in fact while we are dreaming our bodies "turn off" our muscles so that we can't move. (If you think about it, that makes sense. If we got up and started reacting to things that were happening in our dreams, we could easily hurt ourselves!)
Sleep paralysis can occur on the borders of our dream cycles, just as we're passing in or out of this stage of sleep. If there's a mismatch between the muscle process and the dream process, it can lead to the odd feeling of being awake but not being able to move. For some people, this may manifest in the paradoxical feeling of floating, rising off the bed, or even having an out-of-body experience.
Understand Your Dreams, Understand Yourself
In general, floating dreams are associated with positive emotions in waking life. However, there are also times when drifting in a dream can suggest negative emotions and situations in your life. In order to discern what your dream means for you, it is important to try your best to recall every symbol that you saw and every emotion that you felt while you were in the dream. Each one of these symbols and emotions can have meaning in your waking life.

I dreamed I was going to see a body of water my best friend had option to purchase water rights. We started walking. Instead of walking I decided to float in the air a little above ground. A guy friend I liked decided to join me. I said I learned this not too long ago. I decided to try traveling this way on my back. I was successful! He said he just learned to travel like this. With Debbie walking behind us we Got to see the body of water, surrounded by houses and a quaint hotel. Decided buying water options not a good idea . We all walked home

Tonight i fell asleep in the living room I fell asleep pretty quickly in my dream I felt scared I couldn't move as if I was paralyzed it was kind of Cloudy and dark I woke up three times out of the dream and went back to bed right back into the same dream I was floating around my house to the ceiling I felt like there was something there but I couldn't see anything I kept telling myself to wake up one part of the dream my mom came from downstairs said that she was looking for something I called out to her and she want to come to me. I woke up fell back asleep and started drifting towards the stairs I seen my sister's dog going upstairs I called out to it. And then I floated up the stairs and the dog was in my room it came to me when I called I touched it. I even said its name kolohe the dogs actually passed away a few years ago and then I woke up. It almost felt like I was still sleeping it took me a few seconds to be able to move. I'm definitely confused even prayed in between one of those dreams just because I was scared I was going on

In my dream, I’m not I control. I’m actually scared, I am being controlled by a unknown entity and it’s not a good entity. I feel paralyzed, floating and paralyzed, I try to yell for help but I can’t. I’m floating inside my “home” to my mom who’s there bu she avoids me, and won’t help me, she tried to get my Dad but still nothing. I finally have a bit of control of my floating and I float out the house. I float away to the street and see a mother with two kids trying to score drugs, so I start yelling at her “bad mother! Bad mother! Bad mother!” The lady starts to freak out and my mother gets there and try’s to stop me but all of the sudden the lady is some sort of small reptile.

Dreamed at first I was in a room ,with other people .I was in control of my levitation . In my control I was up as high as the ceiling ,and people around me were amazed. As the dream continued we all decided to go to sleep. Then my levitation was controlled by another force . Taking me to the ceiling then dropping me down fast ,but never hitting the floor .The stopping motion would be quick before hitting the floor .Soon the people around me were getting scared.because I had no control .I was trying to run away and doors were slamming and closing around me .The levitation became erratic ,being moved around the ceiling and dropping motions . It wasnt scary it was like I had a question mark in a inside asking why is this happening and the reason Iam here writing this very strange dream Iam sharing with you
loopy_lorein on January 26, 2020:
I, somewhat often, have dreams where there is something on the ground I want to avoid, typically dangerous like zombies or once there was this religious inquisition, and it takes all my willpower and effort to float upwards out of reach. I used to have to kick my legs back and forth like I was trying to generate static on a carpet in order to float, then I just had to tilt to change direction like a helicopter. It's different now, its more thought based than anything, but its just as difficult, as if I'm very heavy and have a slippery grip on myself. It's strange and I still cannot understand what it means.

One day I was bored and I had heard of the game. Light as a feather stiff as a bored. I wasn’t with friends so I tried it by myself. It didn’t work haha I just fell asleep and didn’t think much about it. Since that day for about a week and a half I started having dreams where I would see myself sleeping, my body would come up from my bed and levitate all around my room, I would then levitate all the way to the living room and come back to my bed. I would try to move my body but the more I tried to sit up, the harder it was to breathe. My theory for the reason of me not being able to breath was that since it was a dream, I saw myself looking forward, but what if in real life I was facing down to my bed and when I tried to sit up in the dream in real life I was pushing myself into the pillow. But idk haha probably not, it was a dream.Towards the end of the week and a half I was already kinda used to it and knew that I was dreaming whenever it happened, once the whole process of levitating was over, I would go to sleep and that’s when I first did lucid dreaming, after that day I wasn’t scared, hates, and didn’t wake up at 3-4am sweating anymore.I looked forward to having the same dream haha. Eventually I stopped having the same dream for like 2 years. I did look more into lucid dreaming because that dream was the only way I knew how to do it. I found out that I was probably experiencing sleep paralysis but the only difference that I saw from other people was that in mine I was floating around the house. 2 years later I did have the dream again but just once and I was like cool, its been a while haha. It wasn’t the last time I had sleep paralysis but in that way yes.

I had a dream that I couldn't stay on the ground as if I was filled with huliem. I was grabbing on things like poles stop signs and fences or even my own furniture in my house. Almost like a black hole without the black hole and I'm the one being pulled up like a force. I keep having that dream over and over and over and it seems pretty real. Dunno what it means
Crystal M. on November 28, 2019:
I had a dream that my friend and I were standing on a bridge looking down over a small lake with some sand surrounding it. (From up there we could see the whole lake—-it was real small—-like 3 or 4 pools put together and it was in the middle of no where) There were a bunch of teens playing in the sand and writing in it with their feet. I spotted a few spots and told my friend that we can either sit there or sit there! So we both grabbed onto a colorful umbrella and started to float down to the little beach area. Then we got stuck mid air. We were about 15 feet in the air and I told her we needed to just drop. She was scared but she did so. And then I started to float up with the umbrella. So I let go of the umbrella and I still started to float up. I started to think of how (this has happened before in another dream and I thought I was going to float away—-so I got scared) and somehow, super hero-ish, my friend grabbed onto my legs (yes I was like 20 feet in the air I don’t know how she grabbed my legs) and she pulled me down and sat on me so that I couldn’t float up anymore. Then I woke up!!!

I had a dream I was floating and I was at school and I felt free but questioning why people weren't looking at me, it felt real and people didn't look at me, its not like I wasn't there but like it was normal, I had to be over a certain surface to start floating, I talked to teachers and some of my friends, I'm really confused about what it could mean. I felt free and safe.
Bia Azar on August 05, 2019:
I dreamed once that I was floating in space, and other bodies were floating just like me. I could see the stars and everything, but I wasn't happy or sad, or feeling any emotion. I was just there, enjoying the ride. Suddenly I realized the direction we were all going. There was something standing in the middle of space, not human but physically alike, using a long vestment. I believe it was death. the bodies would float to his arms, and he would gently close the person's eyes he was carrying and than send the body back to floating in space. When I got closer to death, I could see his eyes, and it looked to me that death was blind. he would not show any emotion, he was just there, doing his job nonstop, and body after body finally comes my time. Without any surprise, he closed my eyes and and probably I was sent back to space like the other bodies, but from my perspective, what I experienced after he this was truly nothing. Just dark and peace, like I was sleeping. Well I was actually sleeping haha... But it was a nice strange feeling of experience just... nothing. And than I woke up. I caught myself thinking about this dream all the time since than, I guess I will never forget it.

I dreamt that I was floating about 8 feet high through a corridor with green painted walls. I saw 2 people in their individually offices then I floated to the bathroom where I saw a long telescope. Then I floated out of the bathroom down the green corridor. The “so called “ dream ended.
The next day I went for an interview at Wyeth labs and went down the same green coloured walls, met the same 2 individuals and I had to go to the bathroom where I found a telescope which turned out to be a an optical rotation apparatus.
I accepted the job and I worked there 35 years. To this day, I am creeped out by the experience. It was an “out of body experience”

I had a dream I was running, but it felt more like I was floating, in a rectangle shape and around me was just blackness/nothingness. I just kept floating in a rectangle, going to each corner of the shape with no control of it, unable to stop but I don't care. Suddenly, a wall appears in front of me and I think I'm going to hit but instead I freeze in front of it. Next thing I know I'm being pulled into the sky by an unknown force and I feel my whole body to start to tingle and I get scared and wake up.

@ Moxie G, i have the same recurring dream, always differt scenarios but same results. Although i can not see what it is that is moving me around the room as i am asleep in my own dream. But it makes me float around the floor, walls, and ceiling... until i am finally able to scream. In my last dream it propped me up in front of my hisband who was talking to me but did not care that i wasnt responding...then it layed me on the ground and thats when i woke up. I have no idea what these dreams mean or how to interpret them so i am trying lucid dreaming techniques to be more aware when i dream and see if i can get to the bottom of these dreams.

I have had dreams about being levitated, sometime I have been thrown around. Last night I had another dream about being levitated. I haven't had a dream like this in over a year. Last night I feel asleep on the couch. My dad just left for work. I was levitated and moved to a beanbag chair that is in the living room. I remember a woman in white with a blue light on top of me. I tired to move and was not able to talk or move. I wanted to scream out for my mom. I did, but no sound. I tired to stay calm and I slowly started to move. The woman tired to drag me back and I was able to hear sound coming from my mouth. Finally I was able to scream out MOM COME OUT.... PLEASE.. Then I woke up. I was as if I was in a dream within a dream is the best way I can describe it.

It seemed that I've gone into training with unknown faces. Then, out of nowhere, i saw myself in a chair floating from space leading to my old school. The journey was quite terrifying because i can't control the chair, it goes upside down. All i can think of was to hold firmly on the side of my chair. I even saw myself in a chair passing through some college students, by that time, i felt boasting with this kind of new invention... that if they want to learn how to float or fly, they should come to our school. Afterwards, reaching the school, i saw familiar faces like my old classmates and friends but i got an odd feeling because i don't know what's going on - where's our classroom, where's my chair, what's happening. Running after my friend in the snow that's full of glass debris, leading me to our classroom, I only found out i failed a subject. That's quite terrifying, i must say. But the assistant professor told me that i need to prepare a LOA. I don't even know what that means. Then he told me, it is to find justice over my grade. Maybe he doesn't agree with how our prof graded us. I hope you can help me with this odd dream of mine. Thank you. P.S. By the way, the chair looks like a cube without the top and the front and me sitting in the middle. It's a red color or a pink shade.

I was going swimming with my friends but it was really late at night and for some reason I started injecting some drug in my arm which is weird because I never use drugs and I had a bunch of holes in my arms on each side. We got into inner tubes and I started floating down the river and some of my family and some people I know from school were there. But I remember being really scared because it was dark outside and I couldn’t see in the water and people started falling out of their innertube‘s and I saw a few dead people floating in the water. I didn’t want to get out of my inner tube because the current was moving pretty fast but there weren’t any waves or anything and I remember my cousin telling me to calm down and enjoy the river. At the end of the river there was this piece of land or island that we (me and my friends) tried to get on the but there were a bunch of wild animals (huge hyena looking things that kept laughing at us) and were trying to hurt us and the wild animals killed all of my friends except me and I felt really scared and confused but i also didn’t know what to do next because I couldn’t see in the water and I was scared to go back into it because I didn’t know what could be inside. Then At the end of my dream I remember getting a text from one of the friends that had just died and I woke up as I was reading it.

Could someone interpret this please: I was levitating in my dream, it felt amazing and I was in full control. There were people with me who were in awe and I think I was a bit surprised too. I was overwhelmed with my power, in a very good way. It wasn't very high, about 3 stories high, probably reached 20-30 meters maximum. But I was connected with those people, they were impressed and I think at the end of the dream those people rose up and down (kinda levitated too). It was an amazing dream. Felt very real. Thank you :)

I dreamt I was on a bike and attached to that bike was a helium balloon,
As I started to float I had an electric fan on the back of my bike, I noticed I didn't even need to peddel, as the electric fan started to push me forward,
I look down and in front of me on the handle bars are two buttons,
My left button says
My Right button says
I felt Soooo free I could fly with complete control using both buttons to zip zag inbetween, trees hills, and even a battle field where the enemy where firing arrows at me and missing.
My bike that was floating and flying at the same time manoeuvred me out of trouble all on its own.
I woke up with a feeling of joy and happiness even in a time of financial hardship.
I felt sooo calm and I know my time of success is on its way.
Thank you for letting me express my dream

I used to float in dreams and I struggled to come down but forces are too great for me to drop. The more I fear staying up the more I fly away. It seems i fear rising while the world keeps me high.
They dreams are back as i try to change careers.
May the come to pass

Darkwaters, thanks for the comment and great question. Flying and floating may be both controlled or not controlled. As per dreams, the difference is this very action. If you're in control of flight, flying or floating, it suggest that you have control over your emotions. If you don't, it suggest that you don't have control over your emotions. Of course, you need all of the other elements of the dream to understand the full meaning. So, we'd have to know the other elements and emotions you felt in this dream.

What about Flying/Floating dreams? In my dreams floating is a conscious and controllable event, when I leave the ground, direction, even how high I go. While this is an exciting experience it is also disturbing as I am away that this ability is unnatural and not something I should be able to do. How would this change the meaning of the dreams since it seems that my floating is more like unsupported flight.

Yes it is. And it is referenced a lot in my poetry, as I am seeing here in my hubs, as well. What a great reference this is. Thank you again. :)

Appreciate all your comments and support ALWAYS. Votes, friendship, all of it! Will be around to read all your work and more. Til, don't feel bad, I can't remember mine either! LOL Ruby, the car symbolizes yourself, your own emotions. May be an emotion that is making you feel lost or at this point in your life, you don't no which route to take.

I am happy to read that floating dreams are good, i have had some in the past. It's strange but i mostly dream of being lost while driving my car. I know it symbolizes something, but what?..Cheers.

These hubs are so great! You are our new dream guru. Everything is covered so comprehensively. Really, you write it out so well and make it so easy to read.
Funny, I haven't thought of interpreting my dreams until I started reading your hubs. Right now I'm not remembering my dreams, I do for a second or two when I first wake up but then they're gone....Hmmm....where does that leave me ;)
Voted up, useful, and interesting....and now I'm going to check out more.
