Aura Colors Interpreted
What is an Aura?
What exactly is an aura? An aura is a color field surrounding a person, as is seen in pictures of religious art. It can extend several inches or even one foot away from the person. Auras are deemed important in many forms of spiritual practice, in metaphysics, Buddhist, and Hindu spirituality. Auras sometime connote a person of holiness or other powers. Psychic healer Edgar Cayce believed that all living things and objects have an aura. Various personality traits are associated with different colors of auras. Auras have also been described as the map of thoughts and feelings going on inside of a person. Some people can “feel” auras instead of seeing them, and understand what is happening with another person.

Edgar Cayce Could Read Auras
Science tells us that color is our perception of the effects of wavelengths and their frequencies. Readings from Edgar Cayce affirm that the colors we see are associated with the way we perceive different rates of vibrations. It was also Cayce’s belief that the colors in our auras changed in accordance with the vibrations of our spiritual energies, our changes of mood, and the people surrounding us at the time. Cayce was a very religious man, and was unsure if he should use his gift of reading auras to help others. He was often able to heal them, both by reading auras and by going into trance states to “see” what was ailing a sick person. Finally, he concluded that if God gave him a gift to heal, he was meant to use it.
Edgar Cayce's Essay on Auras and Colors
I have found this book to be very useful in my study of auras. Edgar Cayce is so interesting, anything written about him is worth the time.
Auras can be Seen through Kirlian Photography
Most children are psychic until they are about seven, and many can see auras. But when they tell their parents, are usually told, “Be quiet, people will think you are crazy!” Sadly, I have met many adults during the course of my metaphysical studies who can recall having this gift when young, and were told not to use it. Auras can be seen by Kirlian photography though, and I have aura photos of myself and my late husband which were taken at Metaphysical Fairs. The colors themselves give information about a person’s emotional, physical, mental and spiritual state.
What if a Person Has no Aura?
This is an anecdote taken from Auras: An Essay On the Meaning of Color, by Edgar Cayce. One day Cayce was shopping in a large department store. He headed toward an elevator, but it was almost full. He realized it seemed dark inside that elevator, even though he was able to see the colors of clothing on the people. Cayce realized something was wrong, but could not figure out what that was. He signaled for them to go on, that he would wait for the next one. But then he realized what the problem was. The people in the elevator had no auras! The elevator cable snapped, the car fell to the basement, and everyone on the elevator was killed.
Color Affects our Moods
It was also Cayce’s belief that even if people could not see auras, they could wear clothes in colors that made them feel good, or that wearing certain colors could make a person feel bad. Sometimes a person can try on the same shirt in two colors, and will be surprised at how great it looks and feels in one color, but they do not like it at all in another color. Cayce had a friend who often wore blue, and enjoyed a happy, normal life. Then for a while, the friend began wearing red, and he became increasingly nervous and sick. He finally had a nervous breakdown, and when he recovered, returned to wearing blues again!
So why not go through the colors and see what they tell us about auras?
Meaning of a Blue Aura
Blue has always been the color of contemplation, spirit, prayer and heaven. The sky is blue because gas molecules in the air cause light rays from the Sun to be scattered. At least this is the scientific explanation; Cayce believed blue was the true color of our Sun, and also the color of Jupiter, ruler of great thoughts and high mindedness. All shades of blue are positive, but the deeper shades are the best.
Pale blue shows a person of less depth, but they are trying to be more mature. The person may not be talented, but will still work hard to try to be in the field of their choice. Blue means many heartaches and headaches, but the person will keep going in the right direction. People with blue auras are caring, sensitive, loving, and have a desire to be of service. They are verbally skilled and good problem solvers. They also make great healers.
Aqua belongs to a hard working person more than the one with a light blue aura, but talent wise they are about the same. Aqua denotes intuitive knowledge, a good communicator, a seeker of truth, and a flexible, spiritual person open to new things. Those immersed in a darker blue have found their work in life and are immersed in it. They can be moody and are often nonconformists, but they have a mission in life and intend to fulfill it. They are very spiritually minded, and dedicate much time to causes to help others, also having talent in art, science or social work. They are often writers or singers. In the early Church people with blue auras were thought to have been assigned the highest attainments of the soul.
Meaning of a Red Aura
Red is a strong, primary color, indicating force, vigor and energy. People with red auras are physically active, passionate, courageous, leaders and entrepreneurs. It shows a temperamental person who is experiencing a lot of emotional turmoil, although they may not outwardly show it. This person will be domineering and quick to act. If the red is seen in spikes, it means the person is nervous. It is good to wear red on a day when you need confidence, like when going on a job interview, or giving a speech. If a person is going through a lot of issues at the time, red stones or clothing can bring more harmony into their life. Red also means a strong ego. An aura with a lot of red suggests a person should take some time to relax and calm down. Red is the color of planet Mars. It is also the color of war, strife and sacrifice.
Meaning of a Pink Aura
Pink is usually a sign of immaturity, and is normally more commonly seen in young people. Sometimes they are too young to understand their psychic abilities, and are scared they can pick up on the thoughts and feelings of others. If a pink aura is seen in an older person, they can be immature adults, and have childish concerns. But these people also are tender, empathetic, able to care for themselves and others. They have healing ability and are good at public relations. When a person is speaking about someone they love, they often have a pink or rosy aura around them. A couple in love; sitting close together, often has a pink or rosy aura surrounding both of them.
My Husband's Aura
Meaning of an Orange Aura
Orange is the color of the Sun, a good and vital color which means thoughtfulness and consideration of others. People with orange in their aura are outgoing and fun. This person likes challenges, creative outlets, and is confident and spontaneous. They are wise, business oriented and have faith in themselves. A golden orange indicates self control, but a brownish orange shows a lack of ambition and a sort of “I don’t care” attitude. People with that shade of orange aura may be repressing their emotions, or are just plain lazy. Those with orange auras are often subject to kidney troubles. Orange represents glory, virtue, and the fruits of the Earth, all of these naturally connected with the Sun. People with orange auras are optimists who are usually the life of the party, and get everyone doing something fun and interesting.
Meaning of a Yellow Aura
Yellow is the second primary color. A golden yellow indicates good health and well being. Yellow aura people are playful and have a whimsical side. They are thoughtful, optimistic, knowledgeable, easy going, and entertaining. These are people who take care of themselves, don’t worry, and learn easily. In the picture of my husband’s aura, you can see a yellow spot above his head. This is a sign of high intelligence, and it is rare. I have never met a person as brilliant as he was. We learned in one of our classes that people drawn to the study of metaphysics are “a step above”, and on some level know they have lived before, and once knew the answers to many metaphysical truths. Normally people who take such a class together knew each other in another lifetime, as there are no accidents! Yellow is the color of concentration, and denotes love of learning. These people are happy, friendly and helpful, the ones who say something kind to make you feel better. A ruddy yellow makes them more timid or shy. Mercury is the planetary ruler of yellow.
Meaning of a Green Aura
Green is the color of health and vitality. It is helpful, strong and friendly. Many doctors, nurses, chiropractors, psychologists, spiritual counselors or massage therapists have a lot of green in their auras because it is a healing energy. These people are harmonious, lovers of people, animals and nature, sympathetic, compassionate and adaptable. They have the ability to calm others. You will see in the picture of my aura, it is mostly shades of blues with only traces of greens around the edges. One evening a few years ago, I was talking with my husband.. He said, “I forgot to tell you. The other night you were reading as you sat on the love seat. You were surrounded by a green aura, and it was a strong one, it radiated about 6-8 inches from you. At the time you seemed so peaceful and relaxed, I did not want to interrupt you.” Although I am a nervous person, people tell me I have the ability to calm others. An aura of green-blue makes a person trustworthy, and you can see that in my aura above. If it has traces of yellow, the health is somewhat weakened. A very lemony green, with lots of yellow, shows deceit in a person. So as a rule of thumb, a little of the deep, healing green is the most helpful in your aura. Too much green can indicate depression.
Meaning of an Indigo Aura
Indigo is a darker blue with a touch of purple, indicating a person who is a spiritual seeker in life. This person is searching for a cause or religious and spiritual experiences. Once they find what they are searching for, their auras will likely return to a darker blue. These people have deep inner feelings, are intuitive, idealists, are authentic, and have the ability to feel Universal love. They are often environmentalists or social workers. It appears that once the life purpose is set, the natural emanation of the soul is blue. Indigo is also the color associated with the third eye, and people with indigo in the aura are usually very psychic, and can use that gift to heal and help others. They are often clairvoyant or talented in reading people by their senses.
Meaning of a Violet Aura
Violet is the color of the crown chakra, and people with violet in the aura are usually very involved in churches or other spiritual causes, often living a life of service to others. They are still searching for answers to their own spiritual questions, but know more than the average person and have something to offer as a spiritual teacher or guide. They often volunteer a lot of time to helping the less fortunate, or to fund-raising for different causes to make life less stressful for others. These are visionaries, creative souls, who are inspirational, non conformists, charismatic, and often are artists, therapists or healers.
Auras in Religious Art
Meaning of a White Aura
White is the perfect color, since it contains all the others. It is associated with purity, holiness and wholeness. If our souls are in perfect balance, then all our color vibrations would blend and we would have an aura of pure white. These are highly motivated people, philosophers, healers and bringers of light. We see pictures of Jesus with an aura of pure white, especially ones that depict him after the Resurrection. When he was seen risen at the tomb, Jesus said, “Touch me not for I am newly risen.” Cayce believes this was a warning, because at that time Jesus’ vibrations would have been so powerful that anyone touching him would have been killed. Some people see flashes of white when they meditate or just in their normal vision. This can be a change or awakening of their consciousness.
Meaning of a Gold Aura
Gold corresponds to anything valuable and worthwhile, and may even be associated with the Divine. Jesus is often portrayed as having a gold or white aura, as are other religious figures. It is related to spiritual truths, and personal attainment. Cayce said that the highest color vibrations were contained in gold and purple, colors that have always been associated with royalty. He told people to wear those colors to find personal contentment and happiness.

Meaning of a Black Aura
Black is associated with the unknown or unconscious, and can correspond to evil, death, and repressed feelings. Normally a person with bad thoughts in mind would have a black aura. Many witches and Wiccans dress in black. I like nature and consider myself to be a Pagan, though not Wiccan. Clairvoyants often wear black as a protection against picking up negative emotions of those they read for, and I have also done that when I read tarot or astrology charts for people. Crystals are also used to keep away harmful entities. So it seems safe to wear the clothing, but if you see a black aura around a person, be very careful. The aura may be black mixed with sort of a pea soup green, but if somebody near you has it, they mean to do you harm. Get away.
Auras Explain Much about People
The world as we understand it is very small, and if we could see all the colors there really were, it would probably prove to be too much for us. Five hundred years before Christ, Pythagoras, the first philosopher, used colors for healing. Medical science today is just starting to see the possibilities in this method. If colors are vibrations of our spiritual forces, they should be able to help in healing our deepest sorrows and ailments. Together with music, which is a kindred spiritual force, there is great hope for the therapy of the future. Of course, right now we cannot transform all auras into a pure white light, but we can learn to detect signs of physical, mental, and nervous disorders through color, and begin to treat patients in a proper way.
Auras tell a great deal about people, and have much spiritual significance. The colors are a characteristic of the vibration of matter, and our Souls seem to reflect our colors back into the world. We are patterns, we project colors, and they are there for those who can see them. Teachers of metaphysics say more people can see auras now than ever before, just with their naked eyes. Perhaps we are evolving to a higher level? Let’s hope so.
Questions & Answers
My granddaughter is four. She said her pa's hair was green, then blue, then black, and was supposed to go back to rainbow color but it didn't. She saw this at the time he was passing. What did this mean?
I am very sorry for your loss and for your granddaughter. She apparently can see auras. Blue is a very spiritual color; it means he felt peace and calm at the time of his passing. Green is a healing color, so maybe he felt whole right before he passed. Or he was a healer or doctor of some sort in life? By the time she saw the black, his soul had left his body, so he was already gone.
I can't see auras myself, although I have been with people I love at their time of death. So I don't know if the aura goes back to all the colors after the soul goes on its journey to wherever you believe. So I can't answer why it didn't go back to rainbow.
But the black is not bad, it's just the absence of color, and that is normal, since by that time he already left his physical body. The blue and green are both spiritual and calming colors, so at least he was feeling comfortable at the time and was not suffering. Blessings to you during this difficult time.
In terms of auras, what do large orange spikes mean?
Orange is a positive, energetic kind of energy. If the aura shows large spikes of orange, that would be an optimistic person spreading good feelings around.
