Why Consider Chakras in Dream Interpretation?

Our dreams can reveal a number of things to us: how we feel, what we are thinking, what needs our attention, possible solutions to a problem we are facing, and so much more. Dreams have many purposes in our lives. These purposes can range from processing the emotional residue of the day to fulfilling our quest toward spiritual enlightenment. One function our dreams may serve is to reveal information related to our chakras and their corresponding energies.

What Are Chakras?

Chakras are the body's energy centers. They are believed to be shaped like spinning wheels or funnels. The goal for our chakras is to bring them into alignment as a means of achieving overall energetic balance. This balanced energy affects us not only physically, but emotionally, psychologically, and spiritually.

In many ways, considering chakras as we explore dreams allows us to view our dreams in a more holistic way. Our dreams are often layered. For example, a symbol within a dream could have multiple meanings to the dreamer. The concept of chakras compliments the layering of meanings in our dreams because each chakra has a layered influence on a person's overall being.

While we search for the meaning of our dreams, we may find that identifying symbols associated with specific chakras enriches our overall understanding of our dreams. Most importantly, integrating our understanding of our chakras with our dreams has the capacity to enrich our understanding of ourselves.

Your dreams can be signals that your chakras are:

  • balanced,
  • overactive,
  • underactive,
  • blocked, or
  • opening.

Let's begin to explore each chakra and how it may relate to your dreams. Considering the meanings of colors in your dreams may add additional insight. Since our dreams tend to reflect the higher chakras, we will begin from the top to bottom.

7th Chakra: Crown or Sahasrara

Isn't this chakra just divine?

This chakra is located at the crown or top of the head and is typically associated with the colors of purple or white. It is associated with spirituality, the connection with our high selves, spiritual knowledge, and your ability to connect to spiritual messages.

Dream symbols and images associated with this chakra would likely relate to the top of your head, the top of someone else's head, an animal's head, a crown, a hat, or objects that stand out in either the color purple or white.

Examples of Dreams

  • Dreaming of an injury to the top of the head may relate to blockages at this chakra.
  • Dreaming of a beautiful string attached to someone's head may relate to the activation of this chakra.
  • One dreamer shared a dream of finding a magical egg. She was able to open the top and discovered it had a beam of light. She used this magical egg as a flashlight—it shed light on her path so she could get home. Once she related the egg and this light to the crown chakra, she had better insight into her dream.

6th Chakra: Third-Eye or Ajna

The third-eye chakra is located on the forehead/brow and is associated with the color indigo. This chakra is associated with a person's ability to access their insight, psychic abilities, intuition, imagination, and dreams.

Dream symbols and images associated with this chakra may include the color indigo and relate to the forehead, an eye, or the mind.

Examples of Dreams

  • Dreaming of a psychic or being psychic.
  • Dreaming of crystal balls.
  • Dreaming of having a third eye.
  • One dreamer shared a dream that involved having an ear in the middle of her forehead. She gained greater insight into the meaning of her dream when she considered how this could relate to this chakra. She recognized the dream's message as a need to listen to her intuition.
  • Another dreamer shared a dream that involved having only one eye where her third-eye chakra would be located. She not only associated this with having a myopic view of her situation, but she also associated it with having an unbalanced chakra. This interpretation resulted in her deciding to make adjustments in her life and her thinking that would better support her intuition and dreams.

5th Chakra: Throat or Vishudda

Just as the name suggests, the throat chakra is located at the throat. This chakra is associated with the color blue, creativity, and personal expression.

Dream symbols and images associated with this chakra may relate to the color blue, the neck, the throat, speaking, writing, and objects associated with the neck (e.g., a necklace or scarf). This symbol can be easily hidden in objects such as the neck of a bottle.

Examples of Dreams

  • Dreaming of a frog—especially a blue one—may relate to having a "frog in one's throat," or difficulty expressing oneself.
  • Dreaming of a necklace that is too tight may relate to constrictions or blockages in this area.
  • One dreamer shared a dream that involved a singing necklace from The Little Mermaid. She believed this related to the opening of her throat chakra and her ability to fully express herself.

8th Chakra: High Heart or Thymic Chakra

Although not considered one of the seven main chakras, I find the high heart chakra referenced in dreams quite often and believe it is useful to include on this list.

The high heart chakra is located by the thymus gland, or just above the heart on the breast bone. This chakra is associated with turquoise, pink, and white. Sometimes referred to as the seat of the soul, this chakra is associated with empathy, joy, peace, serenity, unconditional love, forgiveness, and balanced emotions. This love is associated with having a love that extends beyond ourselves and close loved ones to all of humanity and Earth.

Dream symbols and images associated with this chakra could involve the colors turquoise, pink, or white and relate to a human chest, a chest/box, the heart, the lungs, or clothing/objects positioned around this location of the body.

Examples of Dreams

  • Dreaming of difficulty breathing.
  • Dreaming of a heart.
  • One dreamer shared a dream that involved finding pink and turquoise conversation hearts. She made the association to this chakra and believed her dream's message involved speaking from her heart.
The high heart chakra is not one of the primary chakras, but can still have implications for your dreams.

4th Chakra: Heart or Anahata

The heart chakra is located by the heart and is associated with the color green. This chakra relates to compassion, self-love, and relating.

Dream symbols and images associated with this chakra may relate to the color green, the heart, the center of the chest, or the center of an object.

Examples of Dreams

  • Dreaming there is a hole in your shirt where this chakra would be located.
  • Dreaming of being stabbed or injured in the heart.
  • After a breakup, one dreamer dreamed that her heart turned to lead, became heavy, and weighed her down to the bottom of an ocean. She found the reference to her heartbreak obvious. But when she also considered chakras, she realized this dream was also referencing her recent shielding of herself from her heart. By retreating from her emotional pain, she had closed in on herself and plunged deeper into sadness and depression.

3rd Chakra: Solar Plexus, Naval Chakra, or Manipura

The solar plexus is located by the navel and is associated with the color yellow. Often referred to as the seat of emotions, this chakra is associated with our personal power in the world and refers to mental activities, intellect, and our will.

Dream symbols and images associated with this chakra could involve the color yellow, the stomach, the gastrointestinal tract, the center of objects, the Sun, lemons, and articles of clothing located at this point of the body.

Example of Dreams

  • Dreaming of yellow light emitting from your body.
  • Dreaming of being called "yellow" or a coward.
  • One dreamer shared a dream that involved people throwing rotten lemons at her after a performance. Since she would expect rotten tomatoes, she looked deeper into the symbol. This dreamer found greater insight when considering how the symbolism of this chakra specifically related to her self-confidence and insecurities.

2nd Chakra: Sacral or Svadishthana

The sacral chakra is located just below the navel and is associated with the color orange. This chakra refers to emotions, creativity, sexuality, and reproduction.

Dream symbols and images associated with the second chakra may include the color orange, oranges (the fruit), the pelvic area, or articles of clothing worn around this area (e.g., belts).

Examples of Dreams

  • Dreaming of an orange belt that is too tight may relate to feeling restricted or blocked in this area.
  • Dreaming of an orange light illuminating everything in the dream may relate to overactivity.
  • One woman entering menopause shared a dream that involved attempting to stop people from plucking all of the oranges off of orange trees she found in her yard. She later understood her dream to be about her feelings about this stage in her life and its impact on her ability to reproduce.

1st Chakra: Root or Muladara

The root chakra is located at the base of the spine and is associated with the color red. This chakra grounds us in the physical world and refers to our sense of safety, survival, grounding, and nourishment.

Dream symbols and images associated with the root chakra may relate to the color red, roots, the Earth, dirt, or the bottom of objects.

What Do Your Dreams Mean?

Dreams can have intricately layered meanings, and chakras and energy represent just one layer of meaning. It is important not to limit our interpretations of our dreams to just one meaning.

Our unconscious minds are amazing and creative. One symbol may have multiple significant meanings for us psychologically, emotionally, intellectually, spiritually, interpersonally, and even cosmically. Each dream is a deeply personal experience, and it is ultimately up to each dreamer to understand what their dreams mean for themselves.

I never thought of this before. Your explanation of the multiple levels of dreams opens up a whole new way of interpreting dreams.

When I think about it now, and relate the chakras to various things I remember from recent dreams, I can see that I've been missing some of the meanings of my dreams by not considering associations of hidden levels.
