How does an Aries personality differ from the rest of the zodiac signs? What distinct characteristics make an Aries special? Let's find out:

The First Fire

Aries is the first fire sign of the zodiac and the name Aries itself means, "Ram," which is the animal that represents Aries. The ram is significant because Aries is associated with drive, determination, and fierceness.

Aries is also the first sign of spring which gives the already bold Aries the distinction of being the sign most full of life and vitality just like Spring.

In classic Greek Mythology, Aries is represented by the story of, "The Golden Fleece." Legend has it that when King Athamus of Boetia took a second wife, Ino, she was extremely jealous and resentful of his existing children — especially his son, Phrixus.

During a terrible drought, Ino instructed a messenger to say that he had been told that Phrixus had to be sacrificed if the people were to escape starvation. King Athamus agreed to the sacrifice but, at the very last minute, the boy and his sister, Helle, were saved by a magnificent ram with a golden fleece, sent by Zeus.

Unfortunately, as the ram crossed the narrow stretch of water between Europe and Asia, Helle fell to her death (the straits are still known as Hellespont).

Phrixus was carried safely to the land of Colchis. He gave thanks for his deliverance by sacrificing the ram to Zeus and giving its golden fleece to King Aeetes. The fleece was then guarded by a fierce dragon who never slept.

The Personality of Aries

An Aries personality is a combination of intense drive and volatile temperament. An Aries will not hesitate to dive right into any endeavor without a second thought but once that thrill is gone or things become too involved, an Aries is likely to jump ship.

An Aries craves excitement, newness, and spontaneity but will soon lose interest if boredom sets in. As the first sign of Spring, an Aries likes to be the first one to take the plunge but doesn't necessarily stick around to finish things off. This can be both an admirable trait and a weakness for the bold Aries.

The go-getting attitude of an Aries can certainly be handy but if there is no follow-through, it's not much use in the long run. This is where an Aries personality can seek improvement with maintaining consistency and overall effort.

One of the main issues an Aries will have is not taking well to authority or being easily offended by negative comments and criticism. These reactions can detract from the Aries personality because it can lead to childish or moody behavior, often over petty disputes.

What most people love the most about this engaging fire sign is their independence and ambition. An Aries can be a loyal, communicative friend or lover and can sustain long-lasting relationships when they find the right companion.

Though being self-indulgent is one of the downfalls of an Aries, one cannot help but be drawn into their strong energy and passion. If an Aries can work on getting over their need to be entertained at all times they can find long-lasting fulfillment on a variety of levels.

As a lover, Aries can be fickle depending on the situation. Winning the love of an Aries will be a love never forgotten and, generally, it takes a person more grounded or self-confident to put up with the sometimes over-the-top Aries.

An Aries can be prone to temper tantrums and impulsiveness but is also a fantastic optimist, planner, and motivator. An Aries is the often the driving force behind new ideas, competitive edginess, or physical excellence. Many times, an Aries personality can be found working in the entertainment industry, business, or leading the way in innovation.

Planet, Stones, & Colors

The ruling planet of Aries is Mars. This red planet is the second smallest planet in the solar system. The gemstones most associated with Aries are aquamarine, diamond, amethyst, red coral, bloodstone, and apache tears (rounded pebbles of obsidian).

The primary colors for an Aries sign are scarlet red, hot pink or vibrant orange. The fact that these colors are lucky for an Aries should come as no surprise considering their exuberant personality.

The Tarot Card of Aries

The tarot card associated with Aries is the Emperor card.

Besides the Death or Devil tarot cards, The Emperor card is one of the most powerful in the tarot deck.

This card is associated with creating structure, power, success, and getting results.

Since the sign of Aries represents physical action and vitality, it's no surprise that such a majestic and strong card should symbolize its personality.

In the image on the Emperor card itself, the emperor is holding a ball in one hand, which is meant to represent the world and power over the world.

This tarot card signifies decision-making, ruling strength, authority and the manifesting of desires.
