Are Scorpios Evil?
Misconceptions About Scorpio People
During my years of interest, study, and teaching of astrology, I found that people are most fascinated with the Scorpio zodiac sign. This is a particularly challenging sign, as Scorpios tend to be very successful and driven. Scorpios are also quite mysterious and we know about their tremendous sex appeal! But some of them cause their own problems because of binge drinking, drugs, and ill-advised sex or hookups, brought on by the extreme nature of their relationships and the personal pain they often experience.
Lately clients have asked me questions which indicate they have many misconceptions about the traits of these complex people. By now I thought I had heard practically everything. I receive questions from worried clients who are afraid of the Scorpio children, family members, lovers, and coworkers in their lives, and wrongly assume Scorpios are bad or even evil people.
People truly seem to think Scorpios are capable of extreme cruelty, fly into furies of crazed jealousy, or are criminally insane. I have written hundreds of instructional articles covering all zodiac signs, and nobody learned anything like that from what I’ve taught. Charles Manson was a Scorpio, but so is Bill Gates. We can find positive and negative examples of human behavior in every zodiac sign, so it bothers me to see Scorpios being so maligned.
An Evil Character
I have a fictional story to share, about a child whose behavior is truly terrifying. Many of her exploits could be blamed on Scorpio traits by a person looking for a reason to believe a Scorpio person in their own life is very bad. I am sharing this tale along with excuses for Scorpio behaviors interspersed with the fiction, in italics, to give readers examples of false information circulating regarding Scorpios.
There was once a young, troubled girl named Rhoda. Her classmates kept their distance from Rhoda; they sensed something different about her, and found her to be intimidating. Scorpios sometimes come off as cold or unfeeling. They are masters at hiding their real emotions.
Rhoda’s classmate Claude mysteriously drowned at a school picnic which they both attended. Rhoda’s Mom, Christine, thought her daughter seemed indifferent to her classmate’s death. She later learned Rhoda lost a penmanship contest to Claude, so didn’t receive a medal she coveted. Rhoda believed she should have won. We know Scorpios are very competitive! It was later discovered that Rhoda was the last person seen with Claude before his death.
Do Scorpios Care What Others Think?
Christine began to evaluate other troubling behaviors she noticed about her daughter. Rhoda once begged her parents for a dog, but got bored with him. He “accidentally” fell out the window and died. An elderly neighbor promised to will a necklace to Rhoda, then suddenly took a fatal fall down the stairs. Rhoda was soon seen wearing the necklace she so badly wanted. When a Scorpio wants something, they can focus on it like a laser beam! Rhoda had also been expelled from school for lying to teachers, and was described as a mean, self sufficient child who played by her own rules. Scorpios are nonconformists who don’t really care what others think of them.
Leroy was the maintenance man for the apartment complex where Rhoda lived. He saw through her façade and realized Rhoda was different than she pretended. Scorpios can read your mind and be whatever they think you want to see. But Leroy underestimated Rhoda, and teased her. He told Rhoda that blood could still be found on Claude even after the crime. Rhoda was terrified that her treachery would be discovered, so locked Leroy into his room after setting his bed on fire. Scorpios love to plot revenge against other people.
Christine later confronted Rhoda, but she acted innocent, lied, and blamed everyone except herself for the deaths which befell her victims. Scorpios have a dark side, but how dark? Attempting to keep Rhoda from killing anyone else, Christine gave her a large dose of sleeping pills, hoping she would overdose. Then Christine shot herself in the head.
Christine died, but a nosy neighbor intervened and saved Rhoda. Christine’s husband returned from a business trip, and thought Christine suffered a nervous breakdown. Unfortunately, Christine never explained her revelations regarding Rhoda to him, leaving Rhoda free to kill again. So Scorpios are evil. Rhoda’s birthday was never revealed to the reader. But anyone so twisted had to be Scorpio, right?
Scorpio Traits Are Vastly Exaggerated
Rhoda’s fictional character is from a book entitled The Bad Seed, written in 1954 by an American writer named William March. I needed to illustrate through this fiction that although clients write me to discuss problems less serious than murder, many have terrible misconceptions about how wicked Scorpio people are. They greatly exaggerate what lengths a Scorpio will go to in competitions, how insanely jealous they act during a love affair, or just how dangerous a Scorpio scorned will actually go to hurt someone for a real or perceived wrong. So I’d like to discuss some major complaints I hear from people who have challenging relationships with a Scorpio person in their lives.
Many are parents who think their badly behaved or uncontrollable children are like that because they are Scorpio. Now, all Scorpio children are born nonconformists, and this will present at a young age. Many of these people are helicopter parents who force their children into so many activities; these children are merely tired and overwhelmed. A Scorpio child needs routines and boundaries. But they are creative and intelligent, so need time to dream and play with their peers. If your Scorpio child shows an interest in something, encourage it, they have insatiable curiosity. These kids also need to be left alone at times to use their artistic imaginations in a safe space.
Some parents are competing with other parents like themselves or perhaps trying to live vicariously through their children. Maybe one parent loves team sports, but the son loves to paint. Maybe one loves to cook and the daughter is fascinated with engineering. Each person is an individual and has their own talents or skills. Your child will be easier to manage if you respect their individuality. Buy books and discuss them, go to museums, and engage these kids in clever activities. They are smart and driven, often misbehaving because they are bored. Even young Scorpios are old souls who have strong likes and dislikes. I hate to break the news, but you aren’t going to change that. A Scorpio wins every time, even a young one.
Scorpio Teens Experience Difficult Times
Some frightened parents have decided that Scorpio Moon sign teens, in particular, hate their mothers. (Actually Capricorn Moon sign kids have issues with Mom, but they don’t hate her.) We all know teens and parents go through rocky times, even when they have great relationships. It just goes with the territory of growing up and becoming independent. A Scorpio teen is an old soul who knows themselves very well. This kid can argue a point better than Alan Dershowitz, so keep your wits about you! Even though you will be grinning behind their back as you say “no” to their premise, the closing argument is well thought out and actually makes sense.
A Scorpio teen or young adult is an individualist who sees life in definite terms. They may love and respect parents, but are going to do what they want, whether you like it or not. Most teens go through stages, and will test your patience to maximum levels. Scorpio teens have this down to a science. Hang in there, and keep talking. This period will pass. Then a more problematic one will begin. Get used to it. Make it clear that your teen can come to you with any problem. Just remember that old saying, “When kids are little they have little problems, and when they get bigger, they have bigger problems.” Raising a Scorpio is not an easy task.
I can’t emphasize how important it is for parents to stay aware of current issues and what kinds of difficulties teens may be facing in their everyday lives. Don’t forget how secretive they are. Their problems are likely to be a hell of lot more difficult than what you went through in your teen years. Welcome to the 21st century. And be forewarned, Scorpio young people go through a lot more confusion regarding sexual issues and orientation than other signs, so try to keep an open mind. Their teen years are not going to resemble yours in the slightest. If you are a good parent and your teen feels they can talk to you, just listen, even if you are stunned by what you hear. Then take small steps and see how you can help, or refer them to someone who can if it’s too much for you.
Scorpio Love Runs Hot and Cold
Let’s move onto love relationships. This accounts for a large percentage of my mail and astrology clientele, and once again, everyone seems to have an impossible to understand Scorpio in their lives. If you are madly in love with a Scorpio person and have lived with them for a year or two, you should know this person quite well. Why don’t you know if you are compatible as a couple, and why are you asking me? Obviously, then, the answer is no. If you don’t get along and don’t feel a spark of romance around this person, there’s no love there. Move on.
I often hear that one of the partners has either thrown the other out of the house more than once, or even that one partner is physically abusing the other. This is an ongoing thing. Why are you still holding on and pretending the other person has feelings for you? They don’t. They asked you to leave, and are hurting you. They aren’t holding in smoldering passions for you because they can’t understand their extreme emotions. This is delusional thinking on your part. Your Scorpio partner wants to end an unsatisfying relationship. When a Scorpio is over you, they won’t look back. So, sashay away! Stop rationalizing they still love you by over exaggerating Scorpio traits which are not even true to the sign. Face the truth. If someone assaults you once, leave immediately. This person is dangerous.
Scorpio Sun and Scorpio Moon Are Not the Same Thing
I have another thing on my mind. The Sun and Moon are luminaries, but for the sake of simplicity in astrology, we say there are ten planets in the zodiac. A Scorpio Sun and a Scorpio Moon are two distinct and different placements entirely, and I’ve written clear, interpretive articles explaining this. The difference between each is explained in depth. Please stop blaming emotional problems on Scorpio Moon sign people. While it is correct the Moon rules a person’s emotional makeup, this is not to be used interchangeably with a Sun sign. The Sun sign is the basic way a person expresses their energies and creative drives to grow and develop as an individual. The other eight planets can be in any zodiac sign too, so working with only a Sun or Moon explains little about your “problem” Scorpio anyway.
“A man who has not passed through the inferno of his passions has never overcome them.”

True Scorpio Traits
Let’s address the positive and negative traits of Scorpio Sun sign people, because apparently you need a refresher course. Or you are reading other astrologers. Gasp, how could you? I’m deeply wounded. But I have a Scorpio ascendant, I will prevail. Scorpio is a sign of intensity and extremes, not interested in anything except the naked truth. They understand that underneath the polite facade of society there lies the real world. It’s raw, untamed, and sometimes frightening.
There are three symbols for Scorpios; the first one is the snake. If you hurt a Scorpio, you will be stung by their sarcastic tongue. They believe in retribution too, but it may not be immediate. Scorpios are patient, like The Godfather. They may just ignore you and treat you with disdain. But they always win, so learn to choose your battles. Scorpios can soar like the eagle and see everything with their piercing vision, choosing to rise above pettiness and revenge. The phoenix symbolizes Scorpio the best, because these people can live through unthinkably difficult circumstances and rise from the ashes renewed, as better and more evolved people. They have an amazing abundance of strength and purpose during the most severe periods of soul testing, and will endure it all to transform their lives again.
Scorpios like to live intense lives, and often this causes them to go to extremes in behavior. They are courageous and want to live interesting lives, but this doesn’t mean they are fearless. But they are driven to that intensity and want to see the truth, no matter how daunting it can be. What lies underneath the surface? That’s what a Scorpio person needs to know. All those secrets need to be uncovered, and the taboos need to be broken. These are naturally suspicious people, always seeking the truth. But if they don’t like what they find, can become obsessed and destructive.
Scorpio Vulnerability Requires Strength
Scorpios don’t like to feel vulnerable or powerless. But they will help a friend or loved one cope during such times with the utmost tenderness. Your Scorpio friend is very loyal and will be there for you at the worst times in your life. Your secrets will be kept, although a Scorpio won’t reveal all of theirs. This is true in a romantic relationship too. Scorpios will always listen, and can read you like a book anyway. But they will always have secrets of their own and may not choose to reveal them. Learn to accept it and don’t take it personally.
Many Scorpios look for jobs on the front lines to be near exciting action. They can be police, paramedics, counselors, fire fighters, martial artists, or founders of rehabilitation facilities. These are people who can handle pressure. Being in crisis situations helps a Scorpio to be able to process what is difficult and taboo, because it makes life less frightening to them. They are also likely to work as accountants or life insurance agents, as the 8th house rules Scorpio, and one of its issues is money of the partner.
When a couple marries, they must decide how to manage their funds together, whose health insurance they will be on, how much life insurance they need, and if they die, who will get their property? So Scorpios will make wills at younger ages than most people. My late husband and I both were of Scorpio ascendants, and wrote wills by the time we were in our late twenties. That 8th house is about more than sex and death, so stop thinking that’s all that matters to a Scorpio.
Scorpios are intimately acquainted with death and the dying process, often working in the funeral business as morticians, or as death doulas to assist others at the end of their lives. Scorpios can be gentle and soothing. Just as they are fascinated with sex, death is another ultimate mystery in life, and Scorpio wants those answers. This person understands every moment can be their last, a loved one could be lost at any time, but faces it no matter how painful, because to overcome the darkness, you have to experience it.
Scorpios Are Driven to Extremes
Scorpios are jealous, possessive, obsessive, and have strong sexual urges. The only way they can live is to totally consume life and let life totally consume them. So they take situations, beliefs, and actions to their extremes. This sign’s natives are driven and have an emotional and mental hunger to merge with what they desire, whether it’s a person, experience, or talent. To merge with something and therefore wholly possess it and forever be transformed by it is the Scorpio way.
Scorpios want to get to the bottom of everything through investigation, research, and by asking the hard questions. They are suspicious of light-hearted fluff and too serious to take it at face value. If a Scorpio fails to express an opinion (which is rare), it’s because they are blunt and may not want to hurt your feelings. They don’t want to sugarcoat anything and won’t humor you. So they often keep thoughts to themselves. They make judgments and assessments in secret, but will question everyone about their opinions.
Most Scorpios have magnetic and lovely eyes. As they look at you, those can be the most beautiful eyes you ever saw. They can be so kind and tender with those they love. Then try to talk them into doing something they don’t want to do, and all of a sudden you will feel a cold chill. Anybody who knows a Scorpio person has experienced being frozen in that icy glare.
Scorpios Don't Apologize for Who They Are
Scorpio people are very spiritual and often engage in studies about spiritual realms and metaphysical topics. They are very psychic and often know what others are thinking. If you are in a serious relationship with one, you don’t have to speak every thought; you will begin to communicate by telepathy. Scorpios love any subject or person who is mysterious and out of the ordinary. Being loved by a person so intelligent, spiritual, and passionate is not something to take lightly. So don’t ever toy with those intense emotions, and you will have a loving partner or friend for life. Many people never get to experience that, so never take it for granted.
So you don’t need to be afraid of a Scorpio person, they are certainly not evil and take a bad rap for that. They have a low tolerance for nonsense, don’t like to be lied to, and are never complacent or lazy when it comes to expressing themselves. Water signs do have a propensity to drink or take drugs when they are faced by tragedy and dealing with difficult times, but Scorpios are strong and it takes a lot to get them to that state. If it comes to that, don’t be codependent. Communicate, be clear about what you expect from this relationship, and honor your word. If you can’t get the Scorpio person you love to stop self medicating, or from possible hurtful behaviors, don’t blame yourself.
Any self respecting Scorpio who feels too confined in an unsatisfactory relationship will face up to this. But be aware that when Scorpios walk away, it’s for good. They don’t look back, they move on. When you were getting to know this person, you already knew they were intelligent, exceptional, charming, puzzling, and difficult, with a huge zest and curiosity for life, all in one bundle. Never enter a relationship thinking you can change or remake a person into who you want them to be, especially this one.
A Scorpio person only knows how to be who they are, with no apologies. They will tell the unadulterated truth, so if you don’t want to know the answer to your question, don’t ask it. A Scorpio person who is in a relationship, love affair, or other situation of importance will give it all they have. Don’t try to play games with a Scorpio, if you play with fire, you can get burned. Scorpios never lead you to believe they are anything different than what they are. Take it or leave it.
“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.”

Questions & Answers
Do you think Scorpio men and women share the drive you talked about in your article?
Yes, I have been surrounded by Scorpios my whole life, have a Scorpio Ascendant, as my husband did, and have a double Scorpio Son. When they put their attention to what they want, they don't waver an inch! They are truly driven. Capricorns are driven to succeed too, but with Scorpios, it's a more personal goal or guideline and they may not even tell anyone what it is.Helpful 13
People say I am the nicest Scorpio ever. Why?
There are so many misconceptions about Scorpio Suns and Moons. I think it's because Scorpio rules the 8th house in astrology, which rules sex and death, among several other things, and they are just immature and dramatic. I am glad you enjoyed the article, it's for Scorpios like you that I wrote it!Helpful 9
