The Fashion of a Sagittarius
Pulling off the Sagittarius look on a daily basis isn't for the faint of heart. This sign is a trickster whose fashion can't be easily pinned down. Though it is a mutable fire sign, it rebels against the norms of its fire cousins—Aries and Leo. Sagittarius instead takes notes from air signs and leans into bright colors, absurd patterns, and eccentricity.
Sagittarius loves colors and embraces them more than Aries and Leo, who stick primarily to vibrant shades of red, orange, yellow, and gold. The ostentatious ways of Sagittarius are muted by the fact that the sign occurs in late fall and likes to play with youthfulness and wizened maturity. One moment they're caught up in the merriment of holidays, toys, and hot drinks, and the next moment, they're dying to tour a library and spend hours looking through a telescope.
My recommendation when designing outfits for "a Sagittarius look" is to consider what the professors in the Harry Potter movies wore. (Stay away from Severus Snape who depicts the traditional Scorpio. Dolores Umbridge is a conformist, so avoid her style as well.)
Here are some of the Hogwarts professors who know the magical secrets of the centaur zodiac:
- Rubeus Hagrid has the disheveled and wonderful look of a wild Sagittarius who bucks trends. His focus on animal care as well as his unusual track into becoming a teacher makes him very Sagittarius-like. Let your hair and beard hang wild like this caretaker.
- Quirinus Quirrell's wardrobe is based around one color: purple. His unusual attire is the key to his ultimate secret.
- Sybill Trelawney is perhaps the most absurd professor of all, definitely the most aloof. She doesn't really blend in with others. Her clothes: a faded green dress, head scarves with fall patterns, oversized blanket-ponchos, bifocal glasses, and tattered bags. She is the embodiment of late fall.
- Albus Dumbledore, yet another professor who is difficult to understand because they're evasive. His favorite color is purple, he wears funny hats, and he delights in the company of a phoenix.
Purple—the color of royalty, spirituality, and awareness—is the power color for Sagittarius. This vibrant color encourages risk-taking and luck, and creative types and artists tend to favor the color more than traditionalists. The color inspires people, which is one of the root traits of a fire sign.
Sagittarius dates are November 22 to December 21, and its ruling planet is Jupiter, the planet of luck, risk-taking, and curiosity. As the weaker flame of the zodiac, Sagittarius embraces colors that Aries and Leo do not (e.g., blue, silver, and pink). Look to fall colors, and you'll figure out the Sagittarius color palette. Rusted reds, oranges, and yellows are all favorable—I would avoid green or anything spring-like.
Below I've added a list of colors that elements tend to favor:
- Fire: red, orange, yellow, white, gold
- Earth: brown, green, rust, ochre
- Air: yellow, blue, green, pink, purple
- Water: silver, black, blue, gray
What to Wear
Purple, red, orange, yellow, silver, gold, blue, and white.
Green or anything spring like. Black because it's too serious and more like Scorpio.
Fall designs: leaves, acorns, apples, pumpkins, and corn. Look to patterns on Harry Potter movies, they're often distinct yet unassuming patterns. Opt for triangles and squares.
Spring designs that are in the wrong color hues: bright, neon, or pastel. Avoid circles and dots.
Turquoise, topaz, tanzanite, citrine, and zircon. Colorful gems are a plus. Gold and silver are both fine.
Emeralds and anything green or spring like. Avoid circles and hearts.
Long and wild. You don't want your hair to be too structured. Fall colors are perfect: red, brunette, blonde. Put your hair in a hat or pull it up into a ponytail or bun.
Too short and trim. Don't go for punk styles.
Big sweaters, ponchos, shirts with lots of buttons or ribbons, and shirts with long sleeves. Clothes that make it easy for you to move.
Shirts that focus on cleavage, the neck, or bellybutton. Shirts that are spring like.
Sagittarius rules the thighs, so you need great pants. Corduroy is a plus as well as tweed. Look for brown, red, or purple jeans. Mauve is an excellent color.
Pants that are uncomfortable, like leather. Nothing too tight. You need to be able to run or dance if need be.
Dresses and skirts that have a distinct flow to them, especially below the waistline. Think Hermione's red dress. Wear dresses that both cover and accent your legs.
Dresses that are more about the top half than the bottom.
Whimsical shoes that look like they belong in a fantasy world. Brown shoes are an excellent choice. Anything you'd wear for apple picking or a stay at a woodsy cottage.
Avoid princess-looking or elf-like shoes. You want to look like you're ready for fall, not spring.Sagittarius takes things with a sense of humor. You're not too serious, like Scorpio.
Sagittarius is a yang sign, and this impacts the sort of patterns they lean toward. Yang energy tends to favor distinct lines, and shapes with corners (e.g., squares, rectangles, and triangles). Yang is associated with heat, energy, anger, intensity, saturation, and variety. As such, Sagittarius leans toward patterns that rely on squares, checkers, triangles, and lines—not on circles and ovals.

With their strong fall energy, avoid floral and instead opt for fall leaves, acorns, pumpkins, and apples. You're not trying to be spooky like Scorpio, but you are trying to emulate fall. Stick to faded patterns as opposed to something really bold. Think about Harry Potter characters and what they wear in movies as opposed to the wonderful wardrobe of Noel Fielding (which is perfect for Gemini).
Sagittarius doesn't require makeup as applying it can be time-consuming. The centaur wants to race into action and not get tied down by details! However, if you're going to use makeup, here are some suggestions.
Buy an eyeshadow palette with neutrals, reds, copper tones, orange, white, and gold. You want your eyes to look autumn-kissed, so avoid pastels, neons, and overly saturated colors that you would associate with spring.
Opt for lipstick shades in mauve, red, orange, rust, and beige. Skip pink as it comes off spring-like or Libra-like. You can even skip the lipstick entirely if you like. Blush should also be in shades similar to what I've listed for eyeshadow and lipstick.
Wear brown mascara and brown eyeliner. Try to skip black when possible.
As a wild child, Sagittarius should let their hair do whatever it wants. Let it grow long, braid it, or add some curls and waves. Whatever you choose, it shouldn't look too structured. Fall colors will give it flair—try red, blonde, or brunette. Pull your hair into a bun or ponytail if you need to get it out of your face.
Fire signs are associated with cardio. This sign can be rather sporty, so pull your hair back and focus on your exercise routine.
Sagittarius doesn't show off their mane like Leo. They also don't try to get attention with an asymmetrical design, like Aries who is more punk and edgy. Sagittarius goes with the flow, and their hair indicates that. This is one sign that can get away with messy hair. The less product you put in your hair, the better. Avoid making your hair look tidy. Instead, rock some messy bangs.
Sagittarius accessories should also lean into the same aesthetic as patterns—wear rings and necklaces with square and triangular shapes. Silver, gold, and copper are all good choices. Sagittarius is the type to wear a bunch of random jewelry, almost as if they've robbed a genie's secret trove. Rubies, sapphires, topaz, and tanzanite will all look pretty on a Sagittarius. The only gemstone I would really avoid is emerald. Green doesn't make sense for Sagittarius unless it's really faded and/or yellowish.
Pocket squares will give you a posh sensibility: think Tom Ellis in Lucifer. You want your accessories to drop little hints about your level of sophistication while also integrating pieces that make you seem spontaneous. Sagittarius doesn't take things too seriously, so if you spot something wild and want to wear it, go for it. Bowties, cufflinks, tiaras, and long gloves are on par with the ninth sign of the zodiac.
Watches and pocket watches are definitely your thing. Sagittarius is the type to carry around a fancy timer.
Your wardrobe will have a range to it. One day you could dress like a hippie and the next a suave business elite. Sagittarius likely invented the bohemian chic look. This sign is a trickster, so you have to keep things somewhat unpredictable. Fire signs are flashy, sporadic, and energetic, so don't wear something drab.
Wear long sleeves—sleeves that are wide are a plus! Wear shirts that cover your neck, shoulders, chest, and belly. Your shirts could have little idiosyncratic things on them, like buttons or ribbons. Your shirts should be easy to put on, and you should feel comfortable in what you wear.
Big sweaters are your thing, as are ponchos and wrapping a scarf around your neck. Your coat closet should be full of lovely jackets in different colors.
Athletic Wear: Note that Sagittarius needs clothes that are simple and that they can change into if they decide they want to go on a jog or climb a mountain.
Sagittarius rules the thighs. This means you should have the best pants imaginable. Look for pants in fun fabrics like velvet, tweed, and corduroy. Avoid pants that are too constrictive or have difficult materials like leather. When in doubt, ask yourself if a professor would wear the outfit. Remember, you are plucky—not a punk.
Avoid jeans that are bedazzled or have odd floral patterns. Your jeans should make your legs and butt look good. Colorful jeans are a plus, especially in mauve, purple, red, and brown.
For Sagittarius, the focus for dresses should be on the lower half. Look for dresses that are flowy or have ruffles. You want your dress to have dimension and not look flat and boring.
Long dresses are better than short ones for this sign. Dresses that are too short give off the wrong vibe. You're looking for something that flows, not something that's too tight or short.
One question to ask: Does the dress look more appropriate for fall or spring? If you feel like it's more spring-like, ditch it.
Brown shoes in peculiar shapes are optimal for the Sagittarius look. They like whimsical shapes and designs, but avoid items that are overly cutesy (e.g., shoes with big bows that look like they're for little girls). Also, don't wear something that looks way too serious or edgy, like giant black high heels.
You should have running shoes in fun colors. Sagittarius needs to bolt sometimes, and they like to wear shoes that are comfortable and good for sprinting.
Boots can elevate your outfit and will help put focus on your legs. Consider buying boots in different colors and materials. I think the perfect pair of shoes for Sagittarius are brown ones that look like they were crafted by some woodland creature in a cottage surrounded by autumn trees.
