How to Interpret Your Horoscope
Eastern and Western astrology are different. In fact, Eastern astrology should not even be called astrology because it has nothing to do with the stars. Whereas Western astrology is based on the movement of a 3000-year-old star map, Chinese astrology is based on the life force—commonly called Qi—on Earth.
Chinese astrology comprises a 60-year cycle—five of which belong to each animal. For example, there is the year of the metal ox, the year of the wood ox, the year of air ox, the year of the earth ox, and the year of the fire ox. Wood, Fire, Earth, Air, and Metal are elements with different qualities. They influence the life force (the 12 animal signs) of the particular year. So, for the year 2021, the qualities of metal (firmness, rigidity, persistence, strength, and determination) are added to the attributes of the ox (strong, reliable, fair, conscientious, calm, patient, methodical, trustworthy and opinionated).
Those animal signs that are compatible with ox qualities will work well in 2021. Those animal signs that clash with the attributes of the ox will not do well in 2021.
If your sign in not compatible with the metal ox, then it's best to take a backseat for the year. Either that, or try to develop the characteristics of the ox. They're not a bad bunch of characteristics, and they can serve you well in the years ahead.
Biden and Trump
The year of the metal ox begins on February, 12th, 2021.
Most people will want to know how Biden and Trump stand when it comes to Chinese astrology. How their paths turn out will affect many other lives.
Joe Biden is born in the year of the water horse while Donald Trump is born in the year of the fire dog.
Joe Biden's water characteristics (frank, insightful, modest, observant, objective, interested, cautious, sensible, and lucid) are compatible with the metal attributes (firmness, rigidity, persistence, strength, and determination) of the metal ox year. Both metal and water are opportunistic and they work well together. So, Biden's water sign will work well with the year's metal tendencies.
There is a clash, however. Biden's horse will not do well in the year of the ox, and though the elements are compatible, they are not the dominant energies. The dominant energies are the animal signs.
Biden will find himself constantly frustrated as plans he wants to put into motion are either stopped or slowed. They will be put to extreme examination by all parties, so much so, that they might never get off the ground. The year of the
Donald Trump's dog is compatible with the ox year. There is a strong chance that he sails through 2021 even without the presidency, and that he comes out smelling like roses. The tiger year in 2022 will also work well for Trump.
Biden has chosen Kamala Harris who is born in the year of the dragon. Dragon and ox energy don't work so well together.
America was born in 1776 - the year of the fire monkey. The monkey does well with the ox, so outside of the two candidates involved with the election, it will not be a bad year, although all things will move forward very slowly. In order to beat the virus, it is going to have to involve discipline with small steps. So long as all plans are systematic, objective, and put into operation without too much speed, some good changes could take place.

Generally speaking, 2021 is going to be an uphill battle for all concerned.
How Qi Is Valued
The Chinese determine all major decisions on the birth sign and the energy of the year. They will delay having children, starting a business, moving homes, and more, simply to be in an auspicious year. They have been doing that for three or four thousand years. There has to be a reason.
Economic Landscape for 2021: Year of the Metal Ox
Those born in the year of the horse (Biden) will do well financially in the year of the ox. So it’s possible that should Biden become president, while he probably won’t be able to change the system as quickly as he would like, economic confidence would be restored, and the economy will move forward.
As the metal element also indicates change, it is possible that while the economy picks up in 2021, there will be changes to the economic system. These may involve things like the government making welfare payments to those who have been without a job for some time. It might also call for non-traditional economists to put forth ideas, and to move in a direction that is somewhat different to the past half century.
Because the energy of the ox is slow, ponderous, and cautious, while these plans will be raised, and while there will be the desire to implement them, they might take a while to put into place.
Essentially those born in the year of the monkey, horse, boar, and rabbit, will do better financially in the year of the metal ox. As America was ‘born’ in the year of the monkey, this definitely indicates that the economy will improve throughout 2021.
Because the ox is a slow, peaceful animal, economic prosperity will depend on the year being slow and peaceful. Should there be war, anger, and any sort of disturbance, then money will not be so easy to find. Even those military companies that flourish financially during times of war will find that the money wouldn’t flow as it has done during previous wars.
In order to determine what will happen to each different type of life force, the life force of the year is compared to the life force of the year the person is born into. Below is the horoscope (which means prediction) for 2021.
Difference Between Chinese and Western Astrology
While Western astrology purports to tell the future based on the movement of the stars, Chinese astrology does no such thing. What it does is examine the characteristics of the life force (Qi or Chi) of a particular year and compare that with the characteristics of the Qi of people involved.
So, instance, how would a person born in the year of the fire dog respond to the influence produced by the life force in a year of the dragon? What would the effect of the year of the pig be on someone born in the year of the rabbit?
In other words, unlike Western astrology, Chinese astrology does not foretell the future. Instead it determines what the general weather will be like and how each of the animal signs will fare in that weather. Those who are aware of the stumbling blocks can avoid them.
A Quick Review of Chinese Astrology
The Chinese believe that there is a life force (Qi) on earth that infiltrates all that are alive. This life force has a 60-year cycle, and each of the years has different characteristics. When a person is born, they take on the particular characteristics which were present in the Qi (or Chi) of that year.
So, for instance, in the year of the earth dog, every child that is born between the 16th February, 2018 and the 4th February, 2019 will have the characteristics of the dog. This is called the year sign, and you will determine your horoscope by reading what the energy is like for your year sign. If you do not know your year year sign, you can find it here. Your horoscope can be read towards the bottom of this article.
Everybody also has a rising sign (otherwise known as your secret animal) depending on the hour they were born. The rising sign will reveal who you are at your core (equivalent to the moon in Western astrology).
You also have an inner animal (as per the list below). This determines who you will grow into in later years. When you are old, you will have more of the characteristics of your inner animal than your year animal.
February 4th — March 5th: Tiger
March 6th — April 4th: Rabbit
April 5th — May 4th: Dragon
May 5th — June 5th: Snake
June 6th — July 6th: Horse
July 7th — August 6th: Goat
August 7th — September 7th: Monkey
September 8th — October 7th: Rooster
October 8th — November 6th: Dog
November 7th — December 6th: Pig
December 7th — January 5th: Rat
January 6th — February 3rd: Ox
So, for instance, I was born in the year of the rabbit with dragon rising and an inner monkey. I was also born in the metal year. When looking at my horoscope, I will look at my year animal which has the strongest influence. I will aIso, however, give a quick read-through of the horoscope for my rising sign and my inner animal. This will not be a huge influence, but it’s good to know what all influences are for the coming year. For my own horoscope, therefore, I would look at the rabbit as I was born in the year of the rabbit. I would then glance at the dragon (rising sign) and the monkey (my inner animal). This way, I can get a feel for the year ahead.
This brings us to the elements of the Chinese zodiac. There are five elements — wood, metal, earth, fire, and water. The 60-year Qi cycle is composed of five series of twelve (there are twelve animals) years. Each time an animal year is repeated, it has a different element. Elements tell you more about your characteristics.
You can determine your element by the number of the year you were born in. If it ends in 0 or 1, for instance, you would be metal. Another example would be that 2018 ends in an 8, so it would be an earth year.
0 or 1, you are a metal element.
2 or 3, you are a water element.
4 or 5, you are a wood element.
6 or 7, you are a fire element.
8 or 9, you are an earth element.
All this information has a greater or lesser influence on the current life-force year. So if you are born in the year of the wood monkey, and 2021 is the year of the metal ox, you would figure out how the year of the metal ox would impact on your own energy. The methodology would rather be like figuring out how, if the prediction was for rain, you would function if you were cycling outside.
The Chinese zodiac does not foretell the future. It tells you what the energy of that year is going to be like, and whether your animal energy is compatible with it or not. When they are not compatible, it is best to lie low. When they are compatible, it’s time to stretch your wings.

Year of the Rat
The rat will have a fast-moving year with events ranging from highly positive to extremely negative. Those in business may well face financial loses, and this would be the same for those wishing to start a new business. It is not a good year to spend lavishly or to invest in property and other capital purchases. Those in creative fields may see either gentle growth in their careers or giant leaps forward. This includes writers, artists, actors, and any of the more artistic pursuits. Those working for others will be rewarded for their loyalty and persistence.
The rat will need to avoid discussions and disagreements which will, under the influence of the dog year, grow heated quite rapidly.
It is not a good year for love and romance, and the focus may need to be on friendship with the hope that it will grow into something else in another year. Even those in existing relationships may find that arguments increase and that it would be better to tone down the relationship to one that is more platonic.
Year of the Ox
The ox is uncomplicated and direct in interactions with others. They are also conservative and work hard. They are compatible with rat, snake, and the rooster. They do well in years of the ox, rat, snake, and rooster.
The more disciplined you are, the better your year is going to be. Relationship will run smoothly and peacefully, and your money star is rising.
Your bugbear that will prevent you from taking advantage of the lucky energy that is yours this year will be your quiet and introspective nature. It’s probably better for you to practice reaching out to others more.
This will not only open doors for you, but ensure that you remain lucky for the year!
Year of the Tiger
Those born in this year are confident and independet. They can also be a little pedantic and set in their ways. They are compatible with the dragon, horse, and pig/boar. Their happy years are the years of the tiger, dragon, horse, and pig/boar.
The 2021 year will bring changes and new learning. You will need to be willing to go with the flow, and be open to doing things a bit differently. With the ox energy impacting on your tiger qi, you won’t quite have the creativity you normally have during other years. You will need to accept that. No use railing against the year’s energy.
It’s a good year to focus on making plans for your financial future as well as put the infrastructure of your lifestyle under the microscope and see if it works well for you. With the year of the year of the tiger in 2022, it’s a good time to take care of all this, so that next year everything will be in place, and you can expect the best.
Year of the Rabbit
Rabbits are noble and elegant, and they love to stay home and count their money. They get along with sheep/goat, monkey, dog, and pig/boar. Naturally, their best years are those of the sheep/goat, the dog, the rabbit, and the pig/boar. Interestingly, while the rabbit gets along with those born in the year of the sheep/goat, monkey, dog, and pig/boar, those born in the year of the horse and monkey also gravitate towards the rabbit.
The rabbit will have a lucky year in 2021, especially in terms making money. It will be a more creative year than normal in terms of art.
Children might be wanted, it’s best to wait until 2022. If you don’t have a partner, you will be lucky this year in finding more than one person who is compatible with you.
The rabbit is normally finicky, so combined with the ox year energy, it could be hard to move forward at some points. However, once the mind is made up to move forward, there will be no stopping rabbit.
The rabbit needs to guard against health threats, so it’s particularly important to wear a mask. This is a year when staying home will not be seen as anti-social.
Year of the Dragon
Dragons are ethical, lucky, intellectual, with a tendency towards arrogance, it’s the most desired sign for the Chinese. Dragons are compatible with rooster, rat, and monkey. Naturally, their best years dragon, rooster, rat, and monkey years.
This is through and through a career year for those born in the dragon. They will be lucky, and it will be difficult to put a foot wrong. It will also be a good year in terms of love and relationships, with new friendships being formed.
Opportunities may come from foreign countries, and while this would normally be a good thing, don’t plan to travel until 2022. Try to do everything through the web.
Year of the Snake
Sly more than wise, they do particularly well as authors. This is probably because they have a deep understanding of human nature. They are compatible with the dragon and the rooster, and they do well in the year of the snake, dragon, and rooster.
The snake is in for a really good year. Things move along at a sedate pace, and the snake has time to chew on the best route forward. The ox year provides the perfect climate for wisdom to flourish.
Money also arrives when the hard work has been put in. It won’t be a stressful year, but there may be long hours. It’s also probably a good idea to remain with your current company, as the metal (as in metal ox year) can provide unexpected surprises, and you don’t want that.
Things might take a dip towards the end of the year, so plan your year well.
Year of the Horse
They’re popular, high energy, have a lot of friends (naturally), and are easy going. They are best friends with the tiger, sheep, and rabbit, and naturally their best years are the years of the horse, sheep/goat, tiger, and rabbit.
The lovely, dynamic horse is going to have to learn to slow down fast if the year of the ox isn’t to drive him/her crazy!
There will be multiple plans, but all of them will meet a stone wall, and the only way past the wall is to see the wall, negotiate slowly about opening a path through the wall, and then proceeding forward — at a slow pace.
Obstacles will abound.
Fortunately, the horse is such a clever fellow that a way around the obstacles will be found — possibly in 2022.
Year of the Sheep
Those born in this year are clever and kind. Basically, they’re really nice people, and they do well with horse, rabbit, and pig. Their best years are the year of the sheep/goat, horse, rabbit, and pig/boar.
The sheep finally has time to get things into place. Generally disorganized, the year of the ox has such a slow, mild pace, that even sheep can sit down and reorganize their lives.
It’s one of those times when the goat/sheep might want to focus on improving their living conditions, exploring the arts, opening a blog, or even investing in a small business. These choices will lead to something positive.
It’s probably not a good year for being too involved with others, so socializing party-style is not going to work in your favor.
Year of the Monkey
They’re fast and versatile. They also tend to honesty and they love wealth. They gravitate towards those born in the years of the ox and rabbit. Their best years are the years of the monkey, ox, and rabbit.
Pigs are also in for a good career year. This will involve not only learning new skills, but possibly also earning more money and looking at entrepreneurial possibilities. All good.
That said, the following years may eat up money, and if the boar can do so, it’s best to invest funds in a savings account.
Your love life is going to be all over town this year with many different partners. You are not in the right place for monogamy right now.
Year of the Rooster
Conservative, punctual, and loyal, the rooster has very traditional values. They also tend to be attractive as people and are fast friends with those born in the year of the ox and the snake. Their best years are the years of the rooster, ox, and snake.
It’s not going to be your best year, but there are high points. One of those is that your relationship with family and friends will become much better. You will be closer to them than ever before. Your luck will come to you through family and friends this year.
Throughout the year, you will be thinking of changing your job. It’s best to do that in 2022.
Year of the Dog
Despite this being your animal sign, you will be lucky one day and not so lucky the next day. However, with your friendly nature and your capacity to wish good for all, you will quickly be able to turn difficult situations your way. The exception to this is if you allow your emotions to get out of control and ‘bite’ the people involved in disputes. In this case, things could go very badly for you.
Financial fraud may come back to haunt you, so wherever you are and whatever you do, it’s best to stick to the rules this year. It’s also best not to expand your business or ask your boss for a raise or promotion. Don’t go for broke, and don’t trust the promises of those who would take what you have. Dogs are far too trusting! That said, you could make a lot of money in 2018 and lose it just as quickly.
As you have a capacity to be overly emotional, and as this year will emphasize anger and fights, you’re going to have to practice self-control. The least said, the soonest situations will be mended.
The best industries for you to focus on this year will be the arts and entertainment.
One of your big challenges this year is to look after your health. You may suffer a breakdown or an accident of some sort. This could be expensive. Take care to do everything diligently, slowly, and with care.
In terms of love and romance, it will be a rocky road. It’s best to put out the paw of friendship than to insist on your own way. Love will not remain if you insist on dominating your partner or want your own way. There could also be a marriage on the cards for those who are single.
Year of the pig
The pig could get a little richer, plus be blessed with auspicious get-togethers. Because all outcomes are dependent on the events that preceded them, however, this will only come to a pass if the porker behaves himself and considers the Qi energy of the dog year.
Employees will benefit if they show good skills and good relationships with other members of staff. Businessmen, likewise. The clue is that personal relationship will play a decisive factor in wealth creation. You will need to work hard.
Piglets in love can look forward to marriage, and those who are currently single will easily find a mate. Disputes, arguments quarrels, etc. will make it difficult to progress, though, so once more, it is a year of self-control and slow pacing.
Getting Through 2021 - A Very Slow Year
There are some general steps that everyone can take to prepare for 2021. It will be a very frustrating year for many. Urgent change that is needed will not come.
In order to make the best of it, here are some pointers.
- Don't expect much. Make one or two goals and stick to them. Don't deviate. Just keep going, knowing that plodding along is the name of the game for 2021.
- Downsize as much as possible. This will make the year easier as you will have less to look after, will spend less, and can invest more of your energy into what needs to be done.
- Learn to walk, not run. If you run, you will trip up. Go slowly and carefully. This will pay the most dividents.
- Along the way, enjoy the slow pace. We can all learn a lot more when we stop to notice the things we missed when we were running.

Yup. I wanted it to be detailed so that people understood how it worked. That means they can also work out more for themselves, if they want to. I think 2021 is going to be uphill all the way - I'm hoping otherwise. :)
Peggy Woods from Houston, Texas on November 18, 2020:
You certainly put a lot of work into writing this article. Let's hope 2021 is a better year for most than 2020. At least with vaccines coming, the pandemic should not do as much damage. Things will probably move more slowly than people would wish. We have a tall mountain to climb to get back to what was considered normal just a short time ago.
Tessa Schlesinger (author) on November 18, 2020:
Thanks. Much appreciated. It took me a long time to do the art, but I reckoned that I use them for articles about Chinese astrology, so the investment was worth it. :) Love your comment about faith! :)
Doris James MizBejabbers from Beautiful South on November 17, 2020:
How interesting. I've heard of Chinese astrology, but I've never been able to figure it out. I believe the easterners are just wired differently from us westerners, and that is not putting them down. I think each of us has our own place. Proof, ha! Who among us westerners is so arrogant as to demand proof when our own organized religions tell us that we must "have faith" in things we can't see. Good article, Tess, interesting and your graphics are colorful.
Tessa Schlesinger (author) on November 17, 2020:
Let me tell you a story.
I was 42 years old (that was a long while ago). I was at a new job, and it was my birthday. One of the girls told me to go and ask the telecomms engineer to do my chart. I told her astrology was a load of bull. She said to go speak to him anyway.
So I did.
I said, "How can you be an engineer and believe this bs?"
He said "Do you know your time, place, and date of birth?"
I said yes.
He typed it into a desktop in front of me, and out come 50 pages. I read them. This is what it said.
"This is the a rare chart - the chart of a child prodigy, gifted to the point of genius in writing. Also a connoisseur of the arts, Very attractive with a lovely speaking voice." There were four or five aother areas where it mentioned my talents. It was a lot.
Now I don't know how many child prodigies you know, and I certainly don't claim I was one. However, my IQ has been measured at between 25 points above genius to off-the-graph. I have been published now for 60 years - first being published at about 10 years old. If you read my reviews, people tell me I'm very, very talented at it. I have also stopped traffic with my looks for a lifetime - even now at 70, I'm still called beautiful, and I look 20 years younger than I am.
A doctor (and I have the documentation) tested me in my mid-40s. She said I fitted every rare category she tested for, that I had the highest creativity score she had seen in 30 years, that my writing was on par with the guy who had won the most literary prizes in the world.
What the chart did not say was that I was autistic - I have Asperger's.
That said, my chart is so rare that for it to mention the specific things that doctors have tested me for is quite unusual, don't you think?
I was curious, and I spent 18 months doing charts for people - about 180 in total, I think. I did the actual chart using computer software. Some people I knew - some I didn't. They all said the characters were very true. Perhaps they weren't, but mine ;was pretty close - about 95% accurate.
Can I explain it? Nope.
Do I care? Nope.
Do articles like this get read? Yes.
Do I earn a few pennies from them? Yes.
Do I explain exactly how the Chinese arrived at these conclusions, what is involved, etc.? Yes.
Are people free to believe or disbelieve it? Yes.
Any other questions?
Jay C OBrien from Houston, TX USA on November 17, 2020:
Much work went into the writing of this, but is it true? Is this just a Projection of self? Do you also believe in Tarot, Mediums, etc? What do you believe in and what not? Proof?
