For thousands of years, wise men used the four elements along with the twelve signs of the zodiac to discern, foretell, and forecast individuals' traits and inclinations. They were able to give new parents insights about who their child would become, what their fortune would be, and what sort of character they would develop depending on when they were born.
Nowadays, these wise men and women are known as astrologists. Some are respected, while others are considered quacks. Not everyone puts stock in astrology, but historically, Christians have been more likely to believe in the stars and what they foretell because of the story of the star that brought the three wise men to Jesus.
Astrology is an ancient science used to determine who we are and where we're going based on our elemental and zodiac signs. Just as each person is born under a star or zodiac, each person is also connected to one of the earth's four elements. There are twelve signs in the zodiac, meaning each of the four elements is associated with three zodiac signs. In this article, we'll learn about these elements and their meanings.
The Earth Elements Associated With Each Zodiac Sign
- Earth: Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn
- Air: Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius
- Water: Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces
- Fire: Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius
Earth Signs: Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn
There are three zodiac signs attached to the element of earth. These earth signs are:
- Taurus: April 20–May 20
- Virgo: August 23–September 22
- Capricorn: December 22–January 19
The earth element can be described as steadfast, stubborn, and determined. When they decide on something, it will take the hand of God to change their minds. Earth signs are protective, supportive, and caring and are most compatible with water signs.
Their stability comes from the earth, and they tend to be very stable. Compared to the other signs, they are less likely to rove and wave. They provide a solid foundation for family and are absolutely reliable.
People born under these signs are often perfectionists. They are hard workers and will break their backs getting the task at hand done. They will not let up until a task is completed to the best of their ability. They are patient, down to earth, and realistic in their thinking and usually have the ability to reason and compromise.
They are not as flexible and sensitive as those born under some of the other elements, but they are empathetic nonetheless. They get pleasure from serving others but want no glory for it.
Because of their rigidity, they will at times pass up opportunities that could make their lives better. They hate change and newness and love to stick with their old ways. They feel content with routine and are not very spontaneous, but they can be unpredictable at times.
Earth signs are worriers and never take things at face value. They are always seeking the truth. If something makes no sense or isn't clear, you can rest assured that they will figure it out. They cannot be easily led or fooled.
Air Signs: Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius
There are three zodiacs attached to the element of air. These signs are:
- Gemini: May 21–June 21
- Libra: September 23–October 23
- Aquarius: January 20–February 18
Air signs like change and cannot stay in one place. Just like their sign, air, they are always moving. They are very unpredictable, and you can never really pin them down. Their personalities and moods change just like the weather. Air signs work well with fire signs, as fire needs air for sustenance.
They love attention and love to talk. They communicate well, make friends easily, and usually gravitate toward public speaking. They tend not to be shy in the slightest.
Air signs are less emotional than water and earth signs and will divert their conversation away from touchy-feely subjects. It's very hard for these people to commit to long-term relationships, as they often hate to be tied down. They tend to be impractical at times, which, in some cases, can make them very unreliable.
Water Signs: Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces
There are three zodiacs attached to the element of water. These signs are:
- Cancer: June 22–July 22
- Scorpio: October 23–November 21
- Pisces: February 19–March 20
Water signs tend to be very empathetic and compassionate people. They are typically quite flexible and can conform easily to the situations they find themselves in. Water signs are emotional and have deep thoughts and feelings. They are expressive, loving, sensitive, and nurturing.
People born under this sign are self-sacrificing and will give their all to please others. Unselfish and kind, they will do anything to make you feel better, sometimes even ignoring their own feelings to their personal detriment.
Water signs are very quiet people and tend to like being alone. Because they are so emotional and dramatic, they are prone to breakdowns, mental illnesses, and substance addictions. They are reclusive by nature, which often means that they become compulsive and fearful.
These signs want to know that they can trust you, and this is a primary requirement in any of their relationships. They are loyal and will never cheat, as their feelings run too deep for that. If you break their trust, it will be hard to get it back.
They blend well with earth signs, who can bring stability, balance, and consistency to their lives. They do not get along as well with fire and air signs, as they find them too unstable and unpredictable.
Fire Signs: Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius
There are three zodiacs attached to the element of fire. These signs are:
- Aries: March 21–April 19
- Leo: July 23–August 22
- Sagittarius: November 22–December 21
Dominant, powerful, and sometimes overbearing, fire signs are born leaders. They are bright and very warm and like to take control. They tend to be in your face, so you always know they are there.
People born under this sign are often accused of being arrogant because of their proud and confident nature. They are always up front at the head of the pack and will not hesitate to tell it to you as it is. They are never secretive and do not know subtlety.
Fires tend to burn in one location only if they have enough material and air to sustain themselves; otherwise, they have to keep moving. Fire signs are the same way. They will settle if they have what they desire; otherwise, you cannot contain them.
Fire emits energy, and so do people born of this sign. They give off their energy and are considered motivators, though they may not be particularly sympathetic or sensitive.
If you know someone who is uncaring and likes to use and walk over people, chances are you are in the company of a fire sign. They have no patience for weak, emotional, or needy people. They tend to be selfish and all about themselves. They may use their family or co-workers to get ahead.
They are compatible with air signs because fire needs air to survive. Air signs provide a needed boost to their ego in the same way air provides oxygen to fire.
They are usually not too keen on things of an intellectual nature. They don't like communication and may try to suppress your thoughts and emotions if they can't handle them. They are not particularly supportive, and they may try to climb over you to reach the top.

Do You Know People Born of These Elements?
I must tell you that I know people belonging to all four elements and they are just as the signs say. However, a person's personality is dependent on many factors, such as genetics and socialization. As such, people often have characteristics that are not consistent with their element. Are your characteristics consistent with your earth element?
