How to Dress Like a Scorpio

Andrea has a background in Myers-Briggs and Western astrology. She mostly writes about relationships.

Scorpio outfits should look mysterious, dark, and seductive. The sign is elegant, so they need clothes that fit well and don't look sloppy.

Scorpio Fashion

Slip into a black coat, don your tallest boots, and trim your hair. Scorpio dresses in a way that shows they are serious, not to be messed with, and on the dark side. You're not into cutesy little things like frills and ruffles; you're into leather, stilettos, and armbands shaped like snakes.

To project a Scorpio vibe, your clothes should be a proper fit for your body. Go to a tailor if you're having trouble finding clothes that fit you. The Scorpio look is refined, marvelous, and sexy. You should look like you take your job seriously; you're not a kindergartner who chopped a dress in pieces with plastic scissors.

Colors

It should come as no surprise that Scorpio's power color is black. The sign rules over everything that is gothic, vampiric, and haunted. The fixed water sign leans more toward yin than yang, so opt for more subdued shades of gray, blue—and yes—black.

Scorpio can get away with red, even though they're a water sign and red is associated with fire. Dark reds are especially flattering for Scorpio, as are other colors that project urgency, power, and confidence. The water sign has a strong ego; in traditional astrology, the fixed water sign was ruled by Mars, the warring planet. In contemporary times, Scorpio is associated with Pluto, which is the planet of darkness, the subconscious, death, and rebirth. Portions of the mysterious planet are red.

In traditional astrology, Mars was shared by Aries and Scorpio. The two signs do have some overlapping features, even though one is the cardinal sign of fire and the other is the fixed sign of water. In ancient Rome, some of the most important military festivals and campaigns took place in March and October (Aries is partially in March; Scorpio is partially in October).

Pluto, the Roman god, was associated with the underworld—where souls went after they died. Scorpio in this way should take up cthonic themes. The water sign deals with death, so their color palette isn't happy, sweet, and friendly—avoid yellow, pink, and green.

Other colors suitable for Scorpio include burnt orange, violet, dark red, and pomegranate. When in doubt, think of colors appropriate for fall and Halloween.

Dark blue is better than a light, cheerful blue. Avoid robin egg or sky blue, which scream sunshine and daises. Yellow and pink are more associated with spring, so avoid them at all costs. Darker shades are always better than lighter shades when it comes to Scorpio. White doesn't make sense for you, so use it sparingly.

Scorpios are the kings and queens of Halloween. Put on something spooky, and you'll probably be in the ballpark of a Scorpio aesthetic.

Patterns

If Scorpio wears something with a pattern, it should be subtle and elegant. Avoid shirts and other garments with lots of words. Scorpio is the fixed sign of water, so they're in tune with emotions, not words.

Patterns with snakes, scorpions, fish, birds, and wolves are fair game for the sign, and all for different reasons:

  • Snakes represent the lowest evolution state of Scorpio. Snakes are a symbol of rebelliousness and cleverness. They are cunning and know how to make things work for themselves.
  • Scorpions are the second evolution stage of the fixed water sign. Scorpions are associated with intimidation and fear. Consider wearing jewelry of scorpions or displaying the creature as an emblem on a tie or scarf.
  • Birds are the final evolution stage of the sign. Astrologers often refer to it as the phoenix or eagle. Wear something tasteful with a pattern of feathers. Wear a cardigan or shirt with elegant and floaty sleeves.
  • Fish are of course the base animal for water signs. Mammals are associated with fire, reptiles with earth, birds for air, and fish for water. Fish know all the secrets of the dark and cold ocean.
  • Wolves are the symbol of Mars, the god of war. The fourth planet from the Sun was named after the Roman god, and in traditional astrology, it was the ruling planet for Scorpio. In contemporary astrology, Pluto is the water sign's ruling planet, so you could also consider patterns of the Cerberus or hellhounds for Scorpio. Grim dogs also go with the Greek/Roman underworld theme.

Scorpio can do just fine by eschewing patterns and can rock solid colors while still looking divine. The sign wants to look mature and serious, not childlike. Scorpios are the deities of the underworld, not teachers for a pre-school pageant show. Black is their calling card, silver is their queen, dark red is their spell, dark blue is their potion, and purple is their nirvana.

Images related to Halloween are appropriate for the sign. Consider wearing garments with patterns of skeletons, dragons, witches, devils, pumpkins, aliens, bats, or apples.

What to Wear

CategoriesDoDon't

Colors

Black, red, gray, silver, dark blue, purple, and burnt orange.

Pastels, light pink, white, yellow, gold, light blue, green, and brown.

Jewelry

Sleek designs are a plus. Opt for silver, rubies, opal, tourmaline, and diamonds. Earrings, rings, and subtle jewelry work for this sign. Images of snakes and scorpions will get the point across.

Cutesy jewelry, lots of charms, something juvenile, kitschy. Gold is too bold, pink is more in line with Libra, and giant pieces scream Leo.

Hair

Slick back, straight and long, let your grays shine, distinct shapes, serious looking, and side parts. Embrace your natural hair color and enhance it.

Lots of colors, wild shapes, mullets, middle part, unkempt.

Makeup

Red lipstick, silver eyeshadow, dark eyeliner, dark mascara, reddish blush, touch of powder, gothic, serious, sexy, fall palette.

Cutesy, lots of pink, glitter, too many colors, spring palette.

Tops/Shirts

Midriff, solid colors, silver, black, standard sleeves, sexy but sophisticated cuts.

Lots of frills, ruffles, or bells. Avoid spring colors. You should look mature and serious, not juvenile and capricious. Your James Bond, not Austin Powers.

Pants/Bottoms

Leather, black pants, skinny jeans, slacks, suits, anything sleek and sharp fitting.

Pastel pants, jeans with cutesy designs, pants with many colors, stringy pants or pants with holes, anything that makes you look immature.

Dresses/skirts

You need a whole section dedicated to black dresses. You want clothes that look appropriate for an adult. Less patterns, more solid colors. Any style that looks flattering and brings the eyes to the midsection.

Anything too cutesy, frills, ruffles, bells, bows, and clasps. Spring colors, gold, overly shiny numbers, and too many straps.

Accessories

Ties, belts, cuff links, sunglasses, and scarves.

Mittens, bonnets, anklets, and goofy hats.

Shoes

Polished, shiny, expensive, black, red, sleek. Heels, flats, dress shoes.

Crocs, flip flops, and anything with flashy colors.

Jewelry

Scorpio should opt for silver over gold because it's more mysterious and subtle. Jewelry should stick to one color for gems and not have a mix of colors—blue or red gems are ideal for Scorpio. Diamonds are appropriate for every sign, and Scorpio likes quality rather than cheap-looking things.

Silver jewelry that looks elegant and expensive is befitting. Bracelets and watches are pluses, as well as tie clips, cufflinks, and silver stud earrings. Don't wear too much jewelry. If your neck is hurting from a necklace, you're definitely overdoing it. Big statement pieces are more of a fire sign thing to do; Scorpio is more subdued.

For work occasions or school, reduce your jewelry down to a couple of items. For a night downtown, add a little more jewelry, but don't make it flashy. If you find something elegant with snakes, wear it.

Scorpio's hair is precise, groomed, and attractive. The sign wants to look well manicured.

Hair

Your hair should be slicked back, smooth, straight, and flowing. It should be clean, trimmed, and professional, not unkempt. Scorpio shows they can handle things by indicating finesse in how they care for their hair, nails, and skin. You should radiate when you walk into a room, but people will likely struggle to figure out why.

Don't go wild with hair dye. I recommend bringing out your natural hair color. If you are blonde, make your hair a brilliant blonde. If your hair is dark, dye it a shade darker. Silver and gray are something you and other water signs can pull off. A salt-and-pepper hairstyle suits you just fine.

If your hair is naturally curly, do what you can to make it look styled rather than frizzy. Scorpio is about going with the natural elements you're born with and bringing them out into their best form.

For the Scorpio makeup look: opt for red lipstick, gray or silver eyeshadow, cat eyes, a natural cheek color, and red fingernails.

Makeup

At work, Scorpio will look professional and serious. Don't go wild with makeup, and try to make yourself look good without going overkill. A Scorpio makeup palette should include red lipstick, dark pinks, black mascara, black eyeliner, gray eyeshadow, and foundation that matches your skin tone.

For a night out on the town, you want your makeup to be more dramatic and sexy. Wear a stronger lipstick shade, put on fake eyelashes, and draw on some cat eyes. You should look serious and powerful, not cutesy and friendly. You're not Libra with pink shades and smiles. You're trying to project a Scorpio vibe, which is more like a model on a runway.

Scorpio fashion looks attractive, sleek, and leaves plenty of room for mystery. Throw on some sunglasses and a dark gray suit to give off a cool vibe.

Clothes

Scorpio clothes should look fitted, dark, mysterious, and alluring. Your clothes look age-appropriate, and a little threatening. You might want to take some fashion notes from the TV show What We Do in the Shadows.

Suits in black and gray are a plus. You want to look svelte, not corny, downcast, or ambiguous. Scorpio looks precise, ready for action, and brooding. Wear ties, leather jackets, red high heels, and polished business shoes.

Shirts/Tops

If it's business appropriate and in black, blue, or gray, it likely works for Scorpio. Solid colored tops are an excellent choice. Avoid shirts with random frills. You don't want people thinking you're extra; you're not an air sign in bright colors.

Wear crisp and clean clothes that fit you well. A little bit of midriff is okay because Scorpio rules the root chakra. Cleavage is okay too, as long as you're not wearing something that's overtly ostentatious. You're seductive and flirtatious, but you always leave room for mystery.

Buttons on shirts should be normal and not extravagant or excessive. Opt for materials that look comfortable and flatter your skin.

Pants/Bottoms

If you're a Scorpio and I looked through your wardrobe, I would want to see an array of pants in black. (You should also have pants in gray). Buy black slacks, black jeans, and black athletic gear. I would expect some leather/pleather in your closet. Avoid white or anything spring-like, especially for pants.

Whatever you put on your legs, it shouldn't be baggy or too tight. You want the perfect fit, so you should probably befriend a tailor. Skinny jeans with some room looks good on you. Scorpio outfits have a kind of precision to them that makes people look sexy, smart, and sophisticated.

Dresses/Skirts

You need about 15 little black dresses. Don't buy the same dress to fill up closet space. Buy a variety of dresses in different styles, but make sure you have black dresses that you can wear for any occasion. Avoid spring colors like a hawk and avoid floral prints. Your outfits need to look like fall, not spring.

You're not a Sagittarius, Capricorn, or Aquarius, so you don't need to show a lot of leg. An appropriate Scorpio dress or skirt will cover the thighs and end just above the knees. Mini skirts and pencil skirts are okay, but a little more length will promote sophistication. You really want people's eye to go toward your waist, so hourglass dresses and the like are a plus. Bringing the eye-line below the waist is okay.

A Scorpio's shoes should look polished and debonair.

Shoes

A Scorpio should have excellent taste in shoes. You buy high-quality shoes that look sharp, clean, and mysterious. For those that rock more feminine shoes, you should have high heels in black, red, and gray. Close-toed shoes are better than open-toed ones. Wear shoes that are pointy with straps. And it should be stated, fake reptile skin definitely has Scorpio vibes.

Boots should be tall and black. Scorpio legs look good in pantyhose, solid-colored leggings, or fishnets. Booties or ankle boots are okay, as long as they still have a sense of demure about them. No pink booties!

Sneakers or running shoes should be plain with nothing too exciting about them. Opt for darker-colored sneakers and avoid white and/or anything old-fashioned or goofy.
